Tennis Thread 2014

Disgusting crowd, 100% behind Federer and cheering every UE from Cilic, even first serve faults. Least he shut them all up with the instant break back.

I think most of them are just desperate to see more tennis. it would suck if it ends in three sets, without Federer ever being in the match.

Not really. Even if it went to a 5th they'd still be out there cheering every Cilic error. Every single crowd has this love in for Federer, which in itself would be fine, but it makes the crowds so desperate for him to win they'll never cheer the underdog and then start cheering opponents errors. That's just unacceptable and pathetic. They've been cheering Cilic missing first serves!

There was tremendous support for Kei in the other match, absolutely no support for the underdog here.

One of them shouted "double fault" after Cilic missed his first serve. Absolute morons.

New grand slam winner coming, so two new winners in a year.

When was last time that happened?

Wow! Can't believe that just happened! Kei vs Cilic should be a fun match and it's great for the ATP. 4 different winners and just 2 from the "top 4"

Never expected the final to be Cilic against Nishikori, great stuff.

Hope Nishikori wins it!

2003 I think...

First final since Aus 2005 with none of the big four in. And four different male slam champions and four different female slam champions in a year, don't think that happens very often.

Don't know about that but it's the first time since 2005 that none of Djokovic, Nadal or Federer will be in a Slam final.

Kei wasn't even supposed to play! He'd missed Toronto and Cincinati!

Finally Čilić! We waited and waited for him here to prove he's a great player and finally he proved it, but he should win the final too. :) Since Goran has become his coach everything is uphill for Marin. :)

Ridiculously good performance from Cilic, difficult to know exactly how good as Federer was pretty tame. But the consistency he hit with, depth on every return of serve and putting away every short ball, I haven't seen too many players who hit a relatively flat ball like Cilic be that consistent.

Missed both matches last night unfortunately but just caught up with the final. I'm quite looking forward to the final. I fancy Cilic to win but I hope Nishikori wins it. I think it could be a cracker. Not your biggest final on paper but both very good players.

I tend not to watch much of womens tennis but I hope the final tonight is a competitive one.

Murray is fecked with this final too. Nishikori has only 10 ranking points to defend as he went out round one last year, so will gain 1990 points. Cilic didn't play last year and will gain 2000 ranking points.

Nishikori will overtake Murray win or lose. Cilic will overtake, if he wins. But he won't be far behind if he loses. So Murray could drop down to 11 as he gained no points this year as he went out at the same stage as last year.

Murray's defending no points for the rest of the year though right? That's something at least...

Nice to see Serena get her 18th slam, not dropping a set all tournament is mightily impressive.

Serena was in fine form. She was really striking the ball cleanly. Not sure she will get to 22 slams as she probably won't play for too many more years although it's possible. Still, she is the GOAT for the women in my opinion.

The mens final will be a good one to watch. I think Kei has real talent and will push on no matter the result. If Cilic plays like he did against Federer, particularly serving, he will probably win. He hits such a flat ball on the backhand side it's a wonder he had such a clean match.

That's probably it for Federer. This Wimbledon and US Open were his best shots at another grandslam, and he's probably been in the best form he can be in at the age of 33. And it's still just not enough to beat the younger guys who are in form deep into tournaments.

Good to see new faces win though. Two new GS winners this year. Hope some new players genuinely emerge as year in year out contendors. Tennis will be more exciting for it.

All the more amazing considering Serena hardly won any slams in the mid 2000's due to injury and depression.

Never been a massive fan of Serena but she is among a long list of sports men/women that you have to respect just on sheer achievement a lone.

Just watched a documentary on Billie Jean King. She was courageous always and became a pivotal figure in the rise of women's tennis into a global phenomenon. The girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is possibly the most influential player ever, not because of any innovations in playing style but because of her leadership role in the development of the game into a more inclusive sport. And a truly great player, among the top half dozen women of the last 50 years. Her greatest strength as a player was her command of the mental side of the game.

Serena Williams has been ranked 1 over a span (not continuous) of more than 12 years. Has anyone else had that longevity at the very top?

So Lendl is considering returning to coaching. If I was Murray, I would be begging him to come back.

Lendl only parted ways because he wanted more time off . If he comes back to coaching it will be on a limited schedule.

I still don't understand why they play the men's final on Monday.

I know they had some rain delays over the years that forced it, but to make it officially a Monday final is a bit silly.

I thought it was a bit strange but they just said that next year it will move back to a Sunday final.
