The F1 Thread 2011 Season

Ferrari seriously aren't that far off on race pace, don't write them off. If they can sort themselves out in quali, I'm sure we'll seem them much nearer the front soon.

That said, Vettel and Red Bull do look imperious. Then throw McLaren in up there and the rest of the season looks amazingly well set-up.

I have to agree but hate to think of the season with him running away with it , it will become boring
I think that is what it'll be. He'll probably run away with it till around halfway through the season before the others make a belated charge for the title.

I can just imagine Hamilton joining Red Bull or Ferrari and then McLaren building a rocketship

Didn't he just recently say that he would move to Red Bull and he could race alongside Vettel?

I'd love it if he left though and Alonso moved back to McLaren so I can get back to loving McLaren and hating Ferrari.

Hamilton was already slow which caused Alonso to close in easily.

Seems he probably couldn't keep his tyres.

You have some kind of weird/retarded imagination. The HRTs will win a championship before Mclaren take Alonso back after what transpired in 07. Hamilton or no Hamilton.

China in a week then, I can tell you next weeks winner if you like

Vettel

Hamilton has always had that problem with tyres , he does not seem to be able to look after them and with these new compounds he is doing no better.

Don't let the commentators fool you, he really isn't that bad with them.

I know :(

But one can hope. The ideal scenario though would be Kimi returning to take McLaren to a Championship win

stupid Alonso screw himself up with a poor move on Hamilton.....

Lewis Hamilton is demoted to eighth after he received a 20-sec penalty for defending his position against Fernando Alonso. Alonso also gets a 20 sec pen but did not lose sixth place

They actually penalised Hamilton for defending his position? Wow I don't understand racing sometimes.

Appears they penalised him for the previous lap and moving on the straight. Not much consistency considering Vettel was all over the shop down into Turn 1 at the start.

I only saw the first half hour or so then had to listen to the rest on the radio in the car, so I've not seen the Hamilton incident. It sounded on the radio like Alonso just screwed up and misjudged his move when trying to slipstream him so the penalty seems strange. Will have to try and see it later.

Good result though, Vettel looking fantastic so far.

Just seen the Alonso and Hamilton collision, I've no idea how they've come to penalise them both for that, very odd.

From the report I read on BBC it seems it was for making more than one defensive move in the run up to the collision, rather than the collision itself, and Hamilton to his credit seems to have accepted it and taken it on the chin. I didn't notice any multiple changes of direction on the clip I saw though, seems harsh.

Rather misleading headline, unsurprisingly he's not exactly come out and said it's all the teams fault, he's just told the story of the race and how the strategy didn't work out.

I give the fact he moved across the track slightly, but he certainly didn't weave. Looked like he took the normal racing line and Alonso just fecked up.

What a crock of shit from the FIA

What a crock of shit from the FIA

Agreed, if they're going to penalise Hamilton for that then they could have given quite a lot more drivers, including the race winner, that penalty.

It was a dull race in the end, pretty much a simple job for Vettel. China is going to be interesting given RBR's KERs issues, McLaren or maybe even Renault could be pushing it.

Renault do look to have a solid car this year, it'll be interesting to see how aggressive they are developing it. If they are aggressive then it'll put the cat amongst the pigeons for sure.

I've not seen the post race interview or read any reports yet but just read this on twitter - Coulthard: "It seems a fair assumption that Fernando only reported Lewis's weaving since he was already in trouble himself.."

I didn't know it was Ferrari and Alonso that went running to the FIA but it doesn't surprise me.

Do as Fernando says not as he does. This is the same fella that brake tested a driver in free practice because he didn't jump out of his way for him. What Hamilton did wasn't a penalty, what Alonso did wasn't a penalty. FIA just can't help but dabble at times.

I can't believe how well Hamilton has taken the penalty, I'd be fecking livid. Absolutely nonsense decision. I think Vettel was a little lucky getting away with his double move weaving ala Schumacher at the start of the race. I actually think Alonso was a little hard done by too, I'd say it was just a racing incident. But the man is a giant, giant cock so it's hard to be too bothered

Formula One driver Nick Heidfeld has written an open letter to Robert Kubica wishing him a speedy recovery from the injuries that gave the German his position this season.

Kubica was replaced by Heidfeld on the Renault team after suffering multiple injuries during a rally crash in February. He also dedicated his third-place finish at the Malaysian Grand Prix to the Polish driver.

"I printed your logo on the front of my helmet, and the Polish flag on the side. I wanted you to see that and to let you know that I'm thinking of you," Heidfeld said on his personal website. "I wanted to show your fans that you are a part of Formula 1 and of this team. This 3rd place is also yours!"

Kubica underwent seven hours of surgery to save his right hand before operations on his shoulder and leg, and later on his elbow.

"During the race I had often been thinking of you. Crossing the finish line, happiness totally flooded my head," Heidfeld said. "I know what you are thinking right now: 'Lotus-Renault has built such a wonderful car this year. I want to get back as soon as possible and drive it!' You can do it. I wish you all the best for your rehabilitation."

Heidfeld, who was enlisted by Renault on short notice, has 13 career podiums but remains winless.

Defending F1 champion Sebastian Vettel of Germany has won the opening two races this season.

Class.

I've always rated Heidfeld, I think that podium record speaks for itself given he's rarely had a particularly competitive car. Was odd for me he didn't have a drive this season when you see some of the dross in the field, and odd he's had difficulty at times in the past. He seems a really nice fella too

He's always been good but he just isn't top line, hes more or less the perfect Number 2 driver though.

Thats the second misleading Hamilton story on this page now the guardian must really hate the guy.

Hm, he doesn't quite say what the headline suggests but he does seem to be making it pretty clear that he won't hesitate to move elsewhere if McLaren aren't remaining competitive. Not that there's anything wrong with that, like Leg-End says. He's a racer and he's not there to make up the numbers, all the guys out there want to win and if they're not getting the chance to do that at their current team they will listen to offers from teams better placed. It's par for the course really.

Vettel has been fastest in practice again, ahead of Webber and then both McLarens, Lewis and Jenson have both commented that the Red Bull is very quick at this circuit; could be another whitewash.

Just caught up with practice Vettel killing it right now only a his car having some sort of failure will stop him.

hehehe

The Australian Mark Webber reacted angrily when asked if he was fed up with being hit over the head with a baseball bat by Vettel, his Red Bull team-mate. The questioner was referring to Eddie Irvine's famous response when asked what it felt like to be so dominated by his then Ferrari team-mate, Michael Schumacher. Irvine said it was "like being hit over the head with a baseball bat".

Webber was furious: "Absolutely fecking ludicrous question mate. You've known me long enough. Five wins in a row? Yeah but that doesn't mean ... he's not just beaten me. He's beaten everyone. So no one will turn up then. We may as well all stay at home.

"That's what a competitor does [come back fighting]. Nothing lasts forever. That's the way it goes. Like I said he is doing a good job and Malaysia was close between us. Tough first lap [for me] but that's what happens. Come here, see how we go ... I think ... I'll stop there."

Yeh, but unlike everyone else Mark, you've got the same car mate!

Or have you...
