Finally Cilic crumbled.

He reminds me so much of Safin sometimes. When he's hitting the ball well, he can't be touched on either wing, but much like Safin he can't sustain that level.

Great "Match Summary" stat. Apparently, Federer won 24 points this match to Cilic's 36.
The AO-stat-department has had a shocker all tournament. My favorite was the "Win Predictor" giving Sandgren 0% in the fifth agains Thiem. :wenger:
 
Much harder than expected and Cilic looked at times the far better player, but the old master got it.

No idea when are we going to have an another male to get 20. And well, Fed isn't done yet.
 
Great job by Federer. I think had Cilic broken him in the first game of the final set, it might have gotten away from him. Shame that Cilic had those lulls. His highest level in this match was waaaaaaay higher than Federer's but keepin that level for more than a set at a time was beyond him.

lol yeah. I saw the 36% first serve stat for Federer and was like...what? Then saw total points won and understood that the stat team screwed up.

Always subjective, but nothing comes close in my opinion. None of us can overview all great athletes and most of us haven't seen some of the greats perform a single time, but from what I've seen this is the pinnacle of sport.
 
He is the best athlete on the planet. Didn't even play his best, but found something to pull it out. He is magnificent.
Great talent, elegance, style, aggression, unbelievable mentality and heart. Great Champion.
 
Class is permanent, Fed is quite an unbelievable athlete to be doing what he's doing at his age
 
Cilic can be proud to be honest. He gave it a right go. Had Fed doubting himself for a bit there.
 
Great final. Shame Cilic dropped off in that last set but so impressive from Fed to stick around. Crazy how many good moments he's given us these last 12 months, he was already the GOAT but defending a slam at 36 is something I never thought I'd see him do.
 
At times Cilic was hitting the ball so hard and accurately Federer couldn't live with it but I always felt he couldn't sustain it, he was very lucky to win the 2nd set. What I love about 5 set tennis is that it gives time for form to come and go

Winning US Open this year might be just there for Rosewall's record I think. (Edit: Ah, no, it's played too early for that)
