Played a couple of hours so far, taking my time and exploring everywhere trying for as close to 100% as possible; just arrived at the market after leaving Aeris' house. Good fun so far, but can't wait to start acquiring summons and a better selection of materia

Woodsy.....go do the Chocaboo breeding, Knights of the Round absolutely rocks :)

Just ended my session on the end of disc 2. I'll hopefully finish it tomorrow. So much for not playing much this week.

I was always wondered if this game was just overrated or but there aren't many games I've enjoyed as much as this. Some of the cutscenes could look amazing if they did ever decide to remake it.

Do the Chocobo quest (make a gold Chocobo). It is a rewarding but also very fun quest, possibly the best in any FF game. Also, go and get Omnislash in the battle arena.

And try your luck with the two optional weapons. If you defeat them (or at-least resist them for 5 minutes), you'll find the final boss easy.

Every damn time, something new.

Did you know the Quadra Magic Materia island and cave, you can get there with the Highwind early, if you land it *just* right you'll pop out at the bottom of the cliff, go to the cave, and will still be able to click back on the Highwind. How someone found that out.....

Seen it in youtube after I played the game. Like you I wondered to myself how someone found it.

I've no idea how I've gone through life without playing that.

Whoa, finished, epic, but what the feck?

The meteor actually killed everyone?!

Also, Sephiroths Super Nova move can feck right off. I was almost tempted to go have a wank while I waited.

No, it didn't. The flower girl saved the day. Supernova lasts forever and you should be careful cause it does damage 31/32 of hit points to each party member. It's an easy fight if you are prepared though.

Did you defeated the two optional weapons?

Nope, went straight for that dungeon. I struggled through the whole dungeon to be honest. Luckily I had a whole bunch of megaelixirs stocked up or I doubt I would have beaten it. Thought it was very tricky how they stack those last 3 bosses on top of each other without a chance to save in between.

Thats what i assumed, especially as i know theres a movie sequel  I just read too much into the Red XIII/Midgar scene at the end.
That Red XIII scene is generations later, he has a lifespan of hundreds of years. IIRC, it's over 100 years after the end of the game.

There is a materia (forgot it's name) that lets you duplicate all items. I went in the final dungeon with 99 megaelixirs, Elixirs, X Potions, Ethers, Hero Drinks and all other stuff. A great materia and IIRC it is very easy to miss, if I am not mistaken it's in the end of the dungeon when you meet the Turks for the last time.

W-Item is the materia, can be excavated if you miss it in Midgar.

That's actually a bug in the game.

Oh, and those who don't like FF8 probably never got past Adel or never really understood the system or the story.

8 was great, but they needed difficulty settings or something instead of scaling there. I think out of all the FFs that 8's system was the most enjoyable and rewarding, but it was poorly balanced unfortunately. With a game like 9 you can actually make a decent challenge out of it at times by avoiding the grind, but that was the best part of 8, which meant you would actually miss out if you were to try and make it challenging.

Still, hugely enjoyable game anyway. The cast didn't hit the heights of 7 or 9, but the story was strong and the mechanics were excellent. Pretty bold stuff going with something that different looking back, although I suppose after 7 there was no danger of FF8 not selling.

As much as I love 8, I think the story got a bit too weird later on(as said about Final Fantasies in general before, still better than most everything else). It has one of the very best early stories though, mercenaries mixed up in war, politics, and the beginnings of love, excellent, excellent stuff.

VIII was amazing until that big Orphanage reveal, that was so stupid.

Thankyou so much, I think I've never heard anyone mention that, I remember trying to talk to Edea for ages and it turned out I had to talk to Sid (Hidden at the beach) and I was waiting for ages for this to activate to get Edea's card....

I have IX all lined up to play now :) Eric and Quake I hold you both responsible for the recommendations of :

IX, then VII then X or X-II I'll play :)

That was a good story!! Possessed the Mrs, went into Space found a fecking Raganork. Game on.

I've played all the FF games (and I mean all, SNES included) and I tink I can safely say, they are, and will always be the greatest gaming series I've ever played. VII alone is the greatest game ever made, and bar a few hiccups (VIII anyone?) they're all quite brilliant.

I'll be getting myself a PS3 for XIII, but seeing as it's out later this year in Japan, I won't have to get one for another 2 years...

