The Hurricane Thread | Hurricane Rafael

Yeah, Tampa dodged a huge bullet on that. The Mrs. has a friend that wouldn't leave Carrolwood... she got lucky.

I was born and have lived in Florida most of my 50 years, mostly in Lake County. This is the worst that's ever come all the way across the state in my lifetime. With the slightly more southern track, we avoided tornadoes, unlike the east coast. As for my immediate family, we evacuated yesterday morning to some friends close to Memphis, TN. Yes, about a 12 hour trip, but after most of Tampa had fled there was almost no traffic on US19. The only time I have EVER evacuated. My neighborhood, indeed the whole town, is now out of power. My sons stayed in the next town over, they still have power. Lots of downed trees, and I'm talking from the roots, not just sheared or broken off. I'm picking up a generator at Harbor Freight on my way back Saturday because we've heard we may not have power back until Monday.
Same here. First evacuation I’ve done. Picking up a generator along the way back won’t be the worst idea.

No doubt awful and really scary for everyone involved, but with that meteorologist crying on the news, people being told to write their name and DOB on their bodies so they can be ID'd, and that tampa official saying you will die if you don't evacuate it doesn't seem that bad

Yes it could have been worse, but still early days to assess the aftermath. The Tampa official you’re speaking of though is our mayor and was definitely over the top

Glad you're OK bud.

Drove to my daughters in Town and Country to get her spare gas for my generator since she didnt need hers. Most of traffic lights are out and people have no idea gow to treat then as 4 ways stops. Saw bunch of cars flooded out where they tried to drive through standing water. Never been so glad to have a 4Runner.
She made me coffee, tasted so good.

Hydro-locked most likely, so serious engine damage is probable.

While surveying flooding in several feet of water Friday morning, a full mile away from the Alafia River in Florida’s Hillsborough County, Sheriff Chad Chronister urged residents to leave, as flood levels in the area are expected to keep increasing as the day goes on.

“Please get out now,” Chronister said. “The water is not going down; the water is only going to increase. So, if you’re on the fence on whether you should leave or not leave — please, let’s keep everyone safe — let’s leave now!”

The sheriff told CNN’s Isabel Rosales he expects emergency calls to become more widespread as the peak crest for the Alafia River is expected to reach 25.5 feet on Friday night.

The fact that someone has to say this is quite honestly an indictment of how dumb some people really are, espeially the last bit

Kevin Guthrie, Florida Division of Emergency's management director

He says "post-disaster fatalities are preventable".

He reminds people they have organisations that can help people avoid putting themselves in danger.

Before people begin any clean-ups, he says they must take close-up and far-away pictures, both inside and outside the home.

"Please make sure you don't drive through flooded areas," he adds, as this can cause preventable accidents.

Guthrie issues further warnings - do not cut things out of trees with power lines or go in water as power lines can be hidden.

To help the various rescue teams, he says "we need you to stay out of our way".

"We don't need you out there sightseeing," Guthrie adds. "We really, really need your cooperation on this."

I can't wait until the sinkholes start. Already had one in the Mount Dora area taking out a whole section of road. But with that much water, it's inevitable.

Been reported that FEMA only offers $700 to any residents affected by the hurricanes, which is ridiculous considering how much money is given to certain countries.
The $750 is an immediate payment to those affected by the storm for essentials.

It's not the only amount the victims will receive.

That's an intial amount to cover immediate basic needs, it's not a final amount

What is you main source for news? Based on multiple outlets that is just the amount available for immediate needs, not what will ultimately be available for the affected. This had has been reported on every national and local new source I have seen here in NC.

Pissed off, the roof I put on my daughter house brand new about 5 years ago needs replaced. I have a $5k deductible. I knew there would be issues with that roof after we caught the installer illegally using someone else contractor license. Florida is the Wild West when it comes to everyone being out to rip you off.

For Hurricane Ida that directly hit me in 2021, I received a total of $1400 cash / a trip paid for (reimbursed) for hiding out in Destin, Florida and pretty much it, no power for a solid week but hey, companies did allow us to defer bills for abit.
