Really?

Hooper wouldn't have been an international player if he was getting out for nought or single digits. I can understand if its a tailender or a sheep but a guy who played 100 Test Matches, coming in when the ball is old, and lost its shine should be able to provide support to any middle order player already at the crease.
Ok, nought is definitely an exaggeration. But I keep thinking this won't be an all that high scoring game. But yeah, he is a very good player to have at 7.
I'm so confused. On atleast 5 different ocassions, I voted for Marun without saving my vote.

Hooper's record in Aus, sa and Eng are mediocre at best. Not sure how much of an extra contribution you are expecting.

Right, time's running out and while I would have liked to discuss more about this game, this is what is key:

  • Spinners are even here, and not going to really decide this game, getting that out of the way first.
  • M/V have a quality pace attack and shades NMs, although NMs has more variety, but more on that later.
  • NM won the toss and will get to use the pitch before anyone else, and M/V's relatively shorter batting order can be a problem there. Ideally you need a game deciding score in the first innings on the board but the middle order lacks depth to consolidate the innings.
  • NM's batting is facing a tougher bowling attack and there'll be casualties at the hands of Holding and Garner, sure, but Brian Lara makes the difference here. He's in a different class to any other batsman in the game and someone who can hold that innings together. Given he will have quality support up until number 7, these conditions are tailor made for him to dominate this game. My man of the match.
  • Crowe got his highest score of 299 on this surface, and he'll be a telling difference in this game as well, playing at home. Between him and Lara you have two players who can not only stay at the crease but play a vast array of shots without putting their wicket in danger.
  • Holding doesn't like bowling to left handers, and specially the chance of getting an lbw/bowled goes drastically down. It doesn't help that the best batsman of the opposition is a left hander.
  • Overall, there wasn't much to separate the bowling attacks. Both will get wickets with decent figures at the end, while one batting order is not only deeper but also has the standout player in the game, and in a 5 match series he'll get you that 2-1.
Voted NM.

Aah, sorry to hear that. Maybe a vote change will make you feel better ?
Haha. It would but I wouldn't ask you to for that reason. 20mins to go, enough time for people to decide imo. If you are still unsure, do rethink.

Hooper won't normally account more than 20 runs here imo which isn't enough to compensate for my superior pace attack but never mind, opinions and all that. I don't think how pace attacks can not be given their due credit btw, there's a reason why we focused on getting holding and garner when most were collecting top batsmen. Bowlers win matches. Especially ones in the likes of NZL.
There's a difference between giving the bowlers credit and saying that an international middle order batsman usually known for his reliability and the ability to steady the ship is not capable of scoring more than 20 runs. You've really downplayed NM's team unfairly for a lot of the game, when in reality he could've kept harping on the sheep if he wanted to, when that's a bigger and more significant difference, as a sheep by definition is a liability in a sheep draft, than anything you could have said. I love that you are so competitive, but some things were simply OTT and felt like salesman act, no offence.

His career avg is 35 with it being around 25 in Aus and SA, neither of whom had an attack anywhere close to this one.
Sorry to hear that. Get better soon!
Cheers.

He's not being asked to handle this attack alone, he has 13 international centuries and he's being asked to support one of already well set batsmen - usually Lara or Crowe - and he's more than capable of doing that. Even tail enders like Walsh have provided proper support to Lara against the likes of McGrath and Warne - things like that happen all the time.

Okay Aldo. I can't see it happening vs Garner, holding and Tyson but it's a matter of option, fine with that.

Don't know
What do they do in football drafts?
We have been trying to come up with a good solution ourselves. The latest one is penalties, but that is not possible here.
Before that, if it was a tie we would call a knowledgable poster agreed by both participating managers and take his vote as the decider. Shitty way to lose, but so is penalties.

This reminds me of when I was following City QPR game on espnfc . :p
Was thinking the exact same thing. It's going to leave a really bitter after taste for one of the teams, with a sucker punch very likely to come.

Yeah, would be a kick in the nuts for whoever loses now.

We should have a super over. Holding v Lara, Donald v Clarke.

This still seems better than coin toss. Now who is here who hasn't voted but is decently knowledgeable?

I was half hoping Ijazz would change his mind tbh after everything he said about the pitches and the factors that would decide the result
