Tennis Thread 2013

There is absolutely no variety at all. Just 2 women competing to see who can hit the ball the hardest and screech the loudest.
Not a lot of variety left in men's tennis either. Serve and Volley? whaaaaaaaaaat? Almost everyone is a baseline grinder now, so many counter punchers in the game.

Tennis as a whole has moved towards power and away from a lot of the more nuanced play.

Lot more than the women's game though.

You look at the likes of Azarenka, Kvitova, Sharapova etc.. they all have very similar games that bore the hell out of me. Compare that to Henin for example who was a lot more enjoyable to watch. The women's game needs someone different to make things interesting again.

Compare that to the men's game, there's a lot more variety. Yes Tennis as a whole is more geared towards power but all of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray have differing games which makes for fantastic matches.

Nadal is pretty much, barring a ridiculous special dispensation, going to be seeded 5th for Wimbledon.

I agree with the general sentiment.Serena is too good for the current women's game. It's a good period for her to rack up as much grand slams as possible before her retirement.

Serena serves stronger and faster than Nadal and Djokovic... to name a few. She should play with men to be fair haha... She is too strong to the rest of girls out there.

But nah... in the end, is up to the girls to play better. Talent always beat strenght in the end.

My favourite woman tennis player is Hingis, because she was talented and hot, BUT, the best ive seen is Justine Henin... she could just beat anyone out there and be the number 1 by playing beautiful tennis, beating anyone out there. Too bad she retires too soon, but at the top at least.

Chilean Christian Garín beat Alexander Zverev 6-4 y 6-1 in the RG junior final =)

ehehehe excellent!! (he lost the double final though...)

They've done it for Federer and Serena before so I can't see why it would be ridiculous. But it's something I've always found unfair so I hope it doesn't happen.

Would have been nice if Kim and Henin were still around. Serena wouldn't have turned up for half the Slams and stuck to her fashion work.

When? (for Federer that is, Serenas doesn't really matter, barely has significance).

It's not simply based off the rankings, they take them into account plus previous(sometimes a year, sometimes more) history at said tournament. Nadals runner up two years ago still isn't enough for him to take over Ferrer considering Ferrer went further last year in their way of doing, thus the special dispensation.

Nadal is a 5 time finalist and two time winner so I would say he qualifies for special dispensation. But I do agree with wr8, Wimbledon should base it on rankings alone than feck around with the seedings like they usually do

Very quiet crowd today - the Spanish cannot openly cheer for either Nadal or Ferrer today and the French, well, they don't give a shit either way

Well this is a boring match, unfortunately. Nadal was lucky to beat Djokovic, this crap vs. Ferrer is just useless.

Lucky? If anything he should've closed the match in 4.

Yea, he was lucky to win the fifth set 9:7. If Nole would have won he'd been the lucky one. Djokovic only switched off in the third set, the rest of the game was pretty much even.

So protestors shouting from the stands, then a nut job with a flare? Weird...

Must say, tennis security beats footy security.

Serena would be a great in ANY era she was better than Clijsters and Henin Hardenne. No women can match up with her the same way they couldn't match Navratilova.

p.s Nadal is in the zone

I said it before the tournament but Rafa has been incredible this year. His doubters about both his fitness and people saying Djokovic will beat him have been proved wrong. Look at his record this year, it's amazing. A peak Djokovic has now failed twice against Rafa at the French, when it really matters.

Last year Rafa was going down and only the rain saved him.

Also, I'm not too sue this is Novaks peak really. I'd say during his ascent and at his peak he beat Nadal 7 times in a row..

If their football kits weren't bad enough, after all these years I'm still waiting for Nike to make a pair of shorts that don't give Nadal a constant wedgie.

Was this any better than the beating Serena gave the Italian girl in the SF? Why did Ferrer even bother to get on the court - might as well have defaulted.

That tells you more about the state of womens tennis than Sareena herself tbh. Played well though

No it doesn't. It simply tells you that Serena is on a completely different level to any female in tennis.

Without a doubt one of the greatest ever, if not THE greatest ever. Just unstoppable right now.

Personally I always have and likely always will prefer women's tennis.

Quality from Nadal too, great guy.

Keep telling yourself that.
It's a big assk

She is but the reason why she is winning grand slams left right and centre is due to the appalling lack of depth in women's tennis.

Serena is definitely one of the greatest players of all time, top 5 for sure. A career Golden Slam in both singles and doubles will never be achieved again. Would loved to have seen her face Graf in her peak.

Believe it or not, Ferrer tried his best and was in some points really impressive.Problem is maintaining a certain high level of performance vs Nadal is required and he just couldn't do it.Not a lot of players could have anyway.8th title at Roland Garros and he still isn't a crowd favorite in France ...

To be fair to Ferrer, he played much better than the scoreline would suggest. It wasn't a complete thrashing

Amazing Rafa, congrats!!!

end of clay season, and it ends as always... with Rafa lifting the RG title.

He steps down of Halle tournament, so i guess we will see him again in Wimbledon. Looking forward to it...

Well beating Federer really wasn't a big deal at all. He's been woeful all year and almost lost to Simon in the previous round. Ferrer has been the best player in the tournament so far.
Actually Federer had looked quite sharp at RG prior to the Tsonga match (even the match against Simon - a decent enough player - was a good example of resilience [much like against Benneteau at Wimbledon last year]). However, he was awful against Tsonga, and for some reason, just hasn't been able to summon his best this year.

Yes, you could make the easy claim that he has lost it, but people have been saying the same thing for the last 3 years, and yet he went on a remarkable run last year. I think it's in his head, and hopefully Wimbledon will help him to shake it off.

He just doesn't have the weapons to beat any of Nadal, Djokovic or Federer.

Nadal was superb. Ferrer played some decent tennis at times but he just couldn't keep up with Nadal. With him back in form, Djokovic still around as always and Federer and Murray as well as some others like Ferrer, Tsonga etc hopefully being able to mount challenges and play well, Wimbledon looks like it could be brilliant this year.

King of clay, simple as. A record of 60-1 will simply not be paralleled in any of our lifetimes. He just can't be stopped right now at Roland Garros.

Serena had a losing record vs Henin in Slams so I don't really think she was any better than Henin

So? what a way to cherry pick. They have met in one grand slam final and serena won also she has a better overall record. You only have to watch their games to see who is better.
