The First Redcafe Sheep Draft

Just a quick message to say I'm really enjoying watching this draft develop. Some fantastic teams being put together.

Going to be a tough decision when some of these potential teams go head to head. Aldo is doing a great job so far, liking the new criteria. Surprised there were a couple blocks, thought most would go through ok.

Keep it up all. Good luck.

interesting so far. the criteria has been good in terms of allowing for a big pool for selection

fecking hell, You twats stop banning all the keepers. At this rate, bunch of us would have to pick keepers in the banned players round

@AldoPaine18 @kps88

Can we have a fun 13th pick for the manager? Only 2 picks and losers get a sheep manager!
No timeline restrictions for this please.

The way this round is going it looks like we could use a 13th pick for players. Really wouldn't like to see teams ruined by sheep. One could be fun, two makes for a pointless game.

All up to Aldo of course, but I feel it would be pointless if everyone's sheep just remained on the bench. Managers who have avoided sheep need to be rewarded and vice versa. Otherwise the risk-reward element is taken out of the game.

yep.. that's the whole point of this kind of draft

I really like @sullydnl team so far. One sheep, but he makes up for it with genuine top quality in every pick. I think he has an absolutely astonishing balance too with that midfield of Kaka in front of Essien and Makelele. Great pace on the counter with RVN and Kaka and they are both great goalscorers.

If he finishes the draft as strong as he has started it he would be my favorite by now. Probably not the best individual quality pick for pick, but the team cohesion looks stunning. Makelele, Essien and Kaka really make a dream midfield with crystal clear roles and it is given that they would absolutely love playing with each other.

I agree with the principle and it's OK at this point in time, just something you may want to keep an eye on.

Up for the manager thing, why not?

I think it's lacking a playmaker in there myself. Kaká is obviously a playmaker of sorts but he's also very direct, and when at his best he had someone dictating the play from a deeper position. I don't see Essien or Makelele being the right player to launch those counter attacks.

Yup, he has picked the two less creative midfielders of that midfield trio in Milan if he goes for the christmas tree formation. If he decides to go for a counterattacking style then I think Essien and Makelele will be good enough to win the ball and provide simpler passes forward. With so many picks left he can end up going for plenty of formations and tactics but so far I think it looks great.

Except that simple passes don't cut it for a counter-attacking style. I agree with Brwned, once you have those two you need a third playmaking from deep.

Dont necessarily agree that you cant play counterattacking football because you only have the quality of Essien and Makelele available. If he intends to play a high pressure defense and regain the ball far up the pitch then I personally rate work rate and tactical awareness very high in comparison to range of passing.

If he intends to defend with a regular or deep defensive line then I agree that you need at least one CM with a brilliant range of passing.

Personally id really rate his side if he added two wingers who are great in a high pressure defense. In that style you scramble your way to chances much more than you use sublime cross field passing from deep to unlock the opponents defense. Even if Id also really rate it if he goes for that third playmaking midfielder instead.

If you are playing a 4-4-2 variation, that would be nice, but then it is a waste of Kaka. For a 4-2-3-1 or even a diamond, having a deep lying playmaker in the back 2 would be perfect. Not saying it can't be done otherwise but just lacks the final gloss his other 3 picks deserve.....
....and I know the perfect 4th player who can complete the midfield. Just perfect. Was considering him for long...and finally had to drop him off after Baggio.

I'd say Essien, Makelele and Kaka peaked at a time when football was all about specialists. For every playmaker there was a workhorse to give him the freedom to be creative. That's the exact opposite of pressing football, where you need allrounders with great workrate, everyone needs to be able to do everything at a certain level and the quick transition replaces the creativity. In theory, you maybe could say that those 3 would become different players if their career started today. But if we look at how they played during the peak of their careers, playing them in a high pressure defense system seems wrong to me.

Taking them individually, I had Essien in the CL draft and he was very under-rated imo. Beast in his prime.

I think I know who you're talking about . It's a shame that he's still unpicked, maybe not the biggest name, but what a brilliant player he was. Would be perfect. If he's still unpicked in the last round and eligible, I might throw my theme away for him .

Could of been because in the CL draft you've basically got the best of the best. Essien was a beast, but potentially dwarfed by the other bigger names.

He'll do well in this draft due to the teams not being as good as the likes of the CL and World Cup drafts.

More than one, I should say. I thought of 3, finalized on one and any of the 3 would fit in to a T. Infact you don't have to break your theme for one!

Yeah possibly. But he was one of the best in recent years. Just had a short peak.

Now I'm confused, there are two fitting in my theme that I would consider for that role, neither is perfect though and the better one is most likely gone in this round.

2nd pick sent.

Damn you, Edgar! But truth be told I was prepared to have Bergomi blocked. Strange he wasn't blocked before this round, really. My initial pick has obviously been taken here too, so in that sense I certainly don't regret going for Bergomi.

BTW, I'm off now to get some business out of the way - won't be online for some hours. Will be back around four/five-ish, though. I reckon this round will last a while anyway, though. See ya.

God sully really screwed me up properly with Cech here, had to go for a second option far worst than he was.. I definitely won't get a sheep but I'm starting to build a really average side

Just wondering but is it possible for people to do this @AldoPaine18 :

Say someone had Henry.
Someone picks Makelele to pass the B criteria as both played together for France (I think).

Manager tactically fail at giving a player to match criteria A for the first pick.

So round result for this guy is
PASS (Makelele) and FAIL (tactical pick to lose guy).

In second round of picking can the manager pass criteria A now by picking a player that could pass criteria A with Makelele? Now he's in the team and all.

So 2nd pick here can be Cech.

Do you get me?

After going for such a safe pick, I have zero belief he will get blocked. Makes this round boring, I'm not scared yet I'm waiting for the laughs when you guys see my pick

Ha, sorry buddy. If it's any consolation we really didn't do ourselves any favours with that pick either. :(
