The F1 Thread 2013 Season

Well it's getting more interesting reports today Vodafone to end sponsorship of F1 team McLaren at the end of this season.

Old news really, i think we were talking about it in 2012's thread.

I think Glaxosmithkline might step up become title sponsors rather than bringing anyone new in, that all depends on whether Perez is there for the long term...

Anyone up watching P1?

It's probably a terrible idea for me to have it on in the background as I'm pulling an all nighter to get a piece of work in for tomorrow.

Whats worse is that I have work at 8am as well. :wenger:

Glad the first race is just around the corner. We can finally see what each car is capable of without the mind games being played among the team.

Finally found a channel broadcasting this. 15 minutes left.

Super soft tyres look bad, they were gone after 10 laps.

McLaren look a bit off the pace.

Need to get the pull rod suspension sorted out, way off pace at the moment but I think they will find a solution for it.

Not even 10 laps, the guy from Pirelli says 8 or 9 laps then with a 3-4 second drop off.
I dont think they will come in to it, looks like qualifying may well be wet and there is a chance the race will be wet.

Are teams required to uses both during races like last year?

Well 5 hours on, caught a bit of P2, finished my assignment to a terrible standard and now it's off to work for 9 hours. Joy

After that it's straight to town to see Led Zep and Rolling Stones tribute bands. It will then be 36 hours between sleeps. Hard!

The Hamilton factor.

Like Alonso or Schumacher in his prime, he makes a team better just by being there to drive for them.

Or perhaps they are the man city of F1. They have thrown millions and millions into poaching the best minds from F1, and obviously 1 of the best drivers.

It would be ludicrous if they were not challenging this year.

Anyone like understeer?

The McLaren looks absolutely shocking, hes grabbing armfuls of turn in and the thing is still understeering wide.

The McLaren is fecking shite apparently, both drivers unhappy with it and calling it 'uncontrollable and unpredictable'

Long first weekend ahead then :(

To be honest this is precisely the kind of thing that pissed Hamilton off at McLaren. They had a cracking car, they could have built upon it but instead they plump for new design concept which they don't 'fully understand' yet. I'm sure they'll figure it out but it might be too late by then. You'd think with their resources they'd do better in understanding a design concept.

McLaren will do their usual of starting poor and then by the time its too late turn it around and win a few consolation races.

McLaren's record is really poor for a top team. Since Senna left they've won only 3 titles. Would've been 2 had Ferrari not been retards in 08.

In the same time Williams and Ferrari have won more. Renault in a couple of guises have won more. Red Bull have won the same amount as them and will probably make it 4 this season. It really isn't good enough for a team like McLaren.

Mclaren said they couldn't develop the 2012 car any further so had to make some drastic changes for 2013. They will struggle for a couple of races but I am certain they can turn it into a stable car, long season ahead so I wouldn't rule them out yet.

The resources and the results aren't matching up for me. The car they came up with in 09 was horrific until they copied other teams designs, they were actually shocked with how good the upgrade was at the Nurburgring. Then even last year (or was it the one before) they struggled until they hashed a copy of the Red Bull diffuser for Melbourne. They've been up a lot of blind paths in recent years.

I haven't ruled them out at all, they will turn it around. However they could be out of it by then. The percentages don't add up for me.

Just seems like an odd thing to do when you ended the season with one of the fastest cars, ditch it for a new concept. All well and good saying you reached the end of its development but if your car takes until mid-season to fix it then its too late and why start a new concept now when its back to square one for 2014 anyway?

Oh good, McLaren have produced a midfielder.

Wow. The amount of lift he's doing in some typical flat out corners is shocking for a car which was the fastest in the last race of last season!

Typical McLaren

No, this is pushing it even for McLaren. Weren't even any big technical regulation changes ffs.

does anyone know the numbers? I bet mercedes are nothing like city/chelsea. Surely ferrari/redbull/mclaren have been pumping in silly money without really breaking even.
