The F1 Thread 2015 Season

I've already got a new favourite F1 gif for 2015, gonna take some beating this one:

Ferrari mechanics won't be popular with Kimi today.

Schwarzenneger doing the interview seems to have been the most exciting thing that happened

Mclaren finishing a race is a positive for the team i guess.
Definitely, it was the race sim they never managed in testing. Just during an actual race. Shame Magnussen's engine had to go kablooey before the start though. Dennis says they're currently 150HP off, which explains much of the atrocious pace. Hopefully they can run it a bit harder in Malaysia (though with the heat, may be unlikely).

If anyone knows where I can watch the full race online a pm would be awesome. Managed to avoid the result so far.

Highlights are on BBC 1 at 13:15.

Yea. Honda were talking about the using less aggressive setting because of engine numbers and not having tested in higher temperature conditions. But this was after the qualifying i believe,

Is it worth watching the whole thing? Trying to avoid the result and I have it recorded so might watch it later, but I don't particularly want to watch it all if its Hamilton-Rosberg strolling to a 1-2. If it is with watching, just say yes please. Thanks

just reading only 11 cars finished the race , is it worth watching?

No.

It was a crap race

I did get up in the middle of the night and watch it, with hindsight should of just watched the highlights. I did laugh at Arnie doing the interviews on the podium.

The huge worry for Rosberg has to be that since the radio ban, he's only won 1 race and even then that's a race (Brazil) that Hamilton arguably should have won.

FFS Horner moaning already, does not like it now Red Bull are not the top team.

He has a point though, teams should be able to develop their engines over the course of a season with a cap in place and not this ridiculous tokens system it could add to the spectacle, we all want to watch the leaders battling it out and realistically when its one team at the front that's not going to happen that much.

Horner isn't wrong in his criticism of Renault, its piss poor for them to have gone backwards at this stage. They should open up engine development further, more tokens or whatever because the last thing we want is a spec series or a situation we have now where one engine is clearly better and the rest won't catch them until the regulations change again.

I think he needs to hush about FIA regulations though, Red Bull skirted around rules with double diffusers, flexible bodywork, exhaust blowing etc (and they were not the only ones ofcourse). As far as we know the Mercedes car is just an outright mechanical and aero marvel, they aren't bending any rules to achieve that massive advantage, its just a result of long term planning, talent and hard work. Red Bull had that period too where they had a car that was just better than everything else but lets not talk like their wings weren't scraping the ground in corners because of flex, it was a clear bending of the rules and the FIA was well within their rights to outlaw it.

I suspect the FIA would love to find something to slow Mercedes down, but if everything is legal then what can they do?

The most hilarious thing from the race was that McLaren weren't using the Honda engine near 100% so they could finish and Button commenting there was quite a bit of fuel saving going on.

Problem with Horner is he's put his eggs in the Renault basket, who haven't really pushed or developed the V6 engine to the level they were whining about when the V8's were about (Renault were one of the engine manufacturers who voted for the change). They had all of the winter break to improve but its clear they haven't & Ferrari have made a jump on them and bizarrely Ferrari are now coming out with commendable comments from Arrivabene

Our job is to attack Mercedes on the track, not to change the rules.

Horner rightly needs to work with Renault to get something sorted & not depend on the FIA to fix Renault's shortcomings.

I don't think Renault are that fussed about F1 but because they pushed for the change they're sort of obligated to carry on.

Certainly the lack of money pumped into the Lotus team and then the lack of engine development suggests that.

ERS isn't working anywhere the level it's supposed to be, so I imagine that has a fair knock-on in terms of fuel efficiency. Not to mention engine maps that they're still pretty clueless about given the lack of running. Given how bad quali and preseason were, I'm not quite as downcast after seeing the race result. Delaying any major conclusions until Barcelona.

The Lotus team hasnt been their works team for the past few years. Red Bull is their works team now, but i think Horner needs to work with them rather than constantly chastise them publically.

Also, its pretty clear that Renault aren't pushing hard on using the tokens - maybe Red Bull just need to work on this first rather than the FIA 'equalisation' rule.

Tokens used so far:
Ferrari: 22 of 32 tokens
Mercedes: 25 of 32 tokens
Renault: 20 of 32 tokens

Tokens left to spend:
Ferrari: 10 tokens
Honda: 9 tokens
Mercedes: 7 tokens
Renault: 12 tokens

A bit worrying that Honda are so far behind and yet have used the second most tokens.

Their number isn't related to how many they've used, they were allocated the average of those remaining for the other three manufacturers.

What is the issue with the Honda engine?
I guess a bit of both, but is it massively underpowered in comparison or to make it last are they having to run it below it's maximum capability?

I think Ron said before the race started that they were going to use the race as a testing session. Which means they probably did have the revs turned down quite a bit to ensure they finished.

Honda are basically 2 or 3 years behind the development curve. They were never going to come in and simply challenge the others. It will take a while before they get it right. Which is why Alonso moving there was surprise considering he wanted to be in a race winning car right away.

We don't know on the power front, simply because it's never as far as we know been run at full power. Honda say it's as powerful as the Merc, but until it happens in a race that's just PR. But yeah, this weekend basically had the engine detuned and the ERS barely working.
