The F1 Thread 2008 Season

yep it sounds fair as long as other drivers are getting similar punishments.should be a learning process for hamilton as its easy to forget its only his second season in F1.

To be fair, there was no point in punishing Schumy.... He'd just make a comeback and win the thing.

No doubt Hamilton will learn from it. Very costly error on his part. He looked a banker to win that race so in effect he has lost points from that and he will now possibly loose out on some here.

I don't want to sound like a cnut or something, but why is Lewis dad always with him? Is he working for McLaren?

No, he has just been with him at all his races throughout his career and helped him get to the position he is in. Wants to be involved... you know the supportive father.

Yeah, but Lewis is a grown up man... you know, is he the father that wants exposure and fame now?

I never got that impression he has just been there throughout the whole process he does not seem to actively seek out attention. He is still his manager though by the way, which is something Mclaren is not happy about.

Alonso poor start. But made a place up and looks racy.

Hamilton also looks good maybe took slightly of an advantage for one overtake.

He's now under investigation for it.

Commentators seem to think he'll get a 10 sec penalty.

Massa wins and Kimi nurses the car home in second - would have won otherwise.

Trulli manages to keep third place - good race from him.

Alonso got pipped at the end by his team-mate. Hamilton doesn't score any points at all.

The talking point will be the penalty handed out to Hamilton no doubt. I think it was fair though as he wouldn't have been going into the chicane like that if it was a tyre wall or gravel and the fact that he kept the place because it was extended tarmac. It was a tight call though.

Harsh penalty for Hamilton for me, usually there's an instant call to the race controlled to see if the place needs to be rescinded, wonder what happened there?

I tell you one thing, they never came down so hard and so often on Ferrari back in the Scumacher days, as they are on McClaren at the moment

The bitterness!

Why do you hate Schumi so much?

That is true. Maybe its a carry on for what happened last year with McLaren...

However, consistency is better now though and we see it more often through the field. I understand one official steward goes to all the race tracks in recent seasons whilst before it was up to the stewards from that particular race track.

how was the drive through harsh

he went off the track , gained a position ..

great race .. Ferrari 1-2

Because he was a cheat and a disgrace to the sport

I'm bitter yes, but lets not pretend he didn't used to have the rules bent completely in his favour. Used to be a disgrace

He took the position on track, then failed to slow down for the chicane. Hamilton could have slowed down in time, he made a mistake and overcooked it. But the place was already taken, and I don't think Vettal would have had a chance at coming back at him. Mistake, but drivers shouldn't be recieving 10 second penalties for mistakes

Think it's a McClaren fan boy conspiracy? Would someone like to explain to me why Kovalainen was handed a 5 place penalty? That dicision was even worse than Hamiltons, an utter farce. Webber wasn't affected, and Nakajima was involved too and took no punishment

its hamiltons job to get the overtaking right ..
if he is late on the brakes and is unable to stay on the track then it cant be allowed ..
had hamilton realised he couldnt overtake and slow down in time , Vettal might have stayed in the lead

a position was gained ..

it wasnt a 10 sec pen , it was a drive through .
still he ended up losing more time than he would have had he not tried the move , but thats the minimum .. and as a position was gained , he had to be punished ..
had he slowed down and let vettal regain the spot , he wouldt have had the drive through ..

it has happened before ..
monaco a few years back , MS couldnt brake in time , went off the track , slowed down and let the other drive regain the spot

Ron Dennis' interview was as good as ever in the end it was like a make of it what you will. I used to believe him until he blatantly lied throughout the whole saga last year, protesting his innocence.

Last year it was Alonso making mistakes in qualifying whilst Hamilton was putting in flawless performances and thus getting the results. Now its Hamilton making the odd mistake - he made a mistake in the final session of qualifying too. At least Hamilton he is fresh from all this now for the next race. He needs to put his head down and get some composure back.

That 10 point gap needs to start being reduced as the Ferraris do look reliable - even if they did limp one of them home today.

I think the penalty was deserved, on reflection. He only kept the place by driving off the road and straight lining the chicane - thus clearly gaining an advantage. He would not have gained the position had he been going slowly enough to get around the corner. He didn't hand it back and so forced the stewards to make a decision. Minimal penalty, just about right. Not the most cut and dried example of that kind of thing, but the camera angles didn't help the viewers at home.

He was nowhere anyway, totally ragged, locked up all over the show and hit the back of the other McLaren. Poor weekend from Lewis, he's due a proper drive at Silverstone. Did they say that he's been giving out about his recent press coverage?

Bit of a crap GP up the front, but some racy encounters down the field.

Ron is not to be trusted.

The commentators did say something of the sort - about him being moody and not happy with the press coverage he has been getting.

His home grand prix has come at the perfect time I reckon.

They have allways came down hard on people that cut chicanes to gain a place....if you cut the chicane and gain a place for it, you let the driver back through or your getting a drive through.

Was the case in schumachers day and all.

Just seems that when Lewis has his mind on driving he can't take in anything else

Yes that is why the FIA decided to change the rules at the end of 2004 to stop Ferrari and Schumacher from dominating, resulting in a catastrophic 2005 season for the Ferrari team because they didn't have the right tyres for a race where tyre changes weren't allowed.

Probably the reason they disqualified Schumacher in 1997, while Senna crashed into Prost in 1990 and didn't get any penalty at all and became world champion.

Yeah you could say the FIA really are Schumi fans and have always supported him. :wenger:

I really don't understand why some people call Schumacher a disgrace to the sport, while Senna and others were just as bad.

Schumacher learned his Formula 1 tricks from Senna you know and he was unlucky to become a top driver in an age where the FIA were more concerned about safety. I believe that if the 1997 incident between Schumacher and Villeneuve had happened before 1994, Schumacher would not have been disqualified from the championship.

British GP will move to Donington

The British Grand Prix will move from Silverstone to Donington Park from 2010 as part of a new 10-year deal.

Well I liked Silverstone, it is a quality race track and great to see the cars flying through Becketts so that's shame but at least it stays in Britain.

Donington will have to go through some big improvements though won't it? Its an okay track but I never rated it amongst the great testing racing tracks. I guess we'll see.

What a qualifying session. I laughed when Webber crossed the line and Ferrari thought they had done it. Lo and behold... all hail Kovalainen. It's about time he performs.

Kovalainen with a great lap and gets pole but also what a lap by Webber, second place.

Hamilton made a mistake on his first run but recovered with a decent lap and got 4th place.

Poor show by Massa though - 9th. Ferrari looked out of it really until Raikkonen came out with a great lap at the end.

Still Webber!? Even if it is light fuel that is a fantastic lap. Coulthard just missed the cut so will start from 11th.

Like the commentators mentioned. Coulthard will be disappointed since he and Webber have the same car. People have been talking about the same thing with Kovalainen and Hamilton, but today the roles were reversed.

my hate for ferrari and liverpool is the same.

on second thought liverpool edges it...

I am pleased at least hamilton also didn't have a good qualifying session. :D
