The greatest Manchester United player

Going against my grain here. Best was the greatest. If your a United fan he got you of your seat.
Yea, and it isn't just United fans that seen him live that say that, even supporters of other clubs will say he was the best player we ever had.

I've said it before but I'll say it again my grandad said he was the best player he's ever seen. my grandmother good rest her soul said she'd watch United games just to watch him.

Platini is the best french player ever and a Juventus legend. Zidane is neither.

I was to young to see Platini play but Zidane was an incredible player that held a important role and often deciding role for both club and national team. winning and deciding a WC, EC for his national team and CL, leagues for his club / clubs. I rate him among the best footballers I've seen play.

Harry Gregg...for what he did during and after Munich...

The man is a complete fecking hero in every sense of the word...

For those putting Giggs above Best, I remember Dennis Law being interviewed when Giggs burst onto the scene and everybody was going wild over him (rightly so I might add). Law looked at the presenter and said 'Oh he's good, but he's no George Best'.

Best was the best player ever to come from the British Isles never mind the best to ever play for Utd.

Talking about interviews, this is what George himself had to say about Ronaldo. "There have been a few players described as ‘the new George Best’ over the years, but this is the first time it’s been a compliment to me."

....and Denis was spot on, Giggs was nowhere near the player that George was.

Denis Law was the most exciting player I ever saw; Bestie was very, very special, Charlton a legend of immense stature and quality, but in his pomp it was impossible to take your eyes off The Law Man; Bill Shankly regarded Law as one of the best players he had ever seen when he was Laws manager at Huddersfield, and Matt Busby always said Law was his greatest signing. Law was European Footballer of the year in 1964 and the great Alfredo Di Stefano said if Law had gone to Real Madrid instead of Torino in 1961 they would have dominated European football for even longer.

Best was my first hero. I am not even sure if the things I remember him doing even happened. Growing up in Scotland between '66 and '73 he was all my school friends' hero. All of us supported our local team, which was Hearts and Manchester Utd because of Best.
I had his bedroom slippers his school shoes, made of pvc with red soles, his training shoes and football boots.
In other words I am completely biased.
Best is the greatest.

One name

LEE MARTIN as that winning goal in 1990 started a great winning legacy, if it weren't for that goal god knows where we would be.

George used to do a column for the Daily Express back in the late 60s and would sign it. I was only young and I tried to model my own signature after his. My handwriting normally was nothing like George's but almost 50 years on my signature is still in the same style it was all those years ago after I'd tried to copy him.

He was a great hero of mine also growing up - I was lucky enough to meet him once and also to see him play in Belfast (albeit in a testimonial). One thing about Best is that he is loved and appreciated by fans of all clubs in England. I remember about 12 years ago I was lucky enough to be in Australia and I met a great guy who was a massive Newcastle fan - top bloke who had good links to the club (Newcastle) and adored them. One of the first things that made us bond was our mutual love of George Best, he and I drank into the early hours talking with complete admiration about what a player he was and how much we both adored the guy. I'm not a Utd fan by any means but to me, when I think of Utd I think of George Best and because of that (and of course many of the other great links with Northern Irish players over the years) I have a soft spot for the club.

I'd say Charlton... it's always a joy to see him and his wife at most of our games

In terms of all the exciting memories they've given us, and all the trophies contributed to, and personal records as well...

Wayne Rooney.

And I'm in my mid/late 30s, so yes I remember Cantona, Robbo, Giggs, Scholes.

I think in 20 years time, my answer will be a lot less controversial.

I was born in 85 - going off players strictly in my lifetime

1. Cantona - pound for pound, game for game he was probably the most vital and influential player. He was the game changer.
2. Scholes - Had it all, really and as time went on changed as a player and arguably became more effective. One of the most intelligent players of his time and for me greatest English player of my lifetime.
3. Robson - Like our Stevie Me, but better and actually ended up winning the league. Carried us before the good times. A gifted player, but also a tough bastard who knew no limits.
4. Giggs - You can't leave a player with his trophy haul off. On top of that; what a player. Underrated it seems by the newer generation, but had it all and stood the test of time and adapted his game.
5. Ronaldo - The best player to play at the club surely. I'd say similar to Cantona (not in style but impact), just over a smaller timeframe (I know technically was at us longer but half of that was his development phase)

Keane could also place anywhere on this list. Maybe I don't view him in the same light as he's become something of a bastard over the years, but every bit as influential and important a player as the other ones.

This has been asked many times..at the end of the day ranking will be a collection of opininions or votes..put a list first objectively and vote subjectively
There are and were so many great players and there is so little difference among them

Maybe an expert in web will put a list where we can rank each player and see the results.

Possible list

Charlton
Best
Law
Robson
Schmeichel
Cantona
Keane
Scholes
Giggs
Beckam
Ronaldo
Rooney
Others (not in the list )

Big three is a given, i dont think anybody can object to giggs best charlton, but chosing only one is tricky

may i ask how old you are? if you are born in 81 i find it strange to call players "best" when you have never seen them actually play over a few years.

Very difficult for people my age to say whether it was Best, Sir Bob, The Lawman or even King Eric to some extent (I was 9 when he retired). Therefore, I'd have to say the best player I've ever seen play for United has to be Ronny. His record speaks for itself and the trophies we amassed while he was there was amazing. Greatest ever!!!

As I've said previously, Ronaldo is the best player I've seen at OT as well. Sir Bobby is still the greatest. Too much history/longevity to be anyone else.

In my lifetime (born 85) I would probably say Schmeichel. He was among, if not the, best in his position in the world throughout his term with us. In my view probably also the best in his postion ever.

All time for United I'd guess Sir Bobby based on talent, achievments, character and overall contribution.

I agree. Best goalkeeper I've ever seen.

Cant see how I can comment on players I never saw play live (at least on TV): Whenever I see Edwards, Charlton or Best on youtube and TV, they look slow and unsophisticated. But of course, I have no appreciation of relativity from that era.

The 2 best players I've seen play for Manchester United are Cantona and Ronaldo.

Cantona edges it for me because his contribution was for longer (including a legacy effect still here today).

Even though my pick is Best, I would not argue if someone picked, Charlton, Law or Ronaldo, because they are all Ballon d'Or winners. I think our greatest ever player should at least be considered, at one time, the best in the world or at least Europe.
I guess its hard to separate your favourite player from whom you think is our greatest player. Of course its easy for me because my favourite player is also the greatest ever, Best.:):):)

I didn't have the privilege to watch him play but I've seen enough from YouTube videos to go with George Best.

Message to admins...

Can we get a count or a poll?

Just to see what is the over all picture of opinion on here.

I never seen them play, but try arguing best isn't one of the contender in a Manchester United forum

If i take 81 onwards then begrudgingly it must fall to giggs. Although I'd say if beck wasn't here longer he could have nick it for the swagger he brought to this club.

A very difficult question to answer. For me it was Duncan a player ahead of his time, had all the skills and then there was "The Belfast Boy", who could have played on an ice rink such was his balance and dribbling skills.

However, there is a former player that rarely gets a mention on any Utd Forums who really as one of the posters said on this forum was a "True Hero", in every sense, a great servant for the club at it's time of greatest need and helped to build and project the ideals that the club has today both on and off the field of play. A very modest man who has never sought nor received official recognition for his actions that day at Munich. That man is Harry Gregg.
