The F1 Thread 2011 Season

right then i slept through my alarm this morning so i have avoided this thread and all F1 news until the re run at 1. vettel was impressive for sure, should be a great start tomorrow methinks. i liked his reply in the interview at the end ;

"Did you use kers on that lap?"

"No"

"Why not?"

"Well i couldnt find the button"

Im sure schumacher will not be happy with 11th, shocked that barichello had that little slip up, Di Resta did well for his first grand prix quali and Massa had a nightmare, ferrari looked to be struggling big time!

Tomorrow will be interesting, Vettel's lap was stunningly quick however we saw that a lot last year. The race pace is what im most interested in this Red Bull and what its like on tyres over multiple laps, just not one shot hot laps.

BTW HRT appealed to the FIA to overlook the 107% rule but the FIA have rejected it. Sadly that team is a bit of a joke.

Not sure what they want to achieve really, a joke of an outfit. You have been in F1 for a year now and you still can't get a car out there for the practice sessions? Not good enough.

How did they even get into F1 with so many new teams like Prodrive in the waiting. I do agree with Eddie Jordan these new teams need to time years to get ready but HRT cant even get there car ready in time.

They should have never have chosen HRT over Prodrive if that was the case, Dave Richards would have done a proper job of it and if I recally rightly perhaps would have been running McLaren components where possible. Now we are stuck with a team that won't qualify for events and has one pay driver who quite frankly isn't an F1 standard driver anymore.

The new teams like Virgin and HRT got in with the understanding that they could get customer cars if they promised to a spending cap. Hence they probably felt they didn't need years of planning. However the goal posts moved and the customer cars idea was overturned. Its just not possible to build your own chassis and do it effectively on a budget of 40 million.

Virgin have actually done decently. I guess HRT just don't have the funds.

I don't know what the story with Prodrive was. They could easily have been all about blowing a lot of hot air like USF1. However they did probably have a stronger case than HRT.

This is off topic I don't know what Dean Richards has done to piss of Bernie but it isnt right. Prodrive have entered other Motorsport events done very well also with a great F1 former team principal in Richards with the Mercedes engines and the funding yet not a look in.

Anyone seen the D'Agostini advert? Build your own 2008 McClaren. First issue comes at the bargain price of £1.99! Why wouldn't you want too?

Well, because the usual cost of the magazine is £7.99, and there are 85 issues in total to complete your parts collection, meaning by the end, you'll have forked out £673.15. For a fecking model of a car. Does anyone actually do this?!

All this said, I've wanted a model of Hill's winning Williams Renault for years

I got a model of the Senna McLaren MP4/4 a few years ago but yeah I that ad the other day crazy.

Thought he did great and so did DC.

Vettel stunning pace, Webber already looking unhappy after 1 qualifying session! Did you notice him checking Seb's front wing after quali, wonder if he is missing a part again.

Speaking of which

The advantage that gives really is where alot of the difference is in the mid to high speed corners I think. Until McLaren find a way to do it to that extreme and Ferrari sort their 1 lap pace out nobody will get near them. But still I also believe Red Bull have some kind of advantage in qualifying sessions and usually they are abit closer in the race.

I dread to think how fast they will be at the high speed tracks, starting with Sepang.

McLaren are actually getting better with that:

Most definatly they are but Red Bull still have that thing nearly scraping the floor. I'm very optimistic for McLaren now they seem to have finally gotten a decent base to work from, it has a lot of room for improvement.

Yup, certainly isn't a lemon, just had a dodgy exhaust. Or perhaps unrefined, they could yet get it working I suppose.

Race pace will be interesting though, from what I remember it was the quali pace which was supposedly poorer for the Macs in testing, with the long runs being okay. There's a rumour about that Red Bull's KERS might not be multiple use, so there's the potential to catch up on a few tenths a lap during a race there. Assuming it doesn't break down again of course.

Its not so crazy when you realise the only other 1/8 scale mclaren available comes in at a measly £2750

On a side note, thought we were getting hd coverage this year? Just been on the sky epg and the programme listing for the race is white not orange, anybody know if this is just a mistake?

Well there's a reason Seb didn't use the KERS.

It seems Newey may have outwitted everyone again with some sort of "smart" KERS. Basically a type of launch control.

Red Bull are thought to have a mini-Kers system they use only at the race start.

This allows them to defend their position at the start without some of the disadvantages of a full Kers system.

A fully optimised Kers system provides an average performance boost of 0.3 seconds a lap by harvesting energy that would have been wasted during braking, storing it in batteries and then reapplying it during acceleration.

But the system's power is limited by the regulations and the heavy batteries and other parts create packaging and weight distribution problems.

Equally, as the system relies on the rear wheels to provide its charge, another advantage is that it can increase tyre wear in races because it unsettles the handling of the car.

Some teams believe a car can be made to perform faster without it.

I understand - and rivals believe - that Red Bull have built a Kers system with a smaller battery which is charged before the face and discharged only once at the start and not used again.

The system would still need a fairly large battery to deliver the high current needed but weight could be saved because the parts needed to charge the battery during the race would not be required.

BBC Sport - F1 - Have Red Bull outwitted F1 rivals again with mini Kers system?

Well, it's a limited system, rather than a smart one. Then again, they don't seem to like things that are designed to boost top speed since their benefit compared to other teams' is small, so it is smart that they came up with a system that didn't impinge on the rest of the car whilst still providing something (the launch).

Still, Hamilton should be able to take another 3 tenths ish per lap if his system works. The race really only has one winner though, assuming no reliability failures.

The UK coverage is in HD on BBC. Though I don't know if it was only certain cameras, my TV isn't the greatest, bit on the small side. Some of the overhead shots were stunning though

I've just been on the bbc f1 website anf they have it being in hd so its probanle sky have got it wrong on their epg, looking forward to it, hoping for a mclaren 1-2 :D

Vettel to walk it this year imo and start another period where a german dominates the sport.

Hopefully I'm wrong and Ferrari or McLaren (Hamilton) do something

As long as Red Bull keep Newey and his team together they will always be there or there abouts until the big rule changes in 2013 by which point anything can happen. It's only logical to think Vettel will be the strong favorite as long with no disrespect to Webber he is the clear number 1 there.

It's difficult for non-manufacturer teams in the long run though and hard to sustain dominance in this sport nowdays with constant developments and rule changes. But if I had to bet on someone for this season its Vettel by some distance.

I woke up an hour for the race - great

Vettel to win, love to see Schumacher on the podium but that is wishful thinking

Right I'm up :D

I see jordan still wearing those crappy fecking horrid shirts. Button to win!!:D
