The Best Movie Trilogies

You know we're going on trilogies here Mockney, not greatest films of all time? I would not put Back to The Future nor any of the LOTR or Star Wars films as the best of all time. I agree with you that the impact of them is lessened on the tv, they are films that should be seen on the big screen.

And i don't put the Godfather in this thread because i really don't like the third one (that's a cliche i know).

Yeah that's very true...And as trilogies go both SW and LoTR deserve to be in there without a doubt..And at the top..I think they're both monumental achievements in film making, just not great films (ya get me?)

But I wouldn't discount the Godfather just cos of the third one. Jedi had space hamsters and Return of The King went on for-eeeeeever. And the Two Towers was just one long fight. I think the Godfather I&II more than make up for the 3rd...Who's only real crime is Sofia Coppola's terrible acting....and her incredibly annoying face...Oh and Andy Garcia's chest wig...actually there's a lot wrong with that film.

Godfather for me... the third is weak compared to the other 2 but then the other 2 are among the best films ever made.

For anyone that hasn't already done so I recommend reading the book of the Godfather, outstanding.

Outstanding having already seen the film?

I normally hate reading the book having watched the film adaption, as you have pre-conceived ideas of the cast / setting etc.

Still worth a read?

Having said that, I definitely recommend reading "Gangsters and Goodfellas: Wiseguys...and Life on the Run" by Guss Russo and Henry Hill - explains some of the backing to Goodfellas.

For me, on a pure film making level it has to be the Godfather Trilogy.

On a popcorn/enjoyment level it has to be Back To The Future Trilogy.
It was a great story and I found myself really caring about Marty Mcfly and the Doc.

It was also quite risky, name me another family oriented film where a Teenager gets repeatedly hit on by his Mum!

I found myself getting bored of these films too. Also the longing looks between Frodo and Sam started giving me more and more of a homosexual love story vibe. It's like Twilight with Gay Hobbits. I still really enjoy the fellowship of the ring though. I think it's the most complete film of the three.

We're forgetting a non-official trilogy here, the Dollars Trilogy from Sergio Leone. It's up there for me, second only to the Godfather.

True, you and Spoony mentioned it, I'm sorry. Now it has a post of it's one, it was kind of lost among your other candidates.

The weirdest bit of that Samdo love in was in the commentary for the first one with Ian McKellen, he says something along the lines of "as a homosexual man it's really lovely to see two young men enjoying each other so much, touching each other and having a loving relationship"....Something bizarrely subtextual and ever so slightly creepy like that. I'm pretty sure Sir Ian thought they were definitely at it....I just found the end very boring and couldn't quite work out what it was that was actually happening..Ok so they're getting on a canoe...Ok why? To die? What? Ok, why?

The Dollars trilogy are worth it for the music alone...The soundtrack set to a screensaver would be more enjoyable that sitting through the 2nd & 3rd Matrix films at any rate

Definitely, I'd seen the movies loads of times before reading the book. Gives you more information on some of the characters and overall gives you fresh perspective on a brilliant story.

As long as you dont mind knowing the outcome of the book you're reading its really enjoyable. Probably best if you haven't watched the films in a while I guess.

I hadn't seen the films in a couple of years, read the book and it prompted me to go back and watch them again, with more information on some of the characters you get a different appreciation of the films too.

That Ian Mckellen thing sounds quite funny, I might have to switch the commentary on and give it another watch now.
I had read the books so I didn't have the queries about the end, but I can see your point.

Fellowship is a great standalone film even without the others, I never tire of watching it on dvd, it is a film that will certainly age well.

I actually never saw the first one when it came out on Cinema and watched it on VHS on a crappy tv and it still blew me away, The Two Towers wasn't a great film in my opinion the weakest of the three, ROTR was epic enough to make up for the weaker second film.

What do you guys think of the Bourne series? I personally loved all the three movies, especially the last one.

There's a sub-plot in the book about a woman with a really big vagina. Can't think why that didn't make it into the film.

I have to agree with Mockney on Star Wars. I always found it to be a load of cheesy shite, and I'm 33 so its bang in my era.

Love LOTR, and the Bourne films are all very solid without being great. Back to the Future was let down by a poor third film, but I genuinely believe the first film is one of the best scripts ever written in terms of popcorn cinema for the masses.

Debbie Does Dallas
Debbie Does Dallas Again
Debbie Does Dallas Some More

Alien and Aliens were great. Shame Fincher never managed to create the third one as he wanted to, maybe it would have been better, although I still cannot see how he could have ever made it as perfect and spectacular as the first two.

Alien 4 doesnt even exist.

lord of the rings
star wars - the proper ones
can i count the indiana jones stuff - is that a trilogy or has there been 4?

got to say never watched the The Godfather - maybe i am in for a treat

Big Damon fan are we?

Bourne trilogy is entertaining, but Ocean's were plain crap.

A bit, I like Leo Di Caprio more as an actor but Damon's films have rarely lacked quality.

I like everything about Ocean's. It's like comfort food for me, in that I know this isn't Citizen Kane, but I enjoy it nonetheless. The fashion, the actors, the playful banter and overall execution of their heists. Even Ocean's 12, which is considered the weakest of the 3, was one I enjoyed for their ability to 'not take themselves seriously but still make a reasonably interesting heist flick.'

Dollars Trilogy
Dont know if these have been mentioned , Western's not everybody cup of tea and to be honest not mine , but these films are excellent.
Good stories and some of the best music in films.

The Mummy? Am I alone here in thinking that they are awful movies? Only ever seen the 1st two.

Hopefully Batman 3 will be as good as its prequel so we can add this trilogy to the list.

Lord of the Rings.

Toy Story
Bournes
The Three Colors Trilogy
LOTR

Vengence Trilogy
Godfather
Star Wars

LOTR
Godfather
Toy Story

Star Wars is the best.

Has the Infernal Affairs trilogy been mentioned? I thought it was very good. Had a nice end to it as well.
