The F1 Thread 2011 Season

Brundle is very knowledgeable, as is DC sat alongside him, and the comments on the use of soft tyres were bang on.

With regards fuel, there have been times this season where it's seemed that someone has had to preserve fuel because they've been more aggressive in the earlier stages than was planned for and burned off more than expected.

Were they now? I guarantee that Schumacher, Rosberg and Alonso will have brand spanking new softs or lightly used 'scrubbed' softs to pick from. DC said nothing about soft tyres, it was Brundle banging on about it.

Of course what would I know, its not as if the regulations that every person can read states that they're given 4 sets of softs and have to give one back after friday....

Want to see that lap from Alonso, sure it's a second slower than the Red Bulls but after what the Ferraris were looking like in Q1 and Q2, that's one hell of a lap he's put in there.

Yep that was a great lap from Nando. Did very very well to split the Mclarens!

He's better then Rubens but not by much. Solid drivers but never going to be champions. They lack the killer instinct.

Well Massa would have been champ if not for Timo Glock moving over for his buddy to win the Championship

Great to see Webber get pole...should be a great race tomorrow.

Marching I'm not talking to you, and never will unless you get me Seb's autograph when you're in Monaco :p

Ferrari on Twitter: "A great lap for Fernando, this fourth place is totally unexpected."

You know Ferrari must be really really off the pace if "4th place is totally unexpected"

He'd have been champ if it weren't for the catalog of errors that Ferrari and he made throughout the course of that season.

The 2008 Ferrari was such a waste. Brilliant car.

I'll try and flag him down ;)

he was cheering on the radio when he got 4th, things not good at ferrari at all at the moment

I thought Ferrari were suppose to get in some new parts to push them up the grid? Has it happened or not yet?

I think it has. Ferrari are now on par with Mclaren. Also other teams have gotten new parts too. However the gap to Red Bull is just too big to close in one race.

You probably couldn't have much of a better position to get some great photos from. The best pictures I got from Monza were on the exit of Ascari, you'll have a good view of them approaching and slowing for the corner, I expect some high quality pictures on your return!

The problem is that by the time you reduce the gap to RB the season is almost over.

Not necessarily.

The gap to the Red Bulls is massive in qualifying as we've seen this season. But we have also seen that Mclaren and Ferrari aren't too far back in terms of race pace. They've managed to keep Red Bull honest in most of the races thus far. With qualifying less significant than ever before it still can be a good season.

wonder how the ferraris will do tomorrow because they used that extra set of options in Q1, JB has a spare set over alonso, could make all the difference

Generally Ferrari are better in race trim but then so are McLaren. If its a clean race then I would expect both McLarens to finish ahead of Alonso but well down on the Red Bulls.

I hope the seasons sake Webber actually pulls his finger out and beats Vettel by hook or by crook. If Vettel starts with no KERS (they will probably fix it parc ferme) then he will sink like a stone down into T1.

Everyone talks about the fact that Ferrari don't have any fresh options left; they don't of course, I'm not denying that! But granted the sets have all done an out lap, flyer and in lap - that's only three laps with one of them at full pelt. Therefore to make this up to the other cars, they need to make their hard tyres last only 2/3 laps longer to redress the balance, and the F150 Ferrari is widely regarded as one of the easiest, if not the outright easiest, on their tyres. So yes, the other teams will start will an advantage, but in my opinion, it is a very slender one.

Take into account Alonso's racecraft (in my opinion equal best with Hamilton on the grid) and knowledge of when to push and when to conserve and I don't think it's much of a problem. On the other hand, I think it's little things like this that highlight the difference between Alonso and Massa and why their performance is often so different.

I don't want to turn this post into a mini-rant at Massa because he is quite clearly an excellent driver, who after everything he has experienced, I have the utmost respect for, and he always comes across extremely well in interview as very humble and gracious. But unfortunately, perhaps this is where Massa lacks that absolute 100% driven self-mindedness in order to take himself to the next level - look at Schumacher, Alonso, Hakkinen, Hamilton (admittedly to a lesser extent, Button), recent world champions who all divided opinion much more and yet were clearly the best in their particular seasons/eras. Just saying - I do feel for Felipe, I just don't think it's in his nature to be quite as selfish.
