The F1 Thread 2015 Season

Ron Dennis sounds as downbeat as I've ever heard him, usually he likes to do some Ronspeak for some sort of positive. McLaren 6 seconds off pole, 6!

Bleh. Think I'll skip the race too.

Mclaren.

It was always an odd decision for Alonso to dump Ferrari for Mclaren of all places. This was always going to be a tough year with a new engine supplier. Although I'm sure they didn't think it would be this tough.

To think everyone was second guessing Hamilton when he jumped ship. I feel very sorry for the Mclaren team. That has to be very disheartening.

he knew with the 1) new engines , benz was miles ahead in R&D 2) less time spent on publicity tours meant more time in the car. i don't feel sorry at all and i like the mac. when they had engine parity they fuc4ed up in the pits. almost every time they boxed two seasons ago they'd f something up.

red bull dominated for years get used to the silver arrows to do the same under herr wolff.

I think they're playing it safe at the moment, with the limited amount of running they have done Im guessing they still trying to work out how far they push the engine.

McLaren's biggest problem is that Honda will always be behind the curve, look at Renault now, they're still miles behind Mercedes. Everyone thought Hamilton was crazy for leaving McLaren, it now looks like a one of the smartest driver moves ever made. If he stayed at McLaren he'd have had a mental breakdown by now. They've had the same stiff chassis/aero problem for absolute years with a good engine, now they've fixed that and got an engine which is going to take a long time to come to parity.

For a team with such incredible resources they are absolutely awful at adapting to big rule changes. I'll never forget the absolute dog they made in 2009 after winning the WDC, even then Hamilton managed to drag it into the points in the first race before his brainfart.

No surprises then though I expected better from Red Bull (or should I say Renault!).

Are Mercedes (the engine department) that good or is it that everyone else is that bad? Honda = Shocking. Renault, seriously even a year later. Ferrari have improved which is great to see but that's because they have been shocking all over for the past few years. The other problem is this 'tokens' nonsense or whatever it is. Teams can only develop their engine in so many areas to cut cost? How is anyone going to catch up to Mercedes? Why would an engine manufacturer want to join now and become the new Honda because of limited R&D. Sounds ridiculous from what little I know.

I know tokens aren't everything (electronics, reliability, etc.) but they will obviously play a big part in engine development. Here are how many tokens each team apparently has remaining this season.

Mercedes: 7 tokens
Ferrari: 10 tokens
Renault: 12 tokens
Honda: 9 tokens (based on average of what others didn't use)

We haven't had the race yet and Renault are supposedly good on fuel efficiency whilst Ferrari less so, it will be interesting to see how it plays out but surely it's physically impossible to catch up!?

I'm not particularly mechanically minded but a mate of mine who is was telling me about how Mercedes have basically revolutionised the turbo engine by splitting up the intake and other associated parts of the turbo unit.

Apparently it's far more efficient which is backed up with their fuel consumption (still can't believe F1 looks at that) but also runs cooler and produces more power.

I'm obviously not explaining it very well because I don't fully understand it, but it seems Merc are definitely in a league of one in terms of engines.

That's correct, its very clever and caught everyone short last year. Let Brundle explain it better

I don't think the actual McLaren is a bad car, I mean its nowhere near the limit so its hard to judge it but it looks fairly stable and its not like Button is wrestling the thing around like say the McLaren of early 2009. The Honda engine is just down on power because they cannot run it at 100% yet, the issue is if thats a major fix then they might be fecked all year or it might be something they can fix in a month or less and be right back in it.

yeah I see your point , just looking at first Q1 looks to have no speed, hopefully they will sort it out , I like Button and he deserves a decent drive.

Has anyone copied that this year.

No idea, haven't heard too much about it since last year. I think Mercedes were the only team that used it last year despite others having the same engine, you have to assume the Mercedes powered teams now have it.

Bottas not racing due to a back injury.

So only 17 cars starting this race. Not great.

Looks like Magnussen engine went bang. Would this mean Alonso would lose an engine?

And Kyyvats red bull has already stopped.

Is Bernie even gonna meet contractual obligations for race starters?
