Knew Moreno would never make it to me...

I'd imagine this story's been posted before but I can't resist sharing it! It's about Charro Moreno's last game, his spontaneous comeback game out of retirement, at the age of 44. It's covered briefly in his wiki but there's a couple of Spanish language bios that expanded upon it a bit more. What a way to go!

So brilliant and picturesque was the career of José Manuel Moreno, that there were great writers who could not resist immortalizing it. Like the very Eduardo Galeano, who in his indispensable "The football to sun and shadow" picked up the last great feat of the Argentine. "In 1961, already retired, was technical director of the Medellín of Colombia. Medellin was losing a game against Boca Juniors of Argentina, and the players could not find the way to the goal. Then Moreno, who was 45 years old, undressed, got on the court, made two goals and Medellín won. "

At his last game he played in 1961, at age 44, for Independiente de Medellín, the team he directed. It was a friendly, precisely, against Boca. The Colombians won 5-2. The story goes that Moreno, who was sitting on the bench in his technical outfit, could not see how badly his team was losing 2-1. Then he put on the shorts, entered the court and scored the two goals with which the story would turn. Then he would make two more goals and five minutes before the end, without anticipating or notifying anything, he raised his arms, greeted the crowd and left. It was the end of a great career of all time.
