Tennis 2019

Nadal didn't sound too positive about his fitness earlier. He even referenced the potential for injury based on how he was feeling.

Fed clearly in a hurry to get to dinner. Wins in less than an hour.

Interesting day in Madrid today. Starting with Čilić v Đere, both playing quite nicely last few days, glad that Marin found some form. Then it's Nole's turn, and after him Federer going against Monfils, that has to be fun.

Nadal is playing quite later though, not sure I'll watch him, with all the Europa League at the same(ish) time.

Ferrer lost yesterday against Zverev 4-6 1-6, but he led 4-1 in the first set, quite the decline. Think he also went into retirement after the match.

Federer on course to bagel Monfils in the first.

Ton of UE for Monfils and seems that he just can't handle Federer's slice.

Some good QFs tomorrow

Djokovic vs Cilic
Federer vs Thiem
Tstisipas vs Zverev
Wawrinka vs Nadal

Cilic is ill so has withdrawn. Djokovic to play Federer or Thiem in the semis

Expect Thiem to win.

If he can beat Djokovic though then that will help his FO chances as it will deflate Djokovic more who has not been playing well these months even though maybe @wr8_utd was right as he’s looked somewhat decent in his last two games albeit not the toughest opponents.

Thiem played well in that second set and started well in the third.

Even if Federer goes out, I think he should be happy with his return to clay. Not sure if he will play Rome but the conditions there are more similar to Roland Garros.

The right dude won but Federer was excellent considering it's only his third game back on clay. Madrid's a lot faster than RG though so stylewise this remains likely to be Federer's best tournament.

Meanwhile Djokovic gets a walkover. Looking forward to the semis.

Zverev now down to 5th in the ranking. That’s not good for Nadal as Thiem will probably be on his side of the draw at the French.

Comfortably Nadal's best performance of the clay season. Tstsipas next in the semis.

Not sure why it's a bad thing?

If Thiem was the 5th seed at RG, he could get him in the QFs.

I'm looking forward to the semi finals.

Gutted I missed Roger's matches vs Monfils and Thiem. Seems they were quite competitive. Instead stuck at work:(

Novak/Thiem should be an especially good watch.

Rafa in great shape, destroyed Stan last night!

Shame Federer ended up with such a tough draw this week, pretty good showing all things considered though. Not sure about his decision to play Rome but understandable given his rustiness.

Djokovic vs Nadal should be good if Novak plays like he did today - he'll need a win over Nadal either here or in Rome if he wants a shot at the French I think.

Good match between Tsitsipas and Nadal. 1 set all. Currently on serve in the 3rd.

Kiki Bertens is now the number 4 in the world. What happened to the level of women's tennis:lol:

Looks like Tstisipas will take this.

Good performance from him, very solid when facing break points a lot of the time.

Nadal loses. Good match.

Gonna be an interesting French Open.

Ah much better watch today with this final. No more football for a while thank goodness.

Does anyone reckon Tsitsipas can cause another upset today?

as good as he was vs Rafa, I just can't see Djoko losing another masters. we'll see.

Djokovic won very comfortably and now ties Nadal with 33 Masters 1000 titles.

Tstisipas looked tired today unfortunately but Novak was so solid.

French Open will be interesting for sure. I think the draw will be crucial here. For example Nadal or Djokovic could have to play Tstisipas in the QFs and Thiem in the SFs. If they make it through I think I think they'd probably lose the final should they then play each other.

I thought Djokovic looked pretty ominous today. His forehand had the odd misfire but he played the big points so well and never really gave Tsitsipas a look in.

"He deserved the victory, he played unbelievable. I couldn’t do much. Really like I think his performance this week – I didn’t play with all the guys, but pretty sure was the best. He played quite smart. He tried moving me around the court. He knew I had a tough match last night, so he took advantage of that knowing that, you know, he’s going to have to make me run and suffer more and I just didn’t have solutions.

He has the best backhand on tour I have ever seen in a human being. He controls it so well. He can play cross, he can play down the line the same way. And that’s very difficult to deal with. Usually some players have a good stroke, but it’s not that consistent, so I find if he’s in a day where his serve works pretty well, the placement of his serve, his forehand is not his biggest weapon. He can hit it but it’s not his biggest weapon. But he can, if the backhand and the serve work really well, he can – that is why he has been dominating for so many years."

Stefanos Tsitsipas

What did you do, young lad?

Looking forward to videos.

Halep out as well.

Double programme for most of the lads today. Federer should be out in an hour or so again.
