It's been a fair while since NoPace was about, could easily drag out a bit.

Reckon I'll call it a night - the heat, the drama...I'm all worn out.

Lampard was a AM or a 10. His best position was that. You can compare him to Rooney as much to Scholes or Gerrard.

Scholes and Gerrard were their best as Box to box 8's during their early years. (Scholes' best years though arguably came as a 6 later on but he played the exact role with Keane/Butt, Gerrard played alongside Hamann and then later even Alonso for a period as Theon referred too.)
I don't think Lampard was necessarily a 10 or even an AM, his consistency of passing from deeper midfield areas was always more consistent than Gerrard, and he was decent defensively too, maybe he didn't really show any great positional nouse or discipline, but his work rate made him more of a box-to-box than an AM IMO.

I agree. I wouldn't call Lampard an AM or number 10 by any means, he played his best football with Makelele and Essien behind him. Though I do think that the difference between playing as a fully covered CM like Iniesta or Lampard and being a defensively good AM is minimal.

Cutch picks Lehmann, Annah picks Petit who played with Thuram for Monaco without winning and then winning it later in another league.

Consistency of Passing i am not sure about and he had to play pretty safe whenever he played deep as He never had the passing range or drive/Energy for defensive commitments of a Gerrard and the early Scholes. Also They both could run games impacting all areas in their own ways, Lampard couldn't from there.

I rate Lampard very highly, and his numbers speak for themselves but for me it was as a Goalscoring 10 where was at his best at and by a distance and thats where he played most of his career as well. He was a all round player, who was bit obstructive in general play at times in that role as he wasn't the most technical but his numbers and even his workrate as a 10 to make it a 3 man midfield compensated for it.

I think what people often miss with Pirlo is that he could in fact play in a 2 man midfield, even if it was stretching it and far from building a team around him.

Pirlo constantly racked up interception and tackling statistics like Michael Carrick did in 12-13 which many people consider one of his best seasons especially defensively.

Pirlo could play any role basically in midfield except AM where he was reduced, as long as you have enough runners around him. At Milan he played as the 8 too which people forget and in a 2 man midfield alongside Gattuso in a different dynamic where he went forward lot more than his Juve days as well.

I think we are disagreeing more on the terminology of what is the AM or 10 slot more than anything.

Lampard's best position was as you say with 2 players clearly behind him and the Striker ahead. He could drop deep to make a 3 in midfield when defending and initally in attack and then had the fitness levels and cleverness to get into goalscoring positions in the attacks.

Agree with both parts, just terminology.

Petit is a very nice pick at this stage. Excellent combo with Thuram.

Cheers mate, I like the dynamics between Petit-Pirlo-Essien. Both Petit and Essien being defensive box to box midfielders with great tenacity, aggressiveness and tackling as well as being able to run all day.

Petit starting out his career in the defensive line as a RB or a CB with Thuram and Essien being capable of playing as a right back as well. Will be comfortable defending out wide when needed.

If you get a solid CB, productive right winger of any kind and a keeper with arms and legs you'll get votes for winning games 1-0 or 2-1 with this lineup, for sure:

-----------Ronaldo------
Ribery--------------SomeGuyWithPace
------Essien------Petit----
------------Pirlo-----------
Lizarazu-Cannavaro-CB-Thuram
--------ManWithArms----

That should be interesting and definitely get the best out of Pirlo. Lacks goals/direct assists somewhat though. Bit on the defensive side.

Typo from me, Essien is of course the one who played RB and Petit played as a LB/CB in Monaco.

Yeah, but if previous drafts are any indication, people think Fat Ronaldo is a guaranteed hat-trick against Baresi and a Minotaur, so he should be fine.

But yeah, if he plays Thuram at RB and has those defenders, it's asking a ton of Ribery and Ronaldo. He really needs to find a star RW.

Ribery provides loads of creativity from out wide, he had 14 assists in 24 games season before last. He is always all over the place rather than stuck out wide even though he is a direct goal threat as well with his dribbling and shot, with 10 goals in those 24 matches as well.
