Federer's ability to hang in there defensively has improved massively compared to the last few years.

yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Federer is the greatest athlete in all sports at this time imho. He has everything, amazing champion

What a god. Wins the whole thing without losing a set.
was in the tougher quarter as well. Incredible at this age.

Has a chance to close the gap to Murray and Djokovic in Miami and has about 1000 points to defend till the end of the season.

Federer can realistically be in a punching distance for the #1 spot come the end of the year if he stays healthy and in this form.

Even easier than predicted. GOAT.

The fairy tale comeback continues. On to Miami, hope he makes it 4 in a row vs Nadal.

How will the rankings/seedings without Murray and Djokovic look? Federer in fourth, I think, but what about Nadal?

The man is actually ridiculous. I also don't think I'll ever get bored of watching his backhand.

World number 1 by end of year?

Murray and Djokovic have lots of points to defend. Where as Federer missed most of last season besides Wimbledon. He has a free hit.

In the world, but Djokovic and Murray are out for the tournament, so no more ridiculous quarters of death.
Oh I see. I guess 4th for Miami? Nadal should be ranked 3rd at least

Federer will leap over Nadal in the rankings. Nadal will lose 180 points come tomorrow while Federer gains 1000.
Wow, i didn't realise that. Really thought Nadal was a bit further ahead

Didn't realise Tommy Haas was now a tournament director:)

"Comeback player of the year" is probably the only accolade he hasn't won yet, btw. :smirk:

yeah it's crazy. If Federer manages to win Miami somehow he'll be 3000 points ahead of Murray in the race and around 3500 ahead of Djokovic.

Not sure how focused he'll be in the clay swing and on the #1 position, but I doubt Murray can replicate his clay form from last year.

The field in Miami is up for the taking.

It just looks like Fed is playing a free game where his mind is at ease and everything is just coming natural to him because all the pressure has been lifted off his shoulders since winning no.18 because he probably thought he may never win another slam again.

Anyway that was good. Bed time now - good night all!

Guess he'd need at least one of Wimbledon or the US Open with a deep run at the other, plus Cincinnati/Shanghai and a good indoor swing. I don't see it happening personally, don't think his body or form will hold up for a whole year and his clay schedule will probably be too limited.

Probably not to be honest. He'd need to win Wimbledon(would be 2000 point shift as Murray defends the title there), one more masters and go deep in the other two slams(around semis). He will pick up points here and there and can win Halle and Basel (which is worth 1000 points) in this form.

Murray has awful lot of points to defend - 1 slam and 1 slam final at the FO. 3 MS + 2 finals and WTF win. Judging by his form and that both him and Djokovic not being in form Federer basically needs to keep around this level and has a realistic shot.

The stuff he is doing now is just incredible. The greatest athlete I have ever seen.

Amazing.

He's now up to 6th from 17th just a couple of months ago and is headed to Miami when Djokovic and Murray have withdrawn there due to injury.

I'd still rate Ali a notch above tbh, not least because of his activism and its ramifications on his career. Roger is a great role model but he's shied away from taking a stance against systemic problem in the sport on more than one occasion.

Could not care less.
