Tennis 2016

Stan scraps the 4th 10-8 in the tiebreak. Never seen him so defensive but should win the 5th now though. Evans played a great match.

@Jazz
Kyle Edmund ;)
I give him now a 20% chance to beat Djokovic.

A shame about Evans......that was so so close :(
He must now keep that level in the future then all is still fine.

Murray has to improve his game for 2nd week of the tournament or he'll go out against Dimitrov (Last 16), Nishikori (Quarter-final) or Wawrinka (Semi-final).

Sevastova will be a tough opponent (She has beaten Muguruza in the 2nd Round) for Konta but if she's fit then she should beat her for a nice quarter-final against Keys or Wozniacki.

I must admit, I haven't even heard for Pouille untill he beat Del Potro in Wimbledon. I've never seen his name being mentioned along Zverev, Thiem or Kyrgios, but he seems to be another good young player.

Looks like Pouille's ran out of gas. Hopefully Murray and Nadal can find some form in the second week to make Djokovic work for this at least.

I wouldn't get carried away with Pouille yet.

That was basically a repeat of the Fognini match for Nadal. He's shown nothing yet that he could win a slam.

French and British taking over America........some great games happening here to be fair, the big boys fading has really re-opened up the sport for genuine fun throughout the tournament instead of waiting 2 weeks for the big four to essentially play each other.

PS This dude just looks like Harry Kanes brother.

Murray and Djokovic are still way too good. One of them will still win this one.

Last person to win a slam other than the big 4 was Cilic in 2014. Still hardly a regular occurrence.

He was up a break in the last set. No idea why Rafa can't close these matches out these days.

And he actually looked good this tournament, with the forehand especially working well.

Nadal is finished at the top, he needs a drastic change in mentality which is not going to happen. Pouille played ok but he doesn't beat Nole or Murray playing at that level, every time someone beats Rafa it seems like they played out of this world but the fact that it is happening every second week now shows that it's not really that hard to do.

This.

Laughable that Pouille is being touted as a future grand slam winner. The guy scraped through to play Nadal in his first two matches. Monfils will knock him out. When he beats Murray or Djokovic then I would start to take notice.

Otherwise he sits alongside Verdasco, Dustin Brown and Fognini as guys who Nadal made look very good.

As I said before, Nadal will do nothing at Wimbledon or Hard court unless he does something with his serve. You need to be able to get free points on those surfaces with your serve.

He has nothing in common with those guys. The above are all journeyman players.

Pouille is a relatively young guy who's had his best year in tennis culminating in an excellent result here. There's a natural progression here with his ranking climbing steadily as well.

Well we'd see.

Beating Nadal doesn't get you touted as a future grand slam champion anymore. Especially after Pouille could have easily been eliminated in the first two rounds. And Nadals recent record in grand slams has been abysmal.

Maybe it's me. But Del Potro was beating Nadal and Fed at their peak when he was just 20. That was impressive for a young player. Reaching a few quarter finals at 22 in tennis doesn't shout impressive to me.

Everyone is quick to look for a bright new star. One year it's Dimitrov. The next it's Nishikori. Then it's Thiem and Kyrgios. If you want to be the next star of tennis then you need to be consistent in majority of tournaments you play just like the great players.

Tbf all I said was that he can win a GS in the future. Some average players have won slams in the past so it isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

Del Potro is someone that could've been a great of the game. I never said Pouille would become that.

Speaking of Del Potro he's looking good here against Theim. Hope he stays fit. At 27 he can still have another 2-3 years at the top of the game. Beautiful player to watch. My favorite after Rafa.

Nadal has played decently well since the clay season but there really is no point to playing well if you can't close out matches. He did it in Rio, he did it in Australia, he did it again last night. 4-3 30-0 up and he threw it away. He had an easy forehand in the TB in the 5th and missed that too. It's not even the wrist imo and it doesn't even seem like a major mental problem because he's fought really hard this year to come back in matches but he's just totally lost the ability to close out matches. Either way, it's a shame that Nadal losing doesn't even make me too sad anymore. The sad truth is that you know even if he makes it to match vs Djoko or Murray it wouldn't be too pretty. Anyway, hopefully he picks up one slam somewhere.

A JMDP US Open win though would be

Murray looks really really good. Think he'll give Djokovic a very tough match.

He looked really good but I have a feeling he's going to be knocked out unexpectedly before the final. Think Nishikori or Del Potro might get him. Djokovic meanwhile is cruising to the final with one of the softest draws ever

Delpo or Stan maybe, but I'd be shocked if Nishikori beat him

Murray will win the whole thing, imo. he's the only one here without fitness or any other issues.

I couldn't watch Murray vs Dimitrov last night but i would really like to know if Murray was so good or Dimitrov was so awful

I agree.
So many retirements and injuries.
It was worse last year.

I don't want to jinx him again but Murray is currently in the best form in his career (38 wins out of the last 40 matches and has reached the final in the last 7 tournaments)......in my opinion only Djokovic could beat him over five sets.

Del Potro pushed him in the olympics. He fell short due to the effort he put in the semi finals against Nadal.

If Del Potro can make short work of Wawrinka then he has a very good chance against Murray.

All those five sets seem to have now caught up with Pouille. Monfils cruising. 2 sets up.

Wtf. He's going to win this by loafing around at the hotel.

Not only is his draw a piece of piss, they've all just retired to make it easier. Not a chance Monfils beats him. Also he seemed to have some physical issues but all this time off will mean he'll come primed in the final. This must be the luckiest grand slam win of all time.

He was already two sets up and cruising in the match when Tsonga retired.

I didn't see it but was Tsonga hampered by the injury in those sets? If he was then that is making it pretty easy for Djokovic still.

Unbelievable that he's had such an easy run. Whoever comes out of the other side won't have the energy to match him.

Seems as though Tsonga came into the match carrying the injury.
