Tennis Thread 2013

Some of the shots these guys are playing could break other players. Its insane.

Only started watching and not a tennis regular, what rule was it?

The worst thing about this all is that......Ferrer or Tsonga could triple bagel win and I'd still have one of these winning so easily, especially against Ferrer, that guys a jobber to Djoko/Nadal/Fed

If you hit the net whilst the point is still in play (eg it hasnt bounced twice to signal end of point) then you forfeit the point.

These matches between these players ... fecking shit, unbelievable stuff to watch as a neutral.
Whoever gets into the final in the other match will definitely lose vs Nadal

Djokovic lost it on that point where he decided to hit the volley first time and subsequently stumlbed into the net. Had he let it drop, he would have had an easy shot to put away. he would have won that game then and not gotten broken.

VAMOS RAFA!!!

tomorrow do your shit and shut up some mouths :smirk:

thx Rafa!

what a game!!! stress levels very high right now... and i wasnt even playing... amazing how these guys can play at these level, crazy mental strenght.

ufff... good game, i wanted it to finish sooner but all good,....

RG number 8 very soon!! history on the making with Rafa, as usual.

Vamos Rafa! N1

Need a screenshot of Nadals troll face when Djoko hit the net.

 Proved me spectacularly wrong, I honestly thought Djokovic had this tbh. Haven't gotten to watching the match yet, but he must have improved over his form in the previous rounds.

Seriously, I'm not even a tennis fan.I mostly watch the big tournaments (the G.S) and not even thoroughly .. I still appreciate the effort both Djoko and Nadal displayed, that should have been the final.
The level of concentration, mental strength they both possess is extraordinary.

tbf he kind of did have it.....was bullying him in the fifth, then he either started to think about it too much or just gassed out a bit. Gave it up very softly in the end. These two though, yeah....would of loved Djoko to have been this good at an early stage too, 2008-09 would of been brutal if all three were able to 5 so effortlessly....which Federer really can't now.

On other news, Christian Garin is looking to follow the steps (and improve them i hope) of fellow countryman, Fernando Gonzalez.

He will play the final of RG jr on singles and doubles... Gonzalez won both on 1998.

Garin is among the 5 youngest players to ever won a ATP game with only 16 yo and 8 months... Rafa is among that list also. Looks promising... at the very least.

feck yeah!!

These two guys just keep on pulling out great matches like it's no big deal. Hope there's plenty more to come from them yet.

I wanted Djokovic to win as I'm bored of seeing Nadal win at Roland Garos, but I also didn't want Djokovic to win all 4 Slams in the year. Still, 12 Slams overall for Nadal now as the final will be a non-event, should finish with around 15, just short of Fed's total. Wimbledon should be epic if Federer can step it up again.

Yeah but from what I heard, Nadal had his chances to close it out in 4 too, which considering his form up to this match kinda surprised me. I thought Djokovic wanting it more and his declarations of "I know how to beat him and I will win" would see him through.

We'll just have to settle for the trio of Murray and the other two, though not on clay

Well, wow. What a bloody match that was. Caught bits of it at work and then rushed home for the final set. I really thought it was gone when Nadal threw it away when serving for it and then going a break down early in the 5th but what a comeback in the final set! Some of the tennis these two guys played was quite hard to believe and it's a level no other player in the world can play at!

This match was quite identical to their final in Australia last year. There Djoko had gone 2 sets to 1 up before Nadal won the 4th in a tie break , got the early break in the 5th, went up 4-2 and then failed to close it out before losing it.

Anyway hopefully Ferrer continues his poor form against Rafa on Sunday. If he does win, he'd have won 7 of the 9 tournaments he's played this year and he's also reached the final of every single tournament he's played since his comeback from the 7 month layoff.

Set the DVR to record the match for four hours. Ar'n't I a dumbass?

Great match either way...

Tsonga ... fecking loser. It's all smiles and arrogance when you win but extreme cuntishness when you lose.
Didn't see it. What did he do? Incredible how he could be so dialled in against Federer (who to be fair, was far below his best,) and then be so awful against Ferrer.

Well beating Federer really wasn't a big deal at all. He's been woeful all year and almost lost to Simon in the previous round. Ferrer has been the best player in the tournament so far.

After each match, the french television are always the first for a quick interview of players when they are about to leave the court, it's not a real interview, just a few words of immediate reaction after win/defeat.
The usual (ground) camera wasn't on Tsonga but the aerial one was, he first refused to talk to the journalist (who is a fecking bellend btw) because apparently "no camera were filming him". He wanted to go and refused to talk in a prima donna way only for him to change his mind when told the aerial was on and filming him.

How good is serena? There is just no competition for her, when she is at her best right now.

That tells you more about the state of womens tennis than Sareena herself tbh. Played well though

Women's tennis has been dire for a decade or more now. Last time it was good was when William sisters had just broken in and likes of Capriati, Hingis and Davenport were around.

Physically they cannot match her. She is 31 and is still the best athlete in the female game. She is a great tennis player also I don't think any other woman has played at a higher level. She was not at her best and she best Sharapova comfortably. I think it's something like 13 straight for Serena against herand to think Sharapova said her hardest match is Hingis hahahaha.

I disagree with some of you.

Serena has 16 GS wins

These are the people she beat to win them

Martina Hingis -1
Venus Williams -6
Maria Sharapova -2
Lindsay Davenport -1
Jelena Jankovic -1
Dinara Safina -1
Justine Henin -1
Vera Zvonareva -1
Agnieszka Radwanska - 1
Victoria Azarenka - 1

Those same people have won 28 grand slams
Venus Williams - 7
Justine Henin - 7
Martina Hingis - 5
Maria Sharapova - 4
Lindsay Davenport - 3
Victoria Azarenka - 2

Not to mention other contemporaries such as Kim Clijsters(4). Absolutely no reason to downplay her record at all - that she is so far ahead of everyone, despite the injuries, illnesses, personal tragedy is a credit to her, not an opportunity to disparage the opposition.

She didn't win those Grand Slams by beating scrubs like Sania Mirza.

I am not downplaying her record. Just the state of women tennis has been dire and unappealing for so long. Likes of Hennin and Kim actually illustrated it pretty well, when the retired and then came back to stroll to couple of Grand Slams. I used to watch women's tennis matches with as much interest in the era I mentioned above or even when Graf was about.

There is absolutely no variety at all. Just 2 women competing to see who can hit the ball the hardest and screech the loudest.

Serena is great no doubt but she has been winning a lot of her Slams now over the last few years with Kim and Henin gone. She does have a rather easy field to play against right now. It says a lot about women's tennis that Errani, who lost to Serena in the semis 6-0 6-1 and is the Number 5 seed here, said that she "enjoyed getting hammered" in the semi final.
