The F1 Thread 2012 Season

Hamilton posted a picture of telemetry data to "prove" Button had a better set up than he did. His employer told him to remove them immediately, but not before other crews saw the tweet and copied it. IMO you would have to be a stone cold idiot to do that. Many employers would fire him on the spot for transmitting sensitive confidential information.

That's all they kept asking him at the press conference today. Unless they have some major plans for improvement it would be a big step backwards

Why would he want to go to Mercedes, they don't have a car that is capable of winning even with Lewis sat in it.
While I think is will go to another team, I don't think it will be Mercedes.

Of the teams which have a potential free drive, Mercedes looks to be the best competitively when the new engines come in 2014. That's why he's looking at Mercedes.

well it is going to have to be a massive improvement on what they have now, but even then I still dont see Mercedes being better than Red Bull or McLaren.
Time will tell but I dont expect Lewis to be a McLean driver next season.

He says its not about money but I really think its part of it, Ron Dennis mentioned while back they were looking for him to take a pay cut. Hamilton is probably looking around at other drivers deals and performances and thinking "hang on, why exactly am I taking a pay cut here?"

You could also say 2014 is a fresh start and having an engine manufacturer backer is a huge plus, just because Mercedes aren't competitive right now doesn't mean they can't be. If there is one tech director I trust its Ross Brawn and having Hamilton onboard for multiple years probably commits Mercedes to winning, they could really surge if they effectively use 2013 as a stepping stone.

Right now McLaren already have a WDC driver locked up long term and have yet to confirm their engine supply, something of which they might have to pay for for the first time in donkeys years.

Just watching Sky's FP coverage and Whitmarsh doesn't exactly sound confident of keeping his man.

Well he was giving it the old "we don't want anyone who doesn't really want to be here" schtick, I couldn't decide whether he was just resigned to losing him or fed up with the whole circus surrounding him.

Neither would be surprising.

As an aside; I really want to go back to Monza.

From Ross Brawn's quotes I think its pretty clear they are in for Hamilton, I suspect they are willing to pay him too and it all just comes down to if McLaren are prepared to match them and the performance of the two teams long term.

I don't see great vibes out of McLaren or Hamilton already this weekend.

Alonso gear box issue, could be a +5 grid penalty if they need to change that.

Whitmarsh: "Ultimately a driver has to drive where he is happy to drive, so the team and I don't want anyone who is not 100 per cent committed to it. You can't work like that. I've made that clear from the outset."

He added: "Lots of very positive things have been said to me, but then again, I've learned over the years that until people support that by inking the paper then you don't get too excited about it."

McLaren calm about Lewis Hamilton-to-Mercedes speculation:

Vettel's battery died in P3, whether it's his alternator again or not they don't know yet but he'll be happy it didn't wait till tomorrow to play up

Monza is not on the BBC? fecking cnut it anyway now I have to put up with those sky sports wankers.

The practice sessions are pretty good on Sky, everyone seems a lot more relaxed. Unfortunately they haven't got it right for the qualifying and race days yet and going by the years of their stuffy football studios before games I don't know if they ever will get it right

The build up on sky sports is woeful, sadly I love F1 too much not to watch it just to pick up the team news but the presentation team make me want to borderline self harm.

Webber on Lewis, "he is big and ugly enough to make those decisions himself"

It looked like expensive cheese and crackers in that F1 Paddock Club. I too want in.

I think

1) Button
2) Hamilton
3) Alonso

I would love for these bottom 3 teams to feck off and see the likes of toyota, honda to return or even a BMW team to be setup. Wont happen though, ever.
