Tennis 2016

Completely forgot about Shanghai. Mainly cause Rafa got dumped put at the start. Not seen any of it, but pretty shocking for Djoko to lost to a guy like RBA in the straight sets.

Not as shocking as the levels of Kyrgios' cuntishness.

Djokovic loses again.

Murray has a great chance of being number 1. I think Djokovic just seems burned out, which is no surprise considering the last 5 years he has had. Should take a break and come back refreshed in early January.

I read a comment on Djoko's performance since the French Open, apparently it's also because of a lack of motivation. Now that Rafa and Federer are gone, there's no one really for him to look up to and that desire (to play against the best two players) is simply gone. Now he's only chasing 'statistics' and his whole challenge is basically of mathematical nature. He indicated so himself by lamenting the 'pointlessness of the chore' to collect trophies vs. being fired up to play against the world's best players.

When we're looking at a line-up of Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka, Raonic, Nishikori, Monfils, Thiem and Berdych for London, the above theory makes a lot of sense.

I was going to go again this year to the WTF but the line up makes me think the better of it. Tickets were pricey last year too. With my favorite player Nadal out and also Federer out (who I've never seen live), I'll only go if the tickets are very cheap. Will be interested to see what the turnout is like.

And some people still claim the first decade of the 21st century was a weak generation of players compared to today... most uninspiring line up I've seen at the Masters.

Told ya! :D

You're probably right in that it's a physical issue, but he made it clear there was an issue he didn't want to talk about and it sounded like a mental thing with me. His prioriy didn't seem to be tennis at this point in time.

It'll take a bit of a hit but should still be a good overall turnout as long as Murray's there. Can't imagine something like Berdych vs Thiem on a weekday afternoon will be setting any attendance records though...

Paris masters. Will be interesting to see if Nole can pull himself together again. Btw, he has lost a lot of weight and I've read it's due to a strict vegan diet. I'm not a nutritionist but is it possible that he has literally become physically weaker due to his diet? Does he need to start eating dairy products and fish and meat? He's so skinny and looks ill somehow.

Wawrinka is such a strange player. Great slam player but outside of that he really is pretty average.

Some people on here were saying he is better than Murray.

Which was borderline ridiculous.

Think it's a fair argument to say his peak level is higher than Murray's (his style of play adds to that).

I'd maybe agree with that. But for sheer consistency Murray has him beat comfortably IMO.

Not watching but Cilic- Djoko seems like a good match. Cilic up a set. Djoko served for the set before being broken and then saved a few match points at 6-5. Now into a tie break..

Djokovic lost so Murray world number one if he makes it into the final now :)

What an incredible turnaround for Nole's season post RG. He doesn't look fit at all and really needs a good offseason.

Ultimately, Wawrinka can take the racket away from any player on tour and hit them off court.

On the whole, though, he's an extremely streaky player that has turned it on at three slams, winning one while playing a one-legged Nadal.

It's especially strange when you consider he's only won 15 ATP events in his entire career, most of which coming in the past three years.

It's more a case of him becoming normal again and coming back down from his freakishly great level of the last two years. It was unsustainable for him to continue with that level. He's still going to win a lot of tournaments especially with the lack of a consistent opponent other than Murray.

Djokovic is also getting close to the dreaded 3-0 age mark which seems to be the death knell for a lot of great tennis players. Natural to see a little bit of decline.

Hopefully Murray can finally win an AO if Djokovic continues in poor form, been to five finals but has had the misfortune of coming up against Novak in four and Federer in the other one.

Stan will be there in the grand slams. I've had the pleasure of seeing him live and the guy is an animal when locked in. His "top" level is above Murray, but Murray is incredibly consistent. Roger will be back next year too.

That is true but the fall has been rather dramatic, losing to the likes of Agut and Cilic was totally unexpected.

Stan's in with a shout but as you say he's very inconsistent. Federer's 35 now too, I think his GS winning days are over.

Correct. But all of them can beat Murray on their day.

Murray into the semi-final. One more win and he's world number one.

Think Murray can achieve a career grand slam? With Djokovic looking like he's coming down slightly from his freakish levels (no doubt he will be stronger next year, but that air of invincibility has gone) Murray could grab the AO in Jan. He really deserves it having made 5 finals.

The difficulty one remains the FO. I know he made the final there this year but it really is his weakest surface. Would love him to grab all four slams, would be an achievement he deserves after keeping up and pressuring the other 3 over the years.

Hope he makes it to #1 tomorrow. Remember his debut at Wimbledon all those years ago and thinking, man that guy has the shots to become a fantastic player. Heart on sleeve type guy with character flaws but that makes me like him a bit more.

Deserved. Incredible year for him.

Will most likely win in Paris and should be a favorite in London, as well.

Murray No1! What an achievement.

And what an implosion by Novak... so weird.

I like Andy, most of these tennis blokes seem likable lads really. My beef is that Novak, my boy, doesn't have the kind of media coverage Andy naturally enjoys as a Brit. Murray is basically getting the same level of write ups that Novak did for holding all 4 slams at the same time, something only 2 other guys have actually done.

Weird thing to be annoyed by, as you say Murray is British so of course he will get more media coverage.

Surely Serbian newspapers cover Djokovic in great depth?

Acknowledged. Still find it annoying making dudes achievement seem much more than they are.

Read one lately? English being arguably the most widely spoken second language means Andy's write ups have far, far more visibility than Novak's.

Novak's a worldwide sports superstar (to a bigger extent than Murray) and receives plenty of attention and gets a number of write-ups.

There are big write ups in British papers, which is normal because Murray is British. Djokovic gets lots of worldwide coverage, too.

No doubt but if he were British, my word. And subsequently, imagine Andy was a Serb.

The British press gives Murray a lot more coverage than he's British, as they would with Djokovic if he were British. There's nothing even remotely strange about that.

My bad fellas, I expected you guys to read mind. My beef is that as a person who speaks English as a 2nd language, I come across a lot of Murray's write ups being that they are written in English and the British press have quite a far reach in the media I come across.

Great stuff Muzza.. so proud of him. Really needs to knuckle down next year and make sure he adds the remaining slams he needs to complete the set.. right now is the best chance he has to do that.
