They start getting more fun as you go through the game and your characters get stronger. It's not quite like it is with something like Xenogears where the battles are just absolutely flat out boring (it's a good job the storyline was quality on that game). You're materia starts to level up with the AP you get from battles and it gets a lot better when it does. You get more limit breaks too, and a tip on that is that you get the second limit break in a level by using the first one, and you then get the next level of limit breaks by killing enemies.

For example, with Cloud you'll have Braver at the moment probably (the first level 1 limit break), and you'll get the next level 1 limit break very soon when you use Braver a certain amount of times. When you get the next one (level 1, 2nd limit break), you need to kill a certain amount of enemies with or without it to get the next set. So it works like: use first limit break of the level, unlock the second one, kill enemies, unlock the next level of limit breaks, use limit breaks, unlock 2nd limit break, kill enemies, unlock next set, etc.... This isn't a spoiler because it doesn't actually tell you that this is how it works. Hopefully this will give more incentive to actually fight battles too.

Hypers give you limit breaks faster too so they're great even if they make you take more damage.

Shit, I need to play this again.

I've got the second limit break and it's quite great. It makes an instant kill in non bosses. Also, Aeris first limit break is a great tool cause it generates a lot of HP points for all my fighters.

I am not quite understanding how materia works and didn't know that it starts to level up. Currently I am using on Cloud, the lightning and cure materia, while in the others fire or ice. How can I get more spots to use materia with a single character (currently only Cloud can use 2 materia at the same time). Any hints and tips for materia, and which materia should I use would be appreciated cause it's my first FF game and I am not familiar with it. Also, can I equip multiple weapons in a single character, and does weapons level up or not. Also, a curios thing, does my companions that are not with me during the fighting level up or not? Hell, this game is a lot more complicated than I thought.

On another note, the story really looks great.

Materia takes a while to get used to, I don't really want to make too many different suggestions as there is a lot of new materia to discover in the game. Just have fun learning and have a bit of a mess about with it, there's not much you can really do with it at the stage you're in anyway. As you progress you'll get different types of materia that aid you in a variety of ways.

You can't equip multiple weapons no, you buy weapons and bangles as you progress and these enable you to hold more materia (beware though, materia alters your hp/mp as well as strength etc, not always for the better, so keep an eye out). Characters outside of the party level up but just not as quickly.

Revan, the game is designed so that you get weapons with more materia slots when you need them. You needn't worry. After a while you can decide between materia slots and growth rate but that's a long way off.

No problem.

Green materia give you spells. Fire, Ice, Lightning, Cure etc...
To that green materia, you can sometimes attach blue 'support' materia. For example, you can mix fire with 'all' (you need to have joined materia slots to do this as opposed to the individual slots you put them in), which means you can cast 'Fire all'. You can also get yourself Aeris' first limit break on any character in effect by attaching 'cure' and 'all' in the same slot. How many times you can use the effects of 'all' are limited to how many stars are lit up on 'all'. At this point, it's unlikely you will have any materia levelled up - it usually starts properly happening after Junon without any training. 'All' will not take long to level up for the first time though, and if you level it up fully you can sell it for 1.4m gil! This is the easiest way to make money on the whole game I'd say, although it will still take a fair bit of time even with the battles at the end to do it from scratch. You can eventually get hundreds of AP per battle though which will speed things up. When materia does level up, it will tell you after the battle.

Another thing, whether you put materia in the weapon slots or armour slot may effect the use of that materia. There is a materia for example called the 'elemental' materia (I think) which can be used to either add an element to your attack or defence. If you join lightning with elemental materia in an armour slot, depending on how levelled the materia is, you will either reduce or absorb lightning damage.

Pink materia usually has some sort of stat based benefit or combat based benefit. I'm guessing up to now the only one of these you'll have is the one in Aeris' garden (cover). You don't need to join these up with anything from memory. It doesn't matter where you equip these either.

Yellow materia will add a command to your list of stuff during battle, and you'll come across more of that sort of materia quite soon. There are a few of these that you can link up with other materia but these mostly work on their own in any slot. There are a few amazing pieces of yellow materia and one is to come up quite soon and should be equipped straight away. Would recommend asking on here about how to make it better unless you want to just go for it and strike lucky. It'll save going on the internet and trying to come across something without spoiling the storyline massively. There is a really iconic moment in this game that is plastered absolutely everywhere on these sort of websites - it can even be found in this thread! ;)

There is another sort of materia you can equip too which I won't say anything about at this moment because you probably won't have it just yet. It won't require any explanation, though.

On whether you can equip more materia, with newer weapons and armour you will get more or less slots. These slots will have different growth rates as well, meaning that if you have a weapon with a 'double' growth rate, placing materia in that slot will give double AP to the materia equipped there per fight. Some weapons have no growth and should be avoided if you are trying to fit materia in to level up. Never put 'all' in a weapon or piece of amour with no growth. 'All' is your money maker later on in the game, but it needs to be able to level up. Weapons/Armour with no growth are quite rare though, to be fair.

Thanks KingEric. Frakking hell, this game must be the most complicated RPG I have ever played, didn't know that there are so many materia. I have only ice, bolt, fire, cure and cover. Looks that I will spend a lot of time trying to get the best materia combination. Didn't know that I can change my armor, probably it is later in the game.

Also, I hope that you can get a girlfriend like in BioWare games. Aeris!

Yeah, she's great. :D A very likeable character. Newer armour and weapons come later on as you progress and make a huge difference.

Basically cure with all is a must (you can still choose to just cure one person if you want), I was always a bit OCD and kept Ice and Lightning with Cloud. Right now, if you are in Midgar, Lightning and all is a good bet too as there's a few mechanical chaps around that are weak to it.