So that scene alone made the whole game a hiccup?
I have to disagree, but i can respect that you didn't like that twist in the story as it's pretty cliche.

 Why is everyone quoting that 5/6 year old post?

FFVIII was a really good game but probably the weakest one from IV - X and had a lot of 'hiccups'.

Personally i think FFVII is overrated (though still a great game), it has multiple bugs and errors in the gameplay as well as an obvious end.
The so-called "unbeatable" weapons are cheesecake with the proper preparations and practically everything can be beaten as soon as you get Cait Sith. As someone else stated, FFVI is better in almost every way, even when it comes to story.

Final Fantasy IX is fantastic
It let's you get to know each character, it actually has a superboss whom even being fully prepared against doesn't make you unkillable, the chocographs gives it a great adventure/treasure seeking feel, the story is good and the music is awesome. It does however lack any kind advanced character development and Tetra Master is such a bad game compared to Triple Triad on the Final Fantasy VIII.

Final Fantasy X was another great game, but Tidus was pretty much a pussy.
You can call Cloud and Squall the big emo-boys but at least they had some guts in the end.
The sparegrid system introduced some paths for character development (though everyone eventually ended up with the same) and was a fun twist.
Blitzball was brilliant on everything from Ramstein - Otherworld to the actual game and how they included it in the story.
The Arena, the Dark Aeons and Penance gave the game a certain difficulty at end-game but the fact that Yojimbo's Zanmato was possible to use almost all the time made it all easy for those who got stuck and still wanted to brag about beating the mentioned challenges.

I simply cannot get myself to rank FFVII or FFX over FFVIII, but Final Fantasy VI was a masterpiece and apart from Tetra Master and the lack of any advanced character development on FFIX it was right up there with FFVI.

Of those i would have ranked them like this:
1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Final Fantasy IX
3. Final Fantasy VIII
4. Final Fantasy VII
5. Final Fantasy X

VII >= VI > IX > IV >= VIII for me.

As I have said for me VII is he best in most of the things. VI is pretty close but the second part of the game wasn't that good fot it's standards. It has the best companions and memorable scenes though.
IX was great too, though it's mechanics were a bit less complicated. IV had a great story and was more difficult than others. VIII had many problems though the story was great. Charactets were shit and stealing magic from enemies was unfun.

1 VIII
2 VI
3 IX
4 VII
5 XII

VIII is the most incredible video gaming experience I've ever had. I felt that I was able to relate to the characters, which were great, and the story was beautifully written. Best soundtrack from any game I've played aswell, could sit and listen to it all day. I can understand why people dislike it due to the imbalance but I have a personal crush on it.

That's a tasty line up of games to go through.
XII is so underrated, play it you bastards!
feck you, never again!

Maybe someday, maybe...

I'm feeling pretty safe there. :D

Goes without saying, but don't play X-2 before going through all of X! You won't know who anyone is, what happened, why the cast has changed, what the world was like before, etc...

Not exactly an impossible game to understand in isolation but it's because X was so good that certain aspects of X-2 are more tolerable than they should be.

Looks like I'm still the only one I know who didn't hate 13. It wasn't the best, but I still enjoyed it, particularly the battle system. I think it just took too long for the game to open up e.g. it was only after Chapter 10 (?) that you could choose your own party. But I didn't hate it.

Really? I haven't played past 10 but was under the impression they sucked.

I found the story, soundtrack and sidequests to be a bit of snoozefest compared to 10, in all honesty. It's a highly challenging game at times but I just didn't find it very entertaining.

Will have to give it another chance though at some point.

I just couldn't stomach the combat, and the story wasn't good enough to make me plow through it regardless. Still, miles better than 13 was, that was absolutely awful, 13-2 seems an improvement on that, but I only played the demo.

Poor man's Xenoblade for combat. :D Don't remember the story now, to be honest...

I say that about the soundtrack, but I went back and listened to it and it's really good music. It just doesn't enrich the game to the extent the previous ones do. It's like what was said on here about Terra's theme making the FF6 world map almost delightful - there's nothing like that on the FF12 soundtrack I don't think. It's in a very different style.

*Ahh...looking at it now, maybe I should give it another chance. I did find a lot of it a bit dry, but I'm open to the possibility that I just thought it was too different and didn't see for what it was.

Is Xenoblade not a proper ARPG?
