The Guardian - Manchester United to sack Erik ten Hag after the FA Cup Final

Let's be real. People are just upset that he's getting sacked. That's where the whole "classless" outrage comes from. Even the majority of this forum was expecting it to happen and now people are acting like it's shocking news that came out of the blue. Ineos refused to publicly back him for months, wtf did everyone think was going to happen, especially after the atrocious season we've had?

If there is any truth to this report it’s an absolute disgrace and the club has learned nothing from the way Woodward treated LVG and the way we treated DDG last summer. Ashamed. :annoyed:
That’s the feeling I have. Very poor show again from the club.

I honestly don't get this outrage about his sacking. And mostly the outrage is not even about a leak before the final. And people already starting to call ineos disgraceful for sacking him? If I had no context, I'd think he was being sacked for shits-and-giggles after he's finished 2-3rd in the league and QF-SF in the CL. I don't get it. Do people still have this much hope for ETH? I don't and tbf neither with the next hopefuls for the manager position.

Yet more fecking ineptitude by Tory Boy.

A whole squad of players that’s thrown manager after manager under the bus, being given an excuse to not win a cup final.

Radcliffe will be more damaging to this football club than the Glazers if he keeps his hand on the tiller.

Man alive. Even LvG’s horrendous sacking was handled more professionally.

It’s not JUST a results business. Liverpool may shout ‘This means more’ and Barca may scream ‘More than a club’, and Catalans/Scousers are a wonderful breed apart in their respective countries.

But there were three clubs in Europe that didn’t need to say shit. United. Bayern. Real. They just had their shit together, through good times and bad.

Post Fergie/Gill, United have dropped out of that triptych. The LvG sacking was awful. Correct, but awfully handled. He was a modern day great of the game, loved the club and didn’t deserve the exit he got.

But this shit with ten Hag? Banter club stuff. Really shoddy management. He’s not on Louis’ level. He hasn’t hit the standards needed. If they want to replace him, all good. It’s their money.

But having this story drop BEFORE a match against our city rivals, on this half injured squad, while we try to stop them winning back to back doubles, and creep closer to our FA Cup haul?… garbage behaviour.

I hope we win for him, and I hope he gives the new ownership team both barrels as he leaves with a winners medal around his neck.

I do expect better from a manager, and the manager carries the can, it’s fine to fire him… but after all the glad handing from Tory Jim, professing to be a fan… nope. He’s a rich twat that doesn’t understand the essence of the club at all. With the staff cuts, cancellation of the end of season party after the women’s teams success, the discontinuation of staff/family FA Cup perks introduced by Sir Matt… Nah mate.

Well you clearly haven't followed Bayern this year or recently  Real are an even worse example

The ultimate manager fan boy over club support post.
Name calling new owners that have been here 5 minutes.
Have you seriously watched United since we won the league cup last year? It has been a nadir of epic proportions

I still hope he stays. Thinking he’s the problem and that it’ll change with Pochettino or whoever is naive. Look at the past 10 years.

The sacking culture of managers in the PL is horrible. The common denominator with successfull teams tend to be consistency. The amount of injures we’ve had this season, I doubt say Pochettino or Tuchel would’ve done much better. Looking at the last season that we didn’t have record breaking amounts of injuries, there actually was a lot of progress. He deserves another half a season, at least.

I don't think so much much related to wanting ETH to stay, but rather people are conflating this story with what's happened in the past

In the past under Woody we fecked up the communications a few times in a disrespectful way to staff, notably LVG, De Gea and Herrera

That may or may not have happened here, but we don't know what's happened. All we know is a journalist has got hold of the story and published it.

People are a bit thick if they don't think Ten Hag is looking out for himself. All this shite about him having no idea, thinking he's safe blah blah blah it's all self preservation so he can look better. Just like how all his press conferences have been defensive of himself.

Usual suspects falling for it and wanting to whinge at the way the club is handling it.

I don't believe this, if you compare his win percentage with managers who have been here a similar amount of time, then he is behind Jose on 57.5%, Ferguson in 26 years was 59.7%.
So is he really that bad?

He had a good season last year and the signs were good.

this season has been laughably bad, injuries or no injuries. i've never in my 26 years supporting united seen us this bad. he's got some transfers horribly wrong and his over reliance on players he's previously worked with has been ilhis undoing.

i don't think Sacking him is harsh, the timing is horrific but i think he probably warrants the sack.

I tend to agree. We don't know that it wasn't his team that leaked the news. Build in another excuse should be get thumped v City.

He has been in self preservation mode for some time.

Constantly bleating on about the injuries. Well, how about you give some confidence to those players who are covering for the injured players, and back them to do a job.

They can absolutely prevent leaks that dictate those articles. Liverpool were able to break the news of Klopp's retirement themselves, through an official announcement, whereas we've had it leaked that Ten Hag was going without any idea as to who is taking over. If the Scousers can be professional we should be able to too.
how? Bind and Gag all members of staff and put them in the basement at Carrington? you can't stop people from talking for feck sake

Errrrrm… no mate. I think ten Hag needs to be replaced and we definitely need a full reset.

