Tennis 2015

How will it undermine his claim as GOAT? The fact is at nearly 35 he is better than everyone else bar Djokovic, 10 years ago he'd have buried him if presented with some of the chances he's had tonight. The only way his claim as GOAT is if someone overtakes his slam record.

Of course it does. Greatest ever player who couldn't beat his two closest rivals consistently? The question is does his grand slam record compensate for that - I think it does but it's understandable if others don't.

Funny. One of things djokovic got slammed for on redcafe years ago is that he is a bottler. Holding jis nerves is now his weapon.

Novak, fecking amazing! His foot speed is so good, some of Fed's shots could have been winners against someone like Wawrinka and this guy is at the end of everthing with time to spare.

Bit unfair on Federer. His H2H record with Nadal is clearly influenced by the surfaces they met on. Nadal spent a few years going out of slams early therefore Federer never had a chance to rack up the wins.

Certainly the past couple of years it has, but in many of the past few years it would have been Stan, Murray or Novak who would have knocked him out. Once Nadal started getting better of Roger, he was beating him most of the time on pretty much all surfaces.

You can apply head to head logic to many other sports and find some of the greatest having a poor records vs someone else. You have to take everything he has achieved the way he adapted to stay competitive, when his nearest challenger has run his body into the ground and I don't think will reach the heights again. His grand slam record is his feather and its a pretty big one in that hat of his.

Woke up randomly, so might as well keep an eye on the score for the rest of the set.

He is wasting so many opportunities against Djokovic as usual.

Djokovic will soon have more slams than Rafa, there is so little competition. As I said the other day the golden generation of ATP is being followed by one of the worst generations ever

I wish the crowd just kept quiet when Fed had the 2 break points at 15-40. The rhythm was thrown off. That being said, is there a more unflappable athlete in sports than Djokovic?

Went down to watch the final game. Congrats Novak, great champion. Roger too. Was the crowd cheering every Novak error throughout the match or just then. I get they wanted to see Federer win, but cheering Novak hitting a first serve out?!

I doubt he will catch Rafa. He will definitely catch Borg though.

Roger doing so well at 35 is amazing but he hasn't beaten Rafa in a slam final since Rafa was 21 and hasn't beaten Novak in a final since Novak was 20 .

So he was one match away to complete a calendar grand slam... amaIng year.

He's only 4 behind. Who do you see getting in his way over the next two years? I think he has a realistic shot at catching Federer.

He won 3 this year making all the 4 finals, unless he has injuries he is going to definitely catch Rafa

He is 4 behind Nadal - that's an eternity and he isn't likely to stay on top for long. New players emerge, old ones re-emerge. A couple of years ago, there were some who were sure Nadal would catch Federer and he has since crashed and burned. Djokovic is no spring chicken at 28 and will begin to fade soon.

The amazing thing is that this guy at one point had a horrific record in GS finals and going to 5 sets. Physically and mentally, he's now top of the game.

I think he could. Rafa looks mentally weak right now, not sure if he can turn it around and he has the beating of Roger and Murray. Don't think Stan is consistent enough. It all depends whether he can keep it up. After 2011, we all thought he would win a lot but he only ended up winning the Aus Open both times in 2012 and 2013.

In fairness, Nadal hasn't really held up his end of the bargain in recent years - ie. getting to the finals of Wimbledon or US Open (in the last two years, during which Federer has had a rebirth.)

I don't know. I just know you can't extrapolate past form with future results. For example in 2011 Djokovic won 3 of the 4 slams, then proceeded to take another 3 years to win 3 more. And that was when he was in peak form. So don't expect a repeat of this year next year.

This will hurt Roger so much , he played so well in the tournament and made so many mistakes in the final. The intensity of the final was great but quality wise I thought it was average

I actually think Nadal could win another French before he goes.

Just read Roger had 9 break points on second serves and lost them all.

Anyway, I need sleep.

Yep. Unlike football, 29-30 really is the age where tennis players start to fade. Actually, most are already going downhill at 28, apart from Djokovic and Wawrinka. Sampras, Federer, Nadal, they all started winning far less Grand Slams at 28. It's a very demansing sport.

True, but back then he was facing a Nadal who was still more or less in his peak, Murray going into his best form (which he doesn't look likely to recapture,) and, at least in 2012, a mini-renaissance from Federer at Wimbledon. I guess it'll be interesting to see if there are any up-and-comers who can challenge him, as I don't see Nadal, Federer or Murray presenting the kind of challenge that they did 3-4 years ago.

4 out of 19 breakpoints was it? Against Djokovic, Federer's never going to get a better chance.

Diplomatic interview from Djoko given the circumstances. Wouldn't have begrudged him if he told the crowd to go feck themselves.
