Television The Last Kingdom on BBC

Religion is ever present, but has more to do with politics than the religion. This show is different, and I’d argue much better than Vikings.

The downsides are you have to get through season 1 which is the weakest to get any payoff, and if you’re American you have to turn on subtitles to sort out the names because everyone is called some version of Alfred or something.
 I'm not American so that's alright

Cheers. I'll crack on with it. It is mad if they all talked about religion as much as they do in these shows. Literally all they ever think about. No wonder it's still going strong now.
I think @evil_geko probably nailed it. The highs of Vikings are better, but after that first few episodes of season 1 the consistency and quality of The Last Kingdom is better.

The bump to this thread made me think there was a new season. feck you guys.

Yeah, I would agree that this is probably better overall than Vikings, although the first 3 seasons of Vikings are great too.

Does anyone else think that Uhtred is better than any Vikings character with the exception of Ragnar?

Yeh almost certainly. Only other Vikings characters I like are Lagertha (obvious reasons) and Bjorn but Uhtred has more character than both.

As a whole, I like this better than Vikings tbh, best what Vikings has to offer is better, but this was much more consistent as a whole for me.
I agree with this.
I think part of this might be that Vikings has gone on longer so will see when last kingdom gets to the Vikings number of seasons

Nearly done s1 now. Enjoying this so far. Although finding them taking the posh boy English guy as an obvious Dane mildly jarring. Surely they could’ve found someone who sounds like one. He would’ve definitely grown up with their accent.

Same with this Scorpa - who is terrifying by the way  - sounds like he went to Eton but is a Viking lord of war.

Alfred’s mrs defines face like a slapped arse. Looking forward to her taking a dagger

I think shes sexy as feck Eliza Butterworth.

Production isnt suppose to start until later this year with a 2022 release date
I’ve just googled her. Never seen anyone look so different from photo to photo. She’s definitely fortunate to have been born now and not then, let’s just say that :wenger:

Eliza Butterface. (I kid, she looks perfectly normal in real life)

It's crazy how she is the same age in real life as her daughter in the show.

Liking the addition of subtle comedy in the 2nd season. Mostly on Beocca’s behalf. Him decking it up the hill was great.

It was more the jump in age of the daughter that was jarring to me.
Yeah that’s a hell of a long time. Like a 14-18 year gap (no idea how old she’s meant to be)?

Uhtred is a right twat though. Is he meant to be likeable? If you met him in real life you’d think he was the smarmiest most up himself bellend going. And that’s before you even get to him leaving his own son to die and bringing a different mrs home

Shades of grey? I mean he's more likeable than most but he can he a dick.

Beocca is great

The more you think about it while watching though, the more you realise he really is just a bit of a twat all the time.

Yeah Beocca is great though. I like the nun woman too. And whatshisface who called him arseling. He was cool.

Alfred is like an annoying as feck manager who you think you’ve won over but will treat you like shit again at the next opportunity.

Also, glad Uhtred slapped the shit out of that monk. cnut.

Alfred sparing shitfaceweld the death penalty seems a cop out because they don’t want to lose a good character. All that talk about Edward not having the stones to be king and he can’t even blind him in both eyes and at least make him actually unable take the crown. Pah

Uhtred’s face when Beocca headbutted that fella

They did a great job with the last convo between Uhtred and Alfred. Very emotional.

Still looking forward to his mrs catching a dagger.

(Just using this as my personal blog while I watch at the mo)

I only discovered this program last week, absolutely amazing TV!

I'm halfway through season 4 and I'll mourn when it's over and I'm made to wait for S5.

Highley recommended viewing!

Slappedarseface looks a fair bit better in season 4 than in 1. Now I understand a bit more why @Ramshock is hot under the collar.

Also, Uhtred is a grooming nonce. Change my mind

Uhtred is a brilliant, passive aggressive followed by overly aggressive, grumpy shagwell. It's great seeing a protagonist who isn't just a hero or antihero.

Aethefla Athae Aethelfeld fit woman, though. There's a horrible character. She should be locked in my jam and marmite dungeon.

If that is the scene I think it is, I loved it, David Dawson as Alfred was great in general, but that scene was brilliant.

Finished s4 last night

Thought the end was weird. Uhtred just basically adopts some little squirt despite having enough on his plate? Let’s his daughter get fully nonced up? Let’s Sqedward and Aethelflaed get away with negotiating her away to nonceville without speaking to him after everything he’s done for them?

Just been talking about this with a mate, and realised that one of the things I liked about it, was for the most part the characters are believable, at least on the Viking side - you believe that those fellas in charge are up to it.

In Vikings, Ragnor was great, but Bjorn seemed too dumb, Ivor was a completely unrealistic and unbelievable character, and that alcholic one I forget the name of didn’t look like he’d survive a night outdoors, nevermind a battle.

In this, young Ragnor, Cnut, Eric, Sigefride (especially), Kjarten, all seem like normal but scary bastards you’d expect to be leading an army of Danes.

just read that Netflix cancelled it and S05 will be the last

shame I quite liked this

Got to make room for more of those cookie cutter shows that you'll skip past when looking through Netflix and saying "there's feck all here to watch".

That sucks
Hopefully that allows them to wrap it up, it's been consistently strong and a good watch

That's shite. There must be a massive market for this kind of thing?

Isn’t that because they are doing the last 2 books in 1 series? Think I read that anyway

We can’t be too mad at Netflix - they saved this from when the BBC dropped it…
