Tennis 2023

I think a large part of that is Alcaraz just unloading on the ball at weird times. Very little point construction and a shit tonne of heavy rally balls.
This is something I've thought he's quite poor at. The Big 3 are great at point construction and had a lot more patience. Carlos seems to want to be a lot more aggressive imo and it may work against the other mental midgets on tour but got to change it up a bit sometimes.

That’s probably a function of age and experience as much as anything. In terms of today, I meant both are doing it. Hitting this heavy doesn’t really allow for much more.

Yeah, with time I he'll get there in time

Bit interesting to see Djokovic trying to tee off against Alcaraz.

Trying to play a bit like his 2011 - 2014 self here.

Seems to be taking more out of him, though.

Shame, that second set was fantastic.

Shame it had to end this way. Could have gone either way but ultimately being physcially reliable is part of the game.

These Gen Z players are always going down with cramps, they're simply not built for slams. Need to spend hours in the gym instead of on Tiktok.

I'm pretty sure Alcaraz is spending enough time in the gym. But he's only 20, plays a very physical game and has already accumulated a lot of tennis at a young age. It should be much of an issue long term.

Djokovic, what a weapon celebrating like that. Brother should know more than anyone it might take to grow into the body, he was always blowing up and would of retired in the same state when he was 20

This is obviously a landmark game for Djokovic, but why's he dealing with this moment like this? It's genuinely like he wants the sport to end with his retirement. Weird dude.

"The medicals in the vaccination did that to you"

:wenger:

Sorry it ended like this for young Carlos...

Respect to Novak on another final. Those first set and a half was great tennis from Novak. I expect him to get No 23 on Sunday.

I'm hoping that Carlos will be fine soon and that Novak does not retire from the game for a couple of years because I want to see more matches with these two (minus the cramping!).

We already missing Roger and Rafa so we need another good rivalry...

Have to hope Zverev wins this one. Not sure I have the heart for watching Ruud happily smiling and waving at his family while he gets absolutely pumped by Djokovic.

I'm with you on this. Definitely hoping for a Zverev win.

While I agree, with you, to be fair to Ruud last year against Nadal was his first ever Grand Slam, up against his idol. Given this would be his third slam final (which is a pretty impressive achievement in itself), I think his approach and attitude would have to be different on Sunday. Would still expect him to lose but he surely can't go out there just being happy to be there after two final defeats.

Absolutely delighted. Novak will destroy the grand slam record. Get out young pretenders. You can win your little matches in non gs tournaments vs djokovic but when it’s time to get serious you get pumped. Easy.

Wow. Anti-climatic. If Ruud wins highly likely a 23. Zverev does have a chance and a game to beat Novak.
But how do you get cramps after 2 days rest and after only 2 sets!? I mean it is not like Alcaraz won USO easily. He had some 5 setter against Sinner and lost sets in other matches as well. I don't get it.

Don't think I've seen it mentioned as the obvious number is 23 but it will also be an opportunity for him to win every Grand Slam at least 3 times. There's very much an argument to say that the US Open is the tournament he has performed the worst at.

I'm a big Nadal fan and I've thought that Djokovic has been the GOAT for some time. Time for him to solidify things on Sunday and squash any argument against his claim.

An argument? It's common knowledge, he's a career US underachiever, and some of it is just baffling, losing in straight sets to Murray and Danlil? Nadal and Rog would never lose to a scrub outside of their elite Big 3 memberships in straight sets like that in a final nor allow an outsider like Wawrinka to have an absurd hoodoo over them.

Forget the loss to Kei Nishikori.

The US is just an oddity of a Slam, because there's more to it than just Djokovic's underachievement there. Federer once lost to an unseeded player who might as well have been called the Milkman for all I know, Murray also lost to Kei Nishikori which a big favourite and in the form of his life, and let's not ignore the consistent Serena ranting and raving.

More so as he'd won more US Open titles than at RG. I've definitely seen some say RG is his weakest slam before.

It was a weird time for him, but losing to Ceccinato at RG is a worse look than Kei.

Given there are almost no good grass court players on tour, if Djokovic wins on Sunday I wouldn’t bet against him rolling through Wimbledon without being remotely troubled and having another crack at it in Flushing.
Wimbledon will be a cakewalk for Novak so not even remotely considering anyone else winning there. USO is the one he's not that good at and where you often have random winners so he could maybe lose there.

Absolutely. I don't really get the underestimating of Novak based on Masters where he's been underwhelming for the last few years. The amount of hype about Carlos and even this week, the comparisons to Nadal at RG, were hilarious. It's all well and good beating trash like Shapo and Tsitsipas but there's literally one big test in men's tennis right now and he failed it today. He's going to win a lot of Slams in the future but that's only because he'll have a poor field to run through.

He didn't lose in straights to Murray - it was 3-2. I was actually at that match live. It was weirdest conditions - extremely fast wind. Not an excuse, Murray won first 2 sets and won 5th set decisively. In 2021 - Danil had easiest draw ever to that final while Novak had to battle in form Berretini and in form Zverev (who just beat him at Olympics).

Does Zverev realise he's in a slam semi final? What a terrible performance!

Already broken in the 3rd set....
