I don't mind picking him at all, but would probably not play him in a uber attacking team as he simply hasn't played in one ever.

id say he would be fine in any setup apart from the peak Barca one and similar setups(possession heavy, high line etc.). Problem is, you use him in setup similar to United 08 and you see that crap in comments even though he would be immense, at least IMO he would.

Yeah in a standard normal team we have seen players exactly like him thrive so no need to think he wouldn't.

I wanted Matthews myself so we're almost even.

The 70s and 80s restriction is the hardest part for me at the moment. Deciding which one player you want from either of them is a nightmare.

I have found a simple solution to avoid this dilemma. I have decided to not pick anyone from the 70's.
Will vote against Enigma no matter who he comes up against and then pick Nedved in reinforcements if I survive myself after the first round.

Yeah I'm of a similar mind. It's very difficult to judge big, slow stoppers who excelled in teams built to defend deep and in numbers. It's not that I think Godin would fail, but it's hard to make an estimation of how he'd deal with problems I can hardly remember him coming up against. He's been an absolute colossus for Atletico no doubt, and I'd gladly have taken him, but there'd always have been that nagging doubt. He played in a very different setup at Villareal but I can't remember him being particularly impressive then.

I don't think there can be any doubt that teams that defend deep and in numbers vs. teams that press high and play on the front foot present very different problems for centre backs. There's a reason you see so few teams make the transition from those two systems with the same set of players, particularly defenders. But the nuances within that are hard to judge. As a result I think modern defenders suffer a bit more from that because we've seen them so many times playing in such a clearly defined defensive setup that it becomes harder to imagine them playing any other way. You still have the same initial doubts among older defenders but it's easier to explain them away.

I'm intrigued to see how @MJJ's team works out. As far as I can tell he's the only one who's avoided the WC and CL winners entirely at this stage...can't quite figure out if it's a masterstroke yet or not. It's definitely a tough balancing act!

To be fair, Uruguay in the last few years based on what I have watched have never been very attacking. Maybe its not the same level of organization of the team like Simeone has, but I certainly won't call it miles apart from Atletico.
