That's the mental difference between the Top 4 and the rest. One game where he gets broken and he completely falls apart. Federer isn't even having to play great stuff here to win this. He's going to win this without getting out of 3rd gear.
There is not such a thing. Murray is much closer to Wawrinka (in fact, they have won the exact number of grand slams) than the big three.

A retirement would be an incredibly underwhelming way for Federer to break the record.

I don't agree with this. You're right in terms of slam wins, but in every other way, Murray has him. He's been regularly considered part of that elite 4 for years, making a heap of GS finals. Murray also has 2 Olympic Golds and carried his country to a Davis Cup win.
I reckon if this wasn't the final he'd be off surely. He looks gutted.
To be honest, he wouldn't be breaking down like this if it wasn't the final. Seems like it's purely emotions.

There is no 'big four'. Murray is miles behind the other three which is clearly shown by his Grand Slam record. I would say Murray is comfortably ahead of the rest especially his consistency but he isn't close to Federer, Nadal or Djokovic.

Murray has won more masters than Wawrinka.
I find the top 4 thing very artificial. Federer with 18 GS, Nadal with 15, Djokovic with 12, and Murray with ... 3. The other three have had a much much better career than him, and he simply isn't on their level, and as I said, much closer to Wawrinka than the big 3.

This is really strange. There's no way that was just an emotional issue, is there?

There's the One-Above-All, that's Federer, then the Living Tribunal, let that be Nadal, then Thanos with Infinity Gauntlet, that's Đoković. Murray is like a Loki or something.

Anyone work out what that was all about? Why the tears and medics? he looks fine now, from an injury pov.
Looks like a mental/emotional breakdown.

Agreed. Murray can't hold a candle to the other three.

Cilic seems to have mental issues at the moment rather than physical. He's spring chicken around the court.

I'm no fan of Murray but he's definitely a Top 4 player for me irrespective of how many Slams he's had. He's consistent, he's a made a lot of Slam finals, won lots of titles as well. He's just unlucky to be up against those 3.

Surely he wouldn't have brought out two blokes to watch him cry in that case?
He seems to be moving freely, so can't see it being physical.

Perhaps he felt something from that slip and fall in the first set. He starting playing worse and that clearly affected him emotionally as well. Hard to know what goes on inside a player's head.

Might have started blarting then got embarrassed so tried to make it look like he was injured? If he is injured, he is hiding it very well. Seems to be moving fine.

Off to play some football now. Congratulations in advance to the Federer fans on here. It's been a well deserved title for your guy. Hope he stops winning now

Has anyone ever won the Wimbledon without losing a set?

This is excellent stuff from Federer. TBH, I wanted a simple match for him not a competitive one. Feck it, smash hiim and win in straight sets.

You've just described Roddick as well.

Murray won 14 Masters titles in comparison to Stan who won 1. He also won the olympic games twice and in terms of consistency he is closer to the other three and also made the number one which Wawrinka never will. I know what you mean, but there is still a reason why people talked about a Top4 including Murray despite his low amount of slam titles. The other 3 are a tier above in the end that's true but Stan shouldn't be mentioned alongside Murray either.