Anyways, just enjoy it mate. Don't worry too much about finding some perfect formula or strategy, just muck about and you'll figure out what you like. You wait till you get the summons!

Okay guys I am at level 22 and I just killed Jenova or whatever was her name.

2 things I need to clarify. If I upgrade a type of mater, I have seen that the other materia of that type are not upgraded, for example I have lightning level 2 on Cloud but the other lightning materia I have is not upgraded. So, is there a special form of upgrading or perpaps reproducing a kind of materia, or the only way is to upgrade that second lightning from the beginning.

The second question is how do I use talismans, where do I put them?

By the way I have a good weapon with double materia growth and I just bought 4 same of a kind armours who despite not having a good defense have double materia growth.

Your materia levels up with AP, but only the materia that you have equipped on your characters levels up. You can look at what materia is at what point by looking at your equipped materia and looking at the bit where it tells you how much AP is needed until it levels up. Cloud's will naturally level up first as you will have had it equipped on him since the start of the game. Whenever you get new materia, irrespective of whether it's a duplicate of another type, you need to level it up from the start.

A talisman is an accessory from what I remember, by the way.

The game and story accelerates massively in quality very soon - I am very envious. You're still only about half way through the first disc out of 3, too. :D

I meant about accessories but I found it. Anyway, the game is turning into one of the best games I have ever played and definitely the most complex RPG I have ever played. The only downside are the random battles, which are pretty annoying but I must fight a lot of them to level up.

Yup, told you, it takes a while to get going but once it does it's brilliant.

Anyway, I'd recommend playing the rest of the PS1/PS2 games after that, avoid FFXIII and above, they're shit.

I'd go for IX first, then X, then VIII (which is the weakest, but still good).

Also, if you feel like you can fathom 8 bit graphics, FFVI is probably the greatest videogame ever made, like, ever.

I don't have a playstation and don't plan to buy one so I could play only in my laptop. 8 is available on windows so next I will play it, and then I need to see which are available on emulator. Hopefully 6 and 9 are.

Oh Man I am so jelous Revan. I have never had another video game experience like the first play through of final fantasy 7. (The closest I came was replaying it for the first time on PS3 and 42" flat screen rather then the original 15" portable )

BEST GAME EVER

In fact as soon as Im home Im going to statrt it again :)

What part are you at, Revan? Have you got to Cosmo Canyon yet?

I am at that stupid town when I must paid with another currency in order to save the game. Also they robbed me 3000 gil for an one time entrance there.

It's brillian really. When I finish this I'll be jealous to anyone who is playing it for tge first time.

Ah the good old Gold Saucer, the story really does kick on from there with big character developments coming thick and fast.

I haven't played it once since I cleared it the one and only time, and still have my pre-release copy.

It might be nearing the time for round two, though I reckon I can still remember most of it.

Think I've played it right through about 4 times down the years, it's never the same as the first play though :(

feck, you've made me reminisce about FF7 now, and I'm suddenly not so sure I prefer FF8... they were both SO GOOD. Even 9 and 10 were pretty good! Why did FF have to turn to shit?! Why?! *Breaks down into tears*.

Never know why but I always place 8 slightly beneath 7, 9 and 10. There's no good reason for it, though. It's amazing, and even though the junctioning system was radically different from everything else it pulled it off fantastically. The card game and refining system is one of the most rewarding sidequests in the whole series, too.

You're in for a treat as far as complexity goes if you ever play 8, Revan. Also, that stupid town you're at...you'll be wanting to spend a lot of time there in the future. :D

I've never played an FF game myself but i watched a livestream of FF6 a couple of months ago and damn, that game is amazing. I really get why everyone says it's the best one (or one of the best). I reckon i'll get FF7 myself when i've got a bit more time, it looks like it's right up my street to be honest. I'm not sure why i haven't played it already!

There's that image again. Don't click it Revan, it's everywhere.

I disagree with a lot of that, I must admit. I cannot for the life of me see how anyone could say 6 has a better storyline than 7s, for example. By the same token, I can't fathom anyone who would put down 6 as having the second worst OST in all of Final Fantasy...that's just insane! It's comfortably a league above that of 2, 4, and 10-2 in my opinion. Pretty much every single track on that was at least listenable, with the vast majority of them being class.

As for 9's...well Uematsu himself said that was his favourite from what I remember. It is a fantastic soundtrack even if the main theme is perhaps a bit too frequently used for my liking. Music and storylines are surely things that can be measured mostly in their own right, so I really don't agree on these counts.

Also, as for the difficulty of FFX, some of the Dark Aeons, Penance, Monster Arena original creations, etc... rank amongst the toughest enemies in all of Final Fantasy. You get absolutely dicked on by all of them if you're not in tip top shape, but perhaps it is more getting at the difficulty of normal bosses than the others. Out of all the FF games I've played, 6 was comfortably the easiest on that count.

I disagree with a lot of that, I must admit.

Yeah I can't be arsed to debate it, but I don't agree with everything.

I do agree that 4 is underrated though, especially when so many people bang on about 6 (though again I played it when it was out so maybe my thoughts are skewed).

I do, however, think 6 is the best story. At least it's the most accomplished how it meshes in all 14 characters and doesn't drop the ball on any of them. It, like most everything else, is a preference thing though.

I will have to go through IV again, it's been ages now. Remember that being one of the most fun, with V probably being the most amusing and 6 being the best of that platform. All great games.

I don't know about 5, it was good at the time (being FF and all), but it was definitely the most samey. 4 is definitely the one to go back to though, in fact Revan if you are going to go and play them, play 4 then 6.

Oh and 6 is the best of any platform. But we won't start that again
