They could send out a strong sign by taking it down with 10 minutes to go if our team isn't putting up at least a fight or players similarly bad as in the first game.

That would appear as knee-jerk, just take it off at the beginning and have him earn the right to have it back on.

Considering that it is still up makes the "knee-jerk" point quite moot. It's not like we did it after the first bad game of the season.

I'm not saying your suggestion is knee-jerk, it'll just be perceived as such. "Oh look, they're bringing the banner down now that they're definitely crashing out of the UCL".

Nah, take it down before the game or not at all - no need to make a show of it when there's a game going on.

The revolt has started

Should just ask the scouse to borrow this:

I suppose it'll be interesting to have a poll here asking if the banner should come down.

RedIssue seems to unanimously want it down, and if twitter is anything to go by it seems theres a dozen or ticket ticketholders in ST2 who are going to trying to take it down this evening.

Moyes Derangement Syndrome is properly kicking in.

What an utter farce of a tragedy it would be if, in arguably our biggest game of the season to date, all the focus is on a group of supporters trying to tear down a banner by force, to no other end than making a symbolic point (a symbolic point which will only increase the sense of negativity, strife and meltdown around the club).

I don't agree with taking it down during the game, its needlessly dramatic and distracts us from what should be an exciting night of European football.

I think it should however be taken down prior to the game.

I agree. Do it after we lose.

I was here when the discussion was on. I didn't say I like that banner either when it was put up. But its their prerogative to put that banner up and they have said they are considering it taking down once they have decided among themselves. They have said, for now, their objective is towards the atmosphere in this CL match. So tbh, I don't get why they have been abused. and not here mind.

It was embarrassing when it first went up. Nobody deserves a banner simply for joining the club as it immediately devalued the homage paid by the others to others.

It should probably be discarded in steps.

One: Cover it with a "We stilll support David Moyes" banner. Wait for a game.
Two: Cover it with a "David Moyes" banner. Wait two more games.
Three: Cover the previous banner with a "We support our managers" banner. Wait two games.
Four: Replace it with Fred the Red, and never speak of it again.

I mean, ever.
Made me lol that did...

Posts 104 & 109 by Mockney are unfortuantely looking very propethtic now!!

The problem with the banner is it will look ridiculous if Moyes isn't a success. The sentiment's right, but those kind of things are always tempting fate.

Well the third way is to not make a banner for people until they've attained a certain level of iconicness. This is how most banners are made.

Or "The Current One".

Only hos to change and t to add.

Less work.

I've read some of the twitter to-ing and fro-ing between various people and SEF. It's all getting a bit silly watching grown men argue over a banner!

'The Erroneously Chosen One'

Though I would prefer to see it changed completely to

'Dump the Chump'

Totally agree. I laughed at Liverpool when their fans put up the Aquilani Gladiator banner before he had kicked a ball. And then we put up a banner for Moyes alongside Fergie, Busby, the Babes...If they wanted a cheap dig at Mourinho, they should have just put it up one time at the Chelsea game at the start of the season. We are now the only club where fans of our two main historic rivals have a banner dedicated to the same man.

It's tricky. I agree that it was a daft move to begin with. Nothing justifying it, but maybe it was just hopeful romanticism. Taking it down now, before the game, the only thing left to play for this season, would be pretty stupid. Maybe after the game if we're knocked out.

I'd be more interested in whether the fans will stay on after the final whistle if we're knocked out, applauding. If so, it won't be because the players deserve it. And it certainly won't be because Moyes deserves it. Granted, people will say "oh what class" bladdy bla, but it'll provide Moyes with further ornaments with which to decorate himself in his post-match "will do better next game" presser.

There is no shame in not applauding much repeated below-par performances. None whatsoever.

For me, as long as David Moyes remains manager of this football club, the banner should stay where it is. My fear is that taking it down will be an unmissable signal to the players (and our rivals) that the fans are no longer behind Moyes. If the players' own belief in him is already shaky, that could dent it even further. And if it's dented even further, that could negatively impact on performances and results. 'The fans are starting to f*ck him off, so why shouldn't we?'. And at this moment in time, taking measures which could negatively impact on performances and results doesn't seem like the best of ideas.

Leaving it where it is won't do any harm at all. Taking it down may well do.

Yeah, I know. But if we're out of the CL then there's little left this season than to hope a managerial change is imminent IMV. Taking the banner down could actually speed up that process. That's not a bad thing IMV. My angle is "almost no faith in Moyes" though...

As OP, I've added the additional poll to gauge opinion on this.

This was at the request of another member, before people moan about the amount on polls on here!
I'd tick the "after the game - if we get knocked out" box.

It's simple, since it's up now it stays up until he does eventually leave one day. It'd create unnecessary bad press if it was taken down now, not really worth a discussion.

Really bad move to put it up in the first place. Totally unwarranted and really arrogant. However now that it's there no point taking it down - we have to exhibit some solidarity. Even if it's superficial.

So no. Not unless he goes in which chase tear it down and burn it with fire.
