Gaming The Golden Age of Video Games is Over

I’m playing more emulators recently and have enjoyed playing the likes of IK+, Ikari warriors, R-type, Double Dragon (used to be able to finish this on 10p), Bubble Bobble, New Zealand story, amongst others.

For me they encapsulate an era where I really couldn’t get enough. Games are better looking nowadays, but are they as fun?

I’ve also spent most of the week playing the new COD
Ikari Warriors. What an absolute classic.

Edit: and New Zealand Story. Absolute class.

My biggest issue is why are we just churning out sequels all the time rather than going with new, creative content?

All these mythical role play games where you use magical powers to defeat XY and Z.. boring. Do something different.

Been crying out for a decent football game to rival the EA stuff for years but no one can be arsed. Years ago we had all sorts on the market but just feels a bit samey.

Pogue making this thread and not bothering to post in it then shows how much he cares for the actual debate as opposed to just wanting to rile people up

Sequels make sense. People get invested in the narrative and characters. It would be a shame if they didn’t make sequels after going to lengths to world build.

“Mythical games” are not the only games being released, not even close. They’re very popular though.

Agreed on football games though.

It gets boring though plus from my perspective puts people off jumping in. For instance game 5 is the ‘game of the year’ so you think FFS I’ve got to play the other 4 and I really Cba with that..

Seems like zero innovation these days to think outside the box.

There’s only so many stories to tell and game mechanics to work with. It would be weird if they came up with new characters and a new narrative for every game.

Just feels lazy and definitely puts off new players. Much easier to just build on something else than try something new. Having each game following the last makes it off putting for others to jump in.

There’s literally no excuse for not looking at sports games either. Plenty of scope to do something fun and arcade like with football with a focus on gameplay rather than ensuring you have every license under the sun. Same with management sims.

Developers are boring!

Yeah, pretty much. Although I also can’t really contribute since I haven’t played a game through in well over a decade!

Although it is interesting watching my 15 y.o. young fella play games. He only ever plays sports sims or Fortnite. And it’s the same with all his pals. All the other big new games have zero interest to him.

Very different to when I was his age and obsessively tracked every big new release, knowing it was going to be a huge leap forward in gaming. I get the impression that all the single game player games are perceived as samey and uninteresting to him after he first played a few of them.

Imagine if there was this game about a guy who chokes horses and has really great opinions on football.

I feel like there aren't as many new franchises as there used to be. Probably cause big games cost tens of millions to make now so they won't take that level of risk

So far this thread is just old men complaining about why games aren't while they used to be while the people who still play games say they still enjoy it as much as ever. Go figure.

I don't really game these days, but from friends who I don't get the impression of this article at all. And considering gaming is bigger than ever before, and being by far the biggest entertainment industry, I think it's quite off base. It's just another one of those "it was better before".

I've recently upgraded my pc from my 7 year old 1080ti pc.

I've now put my 7 year old pc into a matx case (had to buy a new mb for it) and installed batocera and now run it as a retro machine. From C64 to PS3/xbox360

I've literally 3.5tbs of games on it. It's by far the best system I've ever had. I prefer older games and there's so many of them.

Now I still enjoy modern games hence building a new computer that's high end (although refused to buy the 4090 gpu) but I've now the best of all worlds.

I don’t see it. There’s only far they can push graphics and to be honest we are reaching a saturation point on that, however there are still huge huge leaps that can be made on AI. Red dead 2 has come to the closest to creating a realistic open world, but I suspect others will get close as we move forwards.

You were not the norm. I guarantee you most people were like him back then. Lots of people wouldn't touch any other game, but played FIFA, CoD or maybe Football Manager.

It's a pretty typical redcafe thread tbf. Thing is, creativity and new ideas are there, y'all just don't know about them.... and then you have VR (not the gimmick shit)!

There's plenty going on in gaming now. I've got more games than I can ever complete in my backlog and new stuff just keeps coming

That’s an unusually stupid contribution from you. Those words are the title of an article, linked in the OP. Written by someone who who has clearly played games more recently than I have.

Yeah but then you said "I kind of think I agree.", so you're fair game.

Edit: also I resent the implication that my contributions usually aren't stupid.

“Kind of think” is hardly a ringing endorsement!

Anyway, I’m so old that my peak gaming years were before this so called golden age. So I’m definitely in no position to go into bat for it. Unlike yer man I quoted in the OP.

I think there’s certainly less creativity and risk these days.
Have you played games like Outer Wilds though? Because most people bemoaning a supposed drop off focus purely on the bigger name titles.

He’s right
This thread is funny. We’ve gotten the below single player titles over the past 11 years:
- Witcher 3
- Outer Wilds
- Nier Automata
- GoW and GoWR
- The modern Zelda games
- RDR2
- TLOU P1 and 2
- Subnautica
- Hades
- Disco Elysium
- Spidey / Ghost / Rachet
- Returnal
- Elden Ring (not played but supposed to be great)
- BG3 (same as above)
- Mario Galaxy and Astro Bot (same as above)
- Hollow Knight
- MGS5

I’m sure I’ve missed boat loads but basically some AAA studios have fallen prey to anti consumer and repetitive / risk averse practices but the sheer amount of the games being and the talent and money being put in, means that this is a terrific time for a gamer whether it’s through big developers or small.

How many of those are follow ups though rather than new, stand alone, games?

I was going to add an age after the quote, newspaper style, but I realised I don't actually know how old you are.

It takes two
Disco Elysium
Celeste
Ori games
Inscryption
The Witness
Horizon

I could just keep throwing names out. We've got so much brilliant stuff this past decade. You've probably just focused on the "big studios" like many.

I don't get the arguement on sequels.... If a game is great I'm not gonna be against a sequel am I? More of the same can be good, sometimes amazing, sometimes really innovative. So many sequels end up being incredible games....

He's 70 mate...

I agree but at the same time, we're talking 11 years. Make a list 11 years prior to where this list started and it would be four times as long, for me at least. GBA, DS, Gamecube and PS2 era was such a great time. Still, there is plenty of fun games to play nowadays of course and like you said it's definitely a good time for gamers. Especially within the indie space.

Personally I think we're in a golden age. PC gaming has never been better.

For anyone with kids the golden age of gaming was before the kids were born. For most people it's before school becomes too important and all your friends also plays games.

Those kind of variables affect how people think of games but objectively the quality of games is great.

This is the truth. FIFA was the only acceptable game. And if you played that game on single player for more than a couple of hours a week, then you were also a nerd.

My classmates damn near crucified me when they heard that I had attended a LAN party

It wasn't quite that bad for me, because we had quite a few self-proclaimed nerds at my school and in my general social circle. We actually had some pretty big LANs in my town. In one of them the total prize pool was 100k NOK, which was an absurd amount for the time and place. This was when Counter Strike was getting big.
