The fastest man on Earth -the road to the 100m final.

Apparently, he'll pay more attention to the WR in future. Which means he'll probably won't showboat till 10 metres to go, instead of 20.

That is completely insane, talk about the definition of a one man race.

Maybe Dwane Chambers should be pleased he was barred after all.

He takes short breaths during the 100 metres. Usually, sprinters hold their breath for the full race. Weird.

Why is the winner of the 100m sprint the fastest man on earth?

They run 50m indoor and some outdoor meets

Or perhaps the fastest man is the quickest to perform a lap of the track. If a savage wild beast was chasing you, and safety was 400m away, you'd rather be a specialist at that distance than the 100m. You might initially get away quicker, but you'd soon be dog meat...

I think its the way it looks, but actually, in terms of average speed, 200m is quicker...

That's only really been the case since Michael Johnson smashed the record in Atlanta. Traditionally, the 100m has seen the fastest average speed of any sprint. The 200m is now quicker, and probably will be for the foreseeable future, but the World's Fastest Man moniker has stuck with the men's 100m champ simply because that's what he's always been called.

There's also something a bit more pure and primal about running really fast in a straight line against a lineup of other men, and the 100m is the longest (and fastest) distance over which that happens. Because of the staggered start of the 200m, that imagery is something that the longer distance will never match. The 100m will continue to be the blue riband event.

He can break it, just might be a little to early for him in these games. You can never write him off after that performance though.

His fastest time in the 200m is 19.67 so would need to shave off over a third of a second to break it, that is a tough ask in a short distance. Then again when Johnson set that record his previous best was around 19.66 so like you say it could happen. He probably will do it in the future but even then that Michael Johnson time is incredible and I don't think anyone has even run below 19.62 ever since.

Can you believe the US TV didn't even show the 100m live. They had the USA vs Spain basketball on instead. They are not showing the 100m semis and final until this evening US time.

I can't get my head around this......its the blue ribbon event of the freaking games.......seeing the fastest man EVER.

In the slow-mo, he almost stumbled and had to drag his toes from the start, on top of that, he was jogging the last 15-20 metres pumping his chest and waving his arm. He's definitly gonna run 9.50 sooner rather than later.

He'll do what Serge Bubka did in the pole vault.

In private training sessions, Bubka's unofficial world record is about 7cm higher than the highest vault he achieved in actual competition.

What he did was quite clever.

Most athletics events pay athletes a prize for breaking the world record. So, rather than go all out to jump the highest he could at every meet, he'd only just break his own world record by tiny amount each time. That way, he was able to win record breaking prize after record breaking prize, all the while knowing that he had plenty left in the tank.

At the Olympics, you don't get a prize for breaking a record, so I can see Bolt wanting to save himself for the Grand Prix events in Europe. He'll be raking it in at the likes of Zurich and Monaco.

What's not to believe? The Americans don't care about sports unless they are the best at them - hence all their own bastardised versions of the sports that the rest of the world plays and the 'world' champions that those sports produce.

He'll become a superstar after today's win. I'm sure he'll be raking in the cash from now on, regardless. But I really can;t wait to see him give the 100m his full attention. He'll crack 9.5, surely. Whatever happens, I doubt his record will be touched by any other sprinter for a long long time. He's really out on his own. That race was reminiscent of Seoul 88, where Ben Johnson wiped the floor with the rest of the field. I think Johnson could've ran under 9.7, but he wouldn't have had anything left in the tank, unlike Bolt.

But that race was incredible, Bolt was something different. 21 too, he's gonna be around for years now.

It'll be interesting to see if he balances his training to continue in both the 100 and 200 for the rest of his career or if he maybe even goes on to be a 200/400 runner like Johnson did.

Well they do have guys in the event. Tyson Gay was fancied for a medal before he failed to make the final, and two other yanks were in the final.

Its just shocking they didn't show it live, my god it was 10:30 am in the morning here. You get to see the fastest man in the world....can't bet that no matter where he is from IMO.

What a run; watch him go out and fail a drug test and make us all look stupid now

That was unbelievable! Celebrating the last 20 meters and breaking the WR...

If the 100 metre WR is 9.68, and the 200 metre WR is 19.32 (9.66 split) then all he needs to do is keep the same pace up for the second half -- something he actually seems capable of doing!

They're all on the juice, anyway. Great run, full stop.

I believe Bolt volunteers for extra drug tests and is active in the anti-doping stuff.

He's so fast because he has such long legs but has managed to coordinate himself and get the leg speed of the stockier sprinters, something no other 6ft 5 person has done, infact they haven't tried

Michael Johnsons reaction

abit OTT when he says "Michael Phelps, Michael who?"[/QUOTE]

Yep, to be fair Michael Phelps shits all over Michael Johnson and Bolt in terms of Olympic success already so he is out of his depth with that remark.

true but Bolt can say he is THE fastest man in the world, which is special.

In all fairness the multiple Olympic golds is a lot easier in swimming. Far too many variations of the same thing. That is why they are reviewing the event and might trim it down to 24 golds from 32.

If track had 50m, 100m, 150m, 200m, 300m, 50m relay, 100m relay, 200m relay etc....I am sure we would have a few athletes with a stack of golds.

Phelps still must complete the heats for those events and such, but yes I do agree with that. Still, a bit OTT, i mean he is the greatest Olympian of all time.

Steriods

Steriods

Steriods...

100M is probably the most marketable stuff for IOC in athletics field which lacks real stars. These days apart from the opening cermony hardly any one is bothered about them. Breaking records is a nice way to market the event...

Big Ben is laughing out of his Arse.

Jesse Owens is sobbing from the heavens.

Whats a steriod, and does it make you run faster?

Maybe we should ask will the 100m ever be won by a white guy again OR someone without Jamaican blood in them.
