The Americas Draft, QF1: Tuppet vs Skizzo/Pat

Considering players at their peak, who will win the match?

  • Total voters
    21
  • Poll closed .
@Pat_Mustard just to add to the nerves, I would have switched my vote if I could. I compared units/sectors and completely overlooked what great foils that Simeone-Bochini-Ronaldo axis would be through the middle.

Ooops.

I blame that Chilean randomer. Seriously, if you go through stop collecting Pool 1 players and get that sorted.

Equally, @Tuppet would have looked a better proposition with Deco instead of Ademir.

PENALTY SHOOT-OUT

After a hard 120 minutes of blood and thunder, it's all jovial as Roberto Perfumo and Antonio Rattin meet with the referee to decide who goes first.

Perfumo wins the toss and Team Tuppet are up.

It's Romario v Taffarel...

But Romario's nowhere to be seen. He's already fecked off out of the Maracana and out on the beach with Moreno, Labruna and Pedernera.

He's back on the park.

Claudio Taffarel has done his homework though. He won a World Cup Final penalty shoot-out with Brazil and remembers Romario sweeping it into the keeper's top right-hand corner against Pagliuca. He goes the same way...

But Romario double-bluffs him and dinks it down the middle.

TUPPET 1-0 SKIZZOPAT

The flying machine Juan Joya steps up to face former River team-mate Amadeo Carrizo.

Carrizo is frozen to the spot as Joya bends the ball into the keeper's left-hand corner.

Up steps legendary goalsmith Angel Labruna. He's a little worse for wear after tanking a few bottles of Quilmes there.

He places it to his left - but Taffarel is equal to it and palms the penalty around the post.

EDIT - BUT TAFFAREL WAS OFF HIS LINE AND THE PENALTY WILL BE RETAKEN

This time Labruna scores.

Skizzopat next and it's Pablo Forlan who steps up, having aged around 40 years trying to keep up with Labruna and Romario today.

It's no bother for Diego Senior as he tucks it away in the corner with Carrizo still rooted to the middle of the goals.

TUPPET 2-2 SKIZZOPAT

Here comes the uncompromising inside-right Hector Scarone. He looks like Julian Dicks with a hangover and thunders the ball straight down the middle.

TUPPET 3-2 SKIZZOPAT

Time for El Bocha. It's been a fruitful afternoon for the Argentine Ray Wilkins, having threaded two first-half assists through the eye of a needle for Ronaldo.

He smoothly dispatches the ball into the top left-hand corner. Carrizo goes the other way.

That's Nasazzi

Up next is penalty expert Arturo Vidal. He looks confident and sticks it to Taffarel's right.

But Brazilian penalty-expert Taffarel is equal to it and turns the ball away.

It's a pivotal fourth penalty for Skizzopat and midfield warrior Diego Simeone steps up to the plate.

He goes to Carrizo's left and the keeper goes the wrong way.

Simeone turns to Vidal and celebrates in his typically understated way:

It's the fifth and final penalty and team Tuppet need to score. Here comes the silky Ademir da Guia leisurely strolling up from the half-way line.

He walks like he plays and is taking his sweet time ambling towards the penalty spot.

Its intentional! His father was called the Hitchcock of football. Anti-speed. Slow, suspenseful masters.

He's taken so long to get up to the penalty spot, Divino has aged another 50 years.

Finally, he strokes the ball as gently as Blofeld stroking his white cat.

It's a powerpuff effort though and the now-bald Taffarel makes yet another stop.

FINAL SCORE: TUPPET 3-4 SKIZZOPAT

Jaysus...these penalties never get any less tense. Very tough luck @Tuppet. Our teams were very, very close and you argued your case excellently as ever. Brilliant work with the penalties @Gio . Nearly gave me a coronary with the retake peno, and I lost it at that 'Forlan ageing 40 years' line.

Here's the breakdown in case anyone wants to check I didn't make an arse* of it.

*Obviously Nasazzi impersonating Scarone and Labruna's twice-taken penalty was all part of the plan.

Well that makes me feel less guilty for sneaking through two matches in a row on penalties :D. Aye, I genuinely felt Simeone was a good fit. Not a draft player I generally like, but well-placed here to maximise his strengths and play an effective water-carrier role. Agreed on Hormazabal sadly. I thought I might be able to find some sort of footage on him or at least some more comprehensive information, but he was neither here nor there this match because I didn't know enough about him myself. Strangely, we were generally slightly ahead of the curve throughout when it came to filling our Pool 2 slots during drafting (Physiocrat stole the show there however), but its still ended up being a constant pain in the arse for us. That last reinforcement round was troublesome for us, and there was that nagging annoyance that everyone else seemed to have improved their team more than us. Hopefully this time around it'll be better.

You go first this time, don't you? That should help.

I have to say I had never heard of this geezer. I notice some have been banging on about 50s Copas but they were generally poor for various reasons (understrength sides, etc).

A specific danger with Chilean oldies is that El Grafico always had a full Chilean edition. If you ask me, they had nothing much to write about so they created some incredibly overrated superheroes. Probably decent players, but nothing like their portraits. I remember researching one, watchig him in action, then reading their match reports and wondering if I had watched the wrong game. I hadn't.

Yeah, we have first pick and there's already some tasty Pool 2 options available.

That's interesting about the older Chilean players. There's one in particular that may or may not be playing in a draft match right now whose reputation seems to have been somewhat rehabilitated in your absence ;)

Terrible defender, but a good fit to that 82-style setup for my money.
