The fastest man on Earth -the road to the 100m final.

Simply mind blowing

Johnson's right though, Phelps is just a bloke in speedos mucking about in the pool compared to this.

To be fair, you're both morons. Its all and well for the Usian Bolt Wankfest 2008 but Phelps has dominated his sport over all distances and strokes. Usian Bolt won a sub 10 second race. Fair enough he can now claim to be the fastest man on the planet, but this Olympic Games belongs to one man, a record breaker, OFFICALLY the greatest Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps.

Michael Johnson was out of his depth with that comment, obviously he will side with the sprinter but he knows feck all about swimming. Disrespectful towards Phelps.

Why didn't asafa powell and tyson gay compete in the 200 metres?

Tyson Gay injured himself in the 200 at the US trials and didn't make the team in that event. No idea about Powell. He's run about a 19.9 200 in the past, so he should have the speed to be in the top 3 in Jamaica. Maybe he just doesn't really like the event.

Seriously the whole Olympics are being carried by Bolt and Phelps.

I couldn't give a shit about the swimming in fairness, the athletics are what I wanted to see. But now the Chinese hurdler and our top sprinter (Steffenson) are out of the individuals all that the games have got going for them is Bolt.

I can't get over him. He'll be the best there is.

He's probably on steroids

That is always the first thought with sprinters but I think this kid is clean. He doesn't have that buffed look of past abusers, and he is the prototypical height or build for a sprinter. I think he is just a freak of nature with a god given skill.

Fair enough,

he'll be tested out of his arse after he bolts the 200

i'd be surprised if he was actually on gear, and if he is no doubt that would be the end of the olympics (credibility and emotionally) forever.

Track would survive, it already has a big black eye though

Hahhahaha feck me did anyone see his semi just then?

He would've psyched out the whole field with that performance. After the turn he just dropped a few gears, kept with crawford and even had a lazy look over at him.

I dont believe for a moment that Bolt is on drugs, every generation produces an amazing athlete, hes the one for this. I expect him to go for the record.

What an ignorant and stupid comment!

Phelps is amazing. Greatest swimmer of all time no doubt. But hardly anyone cares about swimming. The Olympics are mainly about the athletics.

Would you rather be the fastest man in the world? Or the fastest man who can swim looking like a butterfly?

The world is covered by 70% water

Phelps's achievements are amazing but Bolt's have a much loner lasting impact on most people. Lots of people have won multiple medals in swimming, even in this games several have over 3.

Winning the 100m and 200m at the same games is special, breaking both WR is remarkable, and doing it so effortlessly is incredible.

If Phelps and Bolt were on the open market looking for a sports wear sponsor right now my guess is Bolt would command a hell of a lot more money.

Hehe, there's a story in the papers this morning in which Usain Bolt was supposed to have told a press conference that Freddie Flintoff was one of his sporting heroes. By all accounts, he left the mainly Chinese audience scratching their heads.

Jamaica's Asafa Powell ran the second fastest 100m in history at the Athletissima Grand Prix on Tuesday.

Powell clocked 9.72 seconds to equal the old world record set by compatriot Usain Bolt in New York last May.

Bolt, who won the 200m in Lausanne in a time of 19.63, set the 100m world record of 9.69 in Beijing last month.

The 26-year-old Powell, who held the world record between June 2005 and May 2008 with times of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds, finished fifth in Beijing.

On Monday, the 25-year-old Powell said Bolt's thrilling run at the Olympics has inspired him to target a time of 9.59.

"Two years ago I said to myself I could go 9.65 or faster but based on how Usain is running it's my aim now to go below 9.6," said Powell.

Who knows? Maybe I'm not the guy for those big championships?

Asafa Powell
"Usain can obviously run very fast but I'm not going to put him out of my reach."

The 21-year-old Bolt stunned the sporting world two weeks ago when he knocked 0.05 seconds off Powell's previous mark despite easing up to celebrate before he crossed the line.

"I'd say in the Olympic 100m it looked like Usain could have run 9.63, 9.65 maybe," said Powell.

"I was shocked to see what he did in the race, it was ridiculous.

"I can't imagine the times he's capable of running at the moment. He's the man to beat right now but before it was me and if I can break another world record then I'll be the one back in the spotlight."

Powell, who also finished fifth at the 2004 Athens Olympics despite going into the Games as favourite, said he had not written off his hopes of winning an individual gold.

606: DEBATE
Why does Powell always produce his best outside of major championships?
"The 2012 London Games will be my last opportunity and Beijing was certainly my best chance but you never give up," he said.

"I've got no idea why I'm always winning on the circuit but then finishing fifth at the Olympics. Maybe if it was just a one-off race without the qualifying rounds I would have done better.

"Who knows? Maybe I'm not the guy for those big championships but just the guy to compete in the Grand Prix and Golden League meetings. It's just unfortunate."

------------------------------------------------------------

If only he could do it on the big stage, he and Bolt could have a brilliant rivalry.

Typical. Not that he would be able to match Bolt at the moment but his performance at the Olympics was disappointing except for in the relay.

Where there was not as much pressure of course.
