Tennis 2016

So people on here seemed surprised to see Murray take the first set? Djoko is always a slow starter.

Also, Murray has lost this due the camera  Murray doesn't have the mental strength to be a great player. He loses it way too often and his head goes straight down. Plus he's a complete bellend.

Peak Nadal or peak Djokovic? I reckon Djokovic shades it.
Peak Djokovic beats peak Nadal, peak Nadal beats peak Federer, peak Federer beats peak Djokovic is how I see it.

Or Djokovic on slow hard, Nadal on clay, Fed on fast hard and grass.

Murray's got to be disappointed by how much his level dropped after the first set. Good performance from Novak though, would have been easy for his head to drop after losing the first set considering how much pressure he's under.

Federer could be back for the Stuttgart tournament this coming week.

He has travelled there. But won't make any decision unless he 100%.

Congrats Nole. Career grand slam and 4 slams in a row. Now only Olympic Games and the official grand slam missing :D

Novak getting it on with the ball girls.

Will somebody please step up and beat him. Otherwise tennis is getting stale.

Tennis was starting to get stale when Federer dominated and then Nadal came along in 2005.

Djokovic is just too good. With the field being a bit weak right now, I think Novak will get to 17 quite easily unless Thiem/Zyerev do a Nadal but that seems unlikely.

How long since someone held all four Grand Slam trophies at the sime time?

Rod Laver was the last one, very long time :D

And the only one (did it twice). Djokovic is the first to do it on 3 different courts (Laver did it only on grass and clay).

With Fed struggling with injury, Nadal likely to be out (and bloody useless anyway on grass), if Djoko can overcome tiredness and take Wimbledon, the calendar Slam is definitely happening.

Defo in discussion for GOAT.

Murray problem is that once he loses focus / gets frustrated, he just cant pull himself back into the game and it just spirals out of control. Whereas Novak seems to use that as fuel to go on.

What he say? As I switched over.

Saying what an amazing achievement is what Novak has done in last 12 months (all four GS's), then reminding the crowd how rare a thing it is, that last time it had happened a long time ago, and it will be a very long time before it happens again, then telling them to remember how lucky they've been to be there today and witness it. Also added that he is proud to be a part of it, however it may suck to lose a final...

Obviously gutted, very emotional and genuinely classy.

Yeah this shouting at your box constantly does not work.

This why Lendl worked for Murray as he would never do that in front of him.

He needs to hire back Lendl even just for Grandslams. It is better than nothing. He won Rome and got to French open final without a proper coach. Just needs Lendl to get over this Djokovic challenge.

Good to see the commentators, pundits etc finally saying what I've been saying for ages that Djokovic has been doing it in a tougher era and having to beat Nadal, Murray and Federer in finals(bar Tsonga) 11 out of 12 slams against three of the best of all time. Whilst Federer won 10 slams against Roddick x4, Safin, Phillippoussis, Hewitt, Baghdatis, Gonzalez and Soderling. Federer never held all four titles at the same time, whilst Djokovic has a positive H2H against the other top 4 guys. Not to mention his masters record. No doubt in my mind he's the GOAT.

My first post in this thread, and its only right I dedicate it to Novak Djokovic. He's definitely in the top 4 of all time. Murray just can't beat him since Wimbledon

Novak should really win the calendar Grandslam this year. There's no one out there that can beat him in a 5 set match when he's on form.

I can't comment on players from past eras but for amongst the players of the last 20 years I think it is between Novak and Nadal for the greatest stakes.

I think Novak maybe edging out ahead now though.

Agreed. The GOAT.

Olympic year as well. Could win it all.

I have a feeling that in around 10 years time people will still view Federer as the 'goat'

Federer came in at the right time, when the internet was growing and not as cynical.

Kinda like the benefit Zidane enjoys.

I think Federer was a better player than Nadal though.

Some thoughts:

Poor final. Of the big 4, these two match up the worst. We're going to see lot more of these games but don't think they'll produce many classics.

Gutted for Murray. To lose 8 GS final is heartbreaking but then it's easy to see why it's happened with his mental fragility. Never seen a player self-combust so easily - the drop in performance after the first set was a disgrace.

Djokovic tries too hard to please the crowd. Charisma is innate, not coached. Also there's a definite sense of only-singing-when-he's-winning with him (eg. applauding Murray's shots once the match was sealed).

The French Open crowd is genuinely the worst sporting audience in the world. Piss-poor attendance over the 14 days, only show up for the finals and then just to randomly boo players.

Is the Olympics 3 sets or 5? I think Djokovic is more vulnerable in a 3 set match than a 5 set match. Federer if he's fully fit for example will have a good shot at beating him in a 3 setter.

They really are truly terrible.

8 final losses for Murray now?

I think it's 3 sets up to the SF. Final is best of five.

Thats probably right. I dont really remember the 2012 final well other than Murray making light work of Federer whichhas probably skewed my memory

Best of 3 till SF (+ bronze medal match) and best of 5 in finals. Del Potro gave a tough game for 4+ hrs to Federer in semis with the 3rd and deciding set going 19-17. Murray beat Federer in straight sets in finals. Del Potro beat Djokovic in bronze match. Del Potro also gave a pretty tough game to Djokovic in 2013 Wimbledon semis with Djokovic finally coming through in 5 sets. Murray won the finals in straight sets again. When Del Potro is good, he's amazingly good!

It comes down to the way they play the game as well as success, Federer played the game in such an attacking way. It's the same in so many other sports, more success with robotic efficiency isn't seen with the same romanticism as lesser (but still big) success with grace/imagination.

I've always felt this about watching these two play, but don't possess a more nuanced knowledge of Tennis to truly explain why. Would you say it's down to their similarities style wise? Always seemed to me that Djokovic just plays Murray's game in a more aggressive and efficient manner. Mentally much tougher too of course. Even some of their 5 setters have bored me.
