Tennis Thread 2014

Yes!!!!!!!

Wait, it was match point? feck I didn;t realise,

A meek end to an amazing match - don't think Feds had anything in the tank there, legs were done. Gutted for him but delighted for Djok.

Exactly how I feel. Nadal may be the best athlete on the history of tennis, but Federer had a superior technique. Also, Fed was the master of all courts, Nadal was more specialized on court. Still fantastic players and both will go in history as the best ever players.

Except clay.
I'm not sure if 9 wins on clay is any worse than 7 wins on grass. Not to mention that Nadal was the first to beat Federer on every surface before the other way round (which I'm still not sure has ever happened; I don't think Federer has ever been Rafa on clay).

He has. He beat nadal on clay in a junior tournament and nadal asked for his shirt(back in 2008/9)

What happened with Fed in the end? It would be difficult for him to get another final in GS.

Fair fecking play to Djokovic.

Good final. Fed played terribly at the end there. Peak Murray would have won against either of them today.

Wouldn't be the worst time for him to chuck it now actually, since he's still near the top which is an incredible thing for someone of his age. Not many can reach his age without going significantly downhill.

Fed was great at the clay, but unfortunately for him Nadal is the best ever on those pitches. Fed won once, but also lost 4 finals on French Open.

Yeh it was a really disappointing end, to be honest. Both of them started making massive errors and Federer just collapsed harder. Did he get a single first serve in, in that final game?

Not a bad display of mental strength by a choker...

Christ, gutted for Federer. What a match he played. He's almost 33 ffs and he pushed a peak Djokovic all the way.

This would have been more amazing than Germany winning the WC for me.... why did his first serve have to go awol at this point?

Still, Djokovic's timeout bullshit makes me mad as feck. He's an amazing player, why does he need the faking?

Once it got to 5 sets Federer was never going to win it. Great effort from him to get it to that point though, and fair play to Djokovic for coming back from losing the 4th.

Delighted. Come on Nadal, 3 more Grand Slams to go starting at the US Open!

Epic performance from Federer. One of the best finals in history, especially given the career disparity of both players.

Not as good as the 2008 final but still a classic in my opinion. Disappointed Federer couldn't come back, but to take Djokovic at his peak to a 5 setter in the latter years of his career shows what a legend he his.

Tbf, women's tennis is shit.

It's been worse in the past decade but I remember enjoying it in the 90s. If they were given the chance to have some good 5 set battles I think it might perk it up a bit.

Actually the trend is to eliminate the 3 out of 5 format from the men's side, mainly to avoid injuries and prolong careers.

I know, but personally I think that would be a real shame. Thankfully I don't think we'll see that in any of the Grand Slams any time soon. 3 sets doesn't give players the chance to have a meltdown and then make a great comeback, as we've in many of the best matches.

Nowhere close to the Nadal / Federer finals in 2007 and 2008. Absolutely nowhere close.

Still wins the best head of hair award.

I love you feds xoxoxoxoxox

Well done Djokovic. Stellar effort from Federer to pull it to five sets too.

He never won on clay(French Open) even before nadal though. And losing to a 17/18 year old nadal when he was at his peak has to count against him.

The main difference between them is that federer is so much better on the hard courts and is more consistent than nadal. Nadal tends to have freak losses more often.

Will never happen.
It almost certainly will I think. This was Fed's last chance to add to his tally, and Nadal's got at least a couple more French Opens in him - only a matter of time til he reaches 18.

Will never happen.

Still a decent chance of it, Nadal could definitely get three more although I'm not sure of whether he will or not.

Nadal will do it on clay alone, even if he doesn't win another Slam elsewhere. The record is his, he just has to avoid injury. He's just that much better than the rest at the French.
