Not only Red Bull with problems

Decentish day for Red Bull. 60 odd laps and third fastest. Perhaps their best day of the winter.

Lets see how Vettel does in the last two days.

He will be a lot better than Ricardio. I can see him surprisingly a lot of people who say he can't race

There are people who think this? How the hell did he win all of those titles then?

If they mean how he is as a driver in the pack, take the example of the year he went into the last race with Alonso nearby in the championship, and spun out on the first lap in dead last; he came back to get the points needed and won the championship.

I never understand the people who says he can race, he is an excellent driver.
My comment was more to do with seeing what he can do with a struggling car, he has proven before he has the ability to get more out of a car than most other drivers.
Mind you I think Red Bull will get their act together and the car will perform.

I know you can't put much store in testing, but its seriously looking like Williams might be contending
Potentially between them and the Mercs in Australia, the way things have been going for everyone else lately.

The only thing I read into preseason testing is the reliability of the car based on how many laps they do and how much they break down. The times mean nothing because you never know what way the car is set up, what different stuff they may be experimenting with and what fuel loads they are running on what settings.

I remember Schumi had a great preseason not so long ago, topped the timing sheets with Merc and then spent most of the year half way down the grid.

Hope I am not stepping on anybody toes.
I have set up a league on http://www.fantasyracers.com/
The League is called RedCafe League, it is number 809 and the password is redcafe.

Feel free to join, it has been good the past few seasons it has been done.
Any newbie that is reading this , feel free to join in also.

I've just joined, mate. MajorTom99 is my name (someone took MajorTom, hmmm) and my team name is Dynamic Chassis.

Did you finish 20th overall last year out of everyone on that site?

Joined. Gone for strategy 2 as always because I will never remember to make changes through the year.

With such an unpredictable season it should be interesting to see who picks well.

I have gone for strategy one, don't really know what shape any of the cars are going to be in so to be able to change should stand me in good stead. How many drivers do you lot pick? Do you go for the full six or the best four you possibly can with 45 million?

I've gone with four and I have half a mil left over.

I'm not expecting to do any good, but it's a laugh at the end of the year.

I tried Strategy 1 first time round. Never got around to changing drivers on through the season. Switched to strategy 2 and last season - jackpot!
This years is going to be real tough with the strategy 2. Even then I feel its going to be close.

Think I will go for four drivers too at the beginning, but with five million less to spend than you lot on strat two. Will be a tough start, hopefully some smaller teams have good packages this year so I can chop and change to make up for my budget deficit.

Wait, you're not Pauldy Son? Mind = blown.

Thanks for setting it up though, pauldy.

I've joined. Never tried one of these before, so just gone for the pick your drivers option and hope for the best.

Joined....wont make the mistake of choosing the strategy 1 again.

Its weird. Pauldy Son makes a lot less sense than Paul Dyson. Yet most on here (including myself) read his name as Pauldy for eons until someone pointed out the obvious.

I did too. It shocked me!

I first thought it was "Pauly D, son" ... something to do with Geordie shore. I thought you were a massive thundercnut till I realised it was Pauldy son, which still wasn't great but was better. But today, my mind has been melted.

Now I picture you as a sensible middle aged fella who isn't very imaginative and just uses his real name with a number an world location in there.

That is spot on.

RON DENNIS BREAKS HIS SILENCE: “WE WILL WIN RACES THIS YEAR”

“We have to get back to competitiveness as soon as possible and we will get there much faster than people imagine, ” declared McLaren boss Ron Dennis this morning, breaking his silence for the first time since seizing back control of the company from Martin Whitmarsh.

“I believe we will win races this year, how many I don’t know and when I don’t know. Company was unfit and I said to them that if they match my commitment we will win. If they don’t match that they won’t be with the company.”

Dennis was on feisty form at press gathering at the McLaren Technical Centre in Woking, England, laying out his vision for the company and for the F1 team’s return to competitiveness after its worst season since 1980.

“The people were distracted, they had lost focus,” he said of the team as it was run by Whitmarsh last year. From now on “The F1 people in the company will only do F1, no distractions.”

He declined to speak about Whitmarsh’s future, describing him as a friend and insisting that what is going on at the moment is “between us”. However sources suggest that Whitmarsh is currently on holiday in Asia and will be sorting out his severance package when he returns later this month.

Dennis spelled out the role he will – and more importantly won’t – perform at races,
“I have no intention to run the GP team. I guide them advise them and will use my executive power to make changes if needed,” he said. “I’m fully involved at moment. Won’t be active at the circuit. I’m there to observe. We are in the restructuring phase at the moment and I want to be involved.”

Eric Boullier is the Racing Director and that means that “Eric will carry the responsibility of that are assigned in the regulations of a team principal.” But Dennis, like Mercedes, believes that the job is too big today for one man to run a team, when he is out of the factory on the road at races for almost four months a year. The CEO role is the key to his vision, factory based and focussed on developing the team and making the car faster, leaving Boullier to run the race team. Jonathan Neale is filling the role currently and will be the benchmark against whom all other candidates will be measured.

“The factory is where the power has to be. What makes the car faster happens here,” he said.

Dennis confirmed that the team will have no title sponsor at the first race of the season, but added, “One will feature in a few races after that. We are negotiating with several companies at the moment and I’m optimistic that it will happen sooner than later.” He added that they had turned away several companies offering a stop gap solution, preferring to pursue a long term partner to replace Vodafone.

On the drivers he said that hiring Kevin Magnussen was his decision, based on information from engineers. As for Jenson Button he described him as an “incredibly good human being, principled and has values. The way he conducts his life and his relationship with the team is right up there with the best drivers we have had here. He’s incredibly fit and intelligent, which will be important this year.

In a sign that Dennis’ presence in the F1 paddock may influence the direction the sport takes on several topics, he indicated both that he was not a fan of budget caps and also that he has “done his bit” for the collective good in the past and from now on will be focussed on what is best for McLaren, rather than the F1 teams as a whole.

I'd be happier to see McLaren do well if Dennis wasn't around. I just can't look past the fact that I think he's a massive prick.

Everyone seems to love the new Williams livery. I love the old Martini livieries and I do thing the modern F1 shape is very difficult to work with in terms of re-creating a classic livery. I don't think this is a particularly great livery, so much empty space and not particularly memorable, that being said its still one of the better liveries on the grid this year.

Would be great if Williams rebound.

I'd fecking love it if Massa finished ahead of both Ferrari drivers in the WDC this year.

Williams' problem is that they can't keep up in the development race because of the massive budgets some of the other teams have. Hopefully being a Mercedes customer will help them bridge that gap a little bit.
