The F1 Thread 2013 Season

How many drivers are being investigated for using DRS under yellow flags? Should have handed out the penalties during the race as this might effect the podium places.

What is the expected punishment for using DRS under a safety car, it is normally a drive through penalty isn't it during the race

I am guessing 'cause he ran into Verne I think and he damaged his front wing in the process.
Thanks for that.

Rumours flying around that Webber might have signed a deal to drive for Porsche for the next five years in Le Mans.

Those are the 24hr races aren't they? He would never have to pit after all the tyre management practice he is getting at the moment

Jacques tells it like it is, modern F1 sucks!

Was it any better in his time? Processional races with tracks where it was impossible to overtake.

Rose tinted glasses. 2001-2004 saw some of the worst races in modern times.

Agreed, you could pretty much tell the finishing positions of the race after the qualifying session.

The current formula needs tweaking, but its a hell of a lot better than the stuff 10 years ago.

The V10 engines circa 2000-04 were awesome but I've got to admit some of the racing wasn't very exciting. 2004 in particular I remember being boring. I think Schumacher won something like 12-13 races. Last season was one of the best seasons I can remember, we had 7 different winners and was generally pretty engaging.

The Schumacher domination era was boring, but the years before it were superb. Watching a superior driver (Schumacher) battling better cars from 96-00 (not 99 due to the leg break) was great. I don't remember from before 95 ( I missed the Senna-Prost years)

Pirelli have ditched the soft tyre for Bahrain, using medium and hard instead.

Im not suprised, getting 4-5 laps out of a tyre maximum is just ridiculous.

Think that is a good move. Hopefully in qualifying the drivers will actually try now. Personally I don't see why Pirelli have fiddled with the tyre, i though last season they were fine, though admittedly teams were doing fewer stops.

My prediction for Bahrain is another Alonso win.

Only saw the race yesterday, but those last few laps by Vettel were class. If only the rest of the race could be like that. Amazing driving, and he could have passed Hamilton if he didn't mess up that corner.

Renault looked strong in Bahrain last year so I reckon Kimi might have a chance of getting another win. Mercedes and RBR will probably benefit the most from the new compound so I am expecting Vettel and Lewis to have a good race on Sunday.

The thing is that short stint he made showed the potential of the cars if they had the ability to push on the tyre, he went 3 seconds a lap faster than anyone simply because he wasn't nursing them. Even so they last what 4 laps at that speed before he started to lose them? Pathetic.

Mercedes were definitely harder on the tyre than Lotus and Ferrari. Will be interesting to see how fair on the mediums and hards. I imagine they'll do better as Lewis really struggled to hold on in the closing stages of China.

It looks like this might be a classic season. Ferrari look really strong and up for the Red Bull challenge. I think it'll be a classic battle between Vettel & Alonso. Meanwhile Hamilton, even though he's a complete knob head, is doing miracles at Mercedes. I'm convinced he's the greatest f1 driver around and he could yet put spanner in the works despite being in the inferior car.

Greatest would be a bit too far. He is certainly very talented and good as well. If he can have as good season as alonso had last time then he will certainly raise his profile.

Alonso is a better driver than Hamilton IMO. For me currently the best drivers are Alonso, Hamilton and then Vettel. In that order.

Alonso is an absolute genius with the ability to get the absolute maximum out of the car. Lewis has improved his consistency a great deal in the last season or so. He is getting closer and closer to Alonso's level.

Hamilton is the fourth best driver on the grid, but some way behind Alonso, Raikonnen and Vettel, in my opinion. He's comfortably better than fifth (Webber) however.

Hamilton is a great driver no doubt. But I'd put him behind Alonso definitely and probably Vettel and Raikkonen. Consistency seems to be his main issue. Plus by his own admission McLaren had the fastest car on the grid towards the end of last season, he really should have made a better fist of the things a la Alonso had he have been the best driver.

Um...it wasn't so long ago that F1 fans were seriously discussing whether Vettel could actually pass opponents, let alone whether he was as good as Hamilton & Alonso.

Hamilton's never really fulfilled the potential he showed in his first couple of seasons. A lot of people had him down as a multiple World Champion by this stage back when he broke through.

I thought Hamilton drove pretty well last season but was let down by bad reliability and some Mclaren feckups.

I forgot to mention Kimi. I think he's up there with Alonso. Very little in it.

I'd agree with this. He was incredible last year, almost beating the Red Bull is that Ferrari.

After that I think Lewis is the next best driver on the grid.

Hamilton was exceptional last season, pretty much faultless unlike his team and car. The one season he has underwhelmed is 2011 and even then its not like we are talking about his pace, he just stumbled over Massa too often and got mentally beaten by a dominant Red Bull.

Fact is and I think Damon Hill said as much on one of the broadcasts this year, since Hamilton entered the sport all the factors that made him so strong have actually been gradually taken away from him. Excellent overtaking ability nulified by DRS allowing everyone to make easy moves, Re-Fueling which requires a certain ability to manage a race, Tyre Durability which has taken away a drivers ability to push maximum attack across a whole stint.

Hamilton's elite class, the evidence is plain to see.

I would say Lewis and Alonso are the most valuable racers in F1, If the teams started from scratch again the first two targets for every team principle would those two.