But the owners?… Radcliffe is awful mate. Bad politics. Outdated business principles. Doesn’t know football any more than you or I.

As with Nice, the sooner he appoints people that know what they’re doing, the better.

Tubthumping for a vampiric anti-union, anti regulation, free market capitalist as the country evacuates that wrong headed shite from our politics is insane.

I support my club and the team that takes the field. That’s it. I’ll never go the Chelsea/City route and cheer a fecking owner. Nor should you.

Good post but don't be expecting miracles from Starmer

It is quite incredible that fans love to use the Roy Keane line - "these players will throw any manager under the bus".

Yet, it's the players signed by previous manager, or that are academy products, that have been his better performers. How many times has McT rescued us this season? How necessary was Mainoo to come in and play a key role in midfield? The emergence of Garnacho.

Players player of the year the last two seasons - Rashford and Dallot. Sir Matt award - Rashford and Bruno.

I’m club above all else. We are stuck with current owners for the foreseeable, so I don’t see the point in knocking before at least a season or so with them in place.
Or do we all get pitchforks out now and start the Luddite revolution?

So The Guardian is the new hotbed for Manchester united news???

how would you go about preventing Poch or another managers agent from leaking the story?

We've had an atrocious last 10 years. It's never been the manager. Until the delusional, gaslighting owners and board and the entitled, prima donna players are vomited out, and there's a complete overhaul of the culture, we ain't winning ANYTHING.

Yes but success comes before longevity. If a manager is successful they will stay in a job a long time. If a manager is failing they will in 99% of cases get sacked. And this isn't a new phenomena, clubs have been sacking managers since the game was invented. The club sacked 5 managers between Busby retiring and hiring Ferguson in the 70's and 80's. We've been on a downward trajectory from the last 3rd of last season that continued on into this season. Injuries alone can't account for that.

If sacking him won't change anything, what would change if he stayed?

Anyone could write a story like this.
I like how we have decided to sack him but the article still says we are still considering about 5 possible candidates.....absolute shite!

The Guardian tend to follow good press practice and the three source rule. It would be surprising if a journalist at the Guardian wrote something that definitive without having verified it with three independent sources first.

Im not knocking the decision mate. Put anyone in charge of a multi billion pound business and they’ll want to choose the staff. I would, you would. Unless the management team is shining, your back yourself to find better.

My problem is the fact he’s opened his mouth prior to a cup final. It’s moronic.

Had this been an isolated incident I’d chalk it up to inexperience. But he’s yet to get anything right, aside from (maybe) Berrada. The Ashworth situation is laughable. The Wilcox appointment way too noisy. His media presence talking politics. The WFH nonsense. The end of season Party for the women’s team. The removal of an FA Cup club/family tradition going back 60+ years - instilled by our first great manager and leading light of the club. It’s just utterly shit.

So yeah, I’ll criticise every single thing he does that dilutes the football club. I don’t care how new he is. Everything above is worse than Woodwards ‘adult Disneyland’ nonsense.

He’s being given a pass as he’s not a Glazer. But he didn’t get rid of them. They’re still there. Taking cash. He’s the lipstick on their pig and I don’t think he’s a good thing for our club.

The hope was that INEOS would be better operators. They have come into a shit show, but the signs aren't good at the start.

The manager should go, but there is a cup final to try and win first.

For that story to have any credence we would have our next manager in mind and given assurances the individual would be on board.
This article is still talking about Southgate FFS!
The Guardian have rolled the dice to get in first to grab the headlines and while I think it will happen this rag knows no more than any other out there.

On the contrary, they've handled every decision almost perfectly and have reached the right conclusion 9/10 times.

Ah, remember the days of ETH's appointment and the giddy promises made by many here that a couple of dodgy seasons would be fine as he implemented changes to make us a 'modern' team. Heaven help the new coach.

Let’s face it we all watched Ajax’s run to the semis in 2019 and saw stars in our eyes.

We didn’t expect stubborn, naive, annoying and plain stupid from the guy that got that Ajax team so right.

Does any United fan honestly think we’ll win tomorrow?

Pretty sure they can see the writing on the wall and the cup final is an irrelevancy.

Watch him start Casemiro at CB, Onana upfront and Tom Huddlestone in midfield now.

Would actually be a nice change from the shite he’s served up constantly.

Well he has had 2 full seasons and played the worst football I've ever seen from us for the majority of it despite being backed with half a billion.

I think the cries for patience would have the unspoken caveat that there needs to be at least mild signs of progress.

Whether we do win or not, for all this stuff to be coming out on the eve of a final is just ridiculous.

By all means sack him after it, win or lose, but the media management is atrocious.

I think Chelsea ruined it to be honest by being so aggressive in going after the same managerial targets

Going by how Chelsea's ownership operates we shouldn't be worried by who they target anyway.

It is a Cup final and there have been a few upsets over the years.
It's a funny old game.

Who knows? It's football and anything can happen over 90 minutes. We're not favourites but it's still entirely possible that we win, stranger things happen every day.

I go into the game, with maybe more hope than expectation but I don't get the mindset of doom and the expectation of certain defeat.
