The greatest Manchester United player

Ronaldo. Won everything here and is arguably the greatest of all time.

George Best would be a very close second.

However Charlton is the biggest "legend" for the club.

Greatest player of any club?

Oh....my.

Hard to argue with that. I think Giggs needs to be in there even if it's on the bench
Yep. Giggs and Ronaldo in the bench for both categories.

For what is worth, I think that Ronaldo has been a better and greater player than Best and SBC, but not for United.

Considering his whole tenure inc madrid and portugal ronaldo is ahead of best by miles.

Multiple cl, euro, several balon dor, records etc.

Ronaldo rival is only messi/pele/maradona in term of goats.

Not gonna get into the GOAT debate, but im truly shocked anyone would have Ronaldo as their choice for best player of all time.

Greatest goalscorer - maybe - although Gerd Muller would be my pick, or even Messi's almost 100 goal calendar year.

But best player ,wow.

In my lifetime is cantona

Although Ronaldo had a lot more goals, cantona had an incredible influence and leadership qualities to go along with his talent

Cantona. Honestly when I think legend, I automatically think of him. When I think United, I think of him.

He finished 3rd in Ballon D'Or vote aged 21 (and was 13th a year before). Pretty much everyone who've seen him play name him as the best talent they've seen, and Charlton himself said multiple times that Edwards was better than him (and we all know how good Sir Bobby was). Wasn't a silky Maradona-esque dribbler but rather an amazing all-rounder who played all over the pitch. Don't think that we have anyone like him today

Here's more of a defensive performance from him

Thanks for this, never seen that video before.

As harms said, if Sir Bobby says he was better, that's good enough for me.
The videos I've seen of Duncan suggest he was a beast. A skillful beast.

Since I've been watching United (77), I would say Ronaldo. In his last couple of seasons for us he was virtually unplayable.

Cristiano Ronaldo one of Manchester United's greatest, says Sir Bobby Charlton

While many United fans will always claim that Best was the greatest player to grace the Old Trafford turf, Charlton feels Ronaldo is closing in fast.

He said: "It was paradise watching George play, just as it is now with Ronaldo. The difference is that Ronaldo is stronger and faster.

"Yes, George could also be frustrating, he held on to the ball for too long. You would get into a good position and hope he would pass the ball, but most of the time he didn't. But George usually scored or made the keeper make a save."

Not beter than sir Bobby. Probably less mercurial than Best
Sir Bobby nullified and ruled the Kaiser. Imo that makes you the best player in the world.

Ronaldo won 4 Ballon D'Ors and finished second another 4 or 5 times. He has been the best or second best player in the world for a decade.

Bobby was the best player in a match against the best team in the world and a world cup winner.

I'm not saying Ronaldo isn't great. I just don't think he's as great as Charlton. Or Best. That's debatable on both accounts.

Was with @harms but @Moby post was pretty beautiful.

I pick Bobby Best.

FWIW I don't think it is as cut and dry to say Best is superior player to Charlton. Sir Bobby was a magnificent talent and I think people overlook that and think he's just an excellent player who was a tip top professional.. no he's one of the most gifted footballers of all time from any nation.

Two footed, amazing dribbler, can shoot from anywhere, can dictate a game.. left guys like Beckenbauer on his ass. A genius footballer who has the trophies/consistency and longevity to match.
This

I do wonder how some of these players from the past would have been judged if they were scrutinised for everything like the players today are. I could just imagine "ffs Charlton" "Best showing hes a fraud" and other nonsensical posts during that time (which thankfully didnt happen).

FWIW its hard to do this without having seen every single player. If were doing it based on second hand experience / stats / trophies than it makes it easier (but again, we have to eliminate those who are still playing).

In my time, the greatest player for everything becomes Cantona just because of the catalyst he was (even though I should be putting Giggs for longevity, trophies, ability all rolled into one).

Obviously he was.
Depends on what someone considers to be world class.

If Best and Ronaldo are considered world class, then is Giggs still world class despite being a clear tier below them?

It's all subjective.

There's some sentimental answers here, your best ever player is obviously CR7, while Best is in with the argument skill wise but overall game probably goes to CR7.

Pure talent would be George Best

Most impactful and important would be Eric Cantona

For a club that's had as many truly world class players as ourselves it's completely subjective and impossible to nail it down to just one so it's a much better idea to put them into tiers so the first would be something like,

Tier 1

George Best, Eric Cantona, Bobby Charlton, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Denis Law, Peter Schmeichel, Roy Keane, Bryan Robson and Paul Scholes

Why?
For United he won 1 Ballon D'or and CL with a few leagues.

Charlton did the same (Ballon D'or, CL and Leagues) , and was here for much, much longer.

It's all subjective.

It mainly has to do with the term 'world class' not being properly defined and completely meaningless.

Wish I had seen Best and Sir Charlton play for us live... But from the videos I've seen I have to say Best even though Sir Bobby is Mr United.

The most gifted was George Best.
The greatest ambassador, the embodiment of all the noble attributes Bobby Charlton.
The most influential ( in my opinion) Roy Keane .

In my 52 years of watching United, George had the most talent, greatest or most legendary has to be Bobby and Ronaldo is the best player.
