The Banter Era

Nearly signing a mediocre racist.

Murtough and Arnold spending a week in Turin negotiating with Rabiots mum only to leave in shock at the wage demands.

Ah yes Murtough in his suit and white trainers.

There’s a video of it and someone on here likened the trainers reveal to when Alan Partridge is at the funeral and turns round to reveal his black jacket says “Castrol GTX” on the back

The general ineptitude of that window has been somewhat masked by the Casemiro signing.

It was remiscient of the Moyes window in some ways, the endless chasing of De Jong (Bale, Fabregas) and the overpaying at the end of the window for Antony (Fellaini)

Some fun contract stats

Appearances made for United since their last contract renewal:

Eric Bailly , signed in 2021, 7 appearances - 1.5m per appearance
Brandon Williams, signed in 2020, 15 appearances 500k per appearance
Phil Jones, signed in 2019, 13 appearances, 1.8m per appearance

But at least they held their value right?

We don't talk enough about the 3 amigos. Even if they acted on their own, it was peak transfer muppetry.

Paying £7m to loan Falcao while he was recovering from an ACL injury.

Fellaini signing started it all.
The midfielder had a £23.5 million release clause, which expired at the end of July and which United had opted not to activate. By negotiating in September instead, they ended up agreeing a £27.5 million fee.

Reading this thread, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The state of this club

It is and it isn't. The Chuckle Brothers went to Spain to negotiate De Jong in person, after weeks upon weeks of chasing him, came back empty handed, and then spend a king's ransom on a player that is the exact opposite of De Jong. And that role is still not filled. It just makes no sense whatsoever.

Appointing Moyes, LVG and Ole as managers.

ETH at least has credit in the bank from a decent first season. Jose made sense, and it could have worked, but it just didn't

Loads of stuff gets labelled “embarrassing” by drama queens these days, but the League Cup exits on penalties under Moyes in 13/14 (Sunderland) and LvG in 15/16 (Middlesbrough) actually were. Yours was unfortunate and we should have won the game in normal time had we actually gone for it; those two were simply inept.

Don't forget Middlesbrough in the 21/22 FA Cup!

The injury crisis, which saw us lose to Midtjylland and Sunderland, only to then beat Arsenal 3-2

There was a time towards the end of his first season, where you had a run of three or four games, and I remember thinking I could see where the plan was heading, but then it just seemed to get even more tumescent.

That period against Spurs, Liverpool (Juanfield), and whoever else when everything suddenly clicked

Shame that in the end, it was just another false dawn

Definitely one for the banter collection.

11 mins gone in the 1st half.
91% possession.
And 2 nil down.

I remember having endless debates about Fellaini on here back in the day, in retrospect was probably a bit harsh on him, but everything about him just seemed to epitomise the mediocrity of the post-Fergie era. Felt like a symbol for a lot of what was going wrong, which wasn't really his fault, but still.

It’s morally bankrupt manchilds that can’t do math.

Our club does not need to be owned by awful state owners. More to the point; having them, will do nothing. We have among the highest revenues on the planet and those numbers won’t go far north. FFP exists. We could have Trillionaire owners and they get to spend the same as far poorer owners who run the club properly.

The Qatar and Greenwood stances from some of our fans has been awful.

I might print this out and see if I can get it pinned on the foreheads of idiots on twitter and YouTube.

On the subject of leaks..

LVG sending video analysis by email because players found the meetings too boring. Players opening said emails so it looked like they had watched it but never actually viewing the content.

This is a much bigger indictment of the players than LvG.

At least that last one had merit. He was the best in the world at the time. And I know it's unpopular. But I loved seeing him in the United Kit again. Reliving my childhood. Shame he turned into the biggest cnut on the planet towards the end. If only he was humble. Just once.
I would like to add to this thread

The time aaronreddevil said ronaldo was the best player in the world in 2021

Losing 2-1 to bottom of the table Sheffield United, Oli Burke scoring the winner (his first and only Premier League goal in his career)

I feel like supposedly restructuring our entire footballing hierarchy only to then give the manager more control than ever before over who we sign is gonna end up being in this thread.

Letting go of a player because of the potential backlash, to then signing a speeding, drink driving killer a week later.

Contracts.
  • Extensions given to Ole and Jose the same year they were sacked.
  • Phil Jones signing an extension in 2019 only to barely play and collecting wages for another 4 years
  • De Gea made the highest paid GK (by far) for no sensible reason
  • Brandon Williams on 60k+ a week. Dean Henderson on 100k a week. Again, no evidence why these were required to be given
  • Mata, De Gea, Lingard, Jones and Tuanzebe, all recent United players, are currently free agents with no takers, not even Saudi
  • 80 million on Maguire is laughable. What is more laughable is paying him a sort of wage where we can't even recoup any money since no club is willing to pay a fee and those wages. Seems like the same template for Sancho and Antony too in the future.
