Music Taylor Swift

She may be a great songwriter (I definitely don't think so but I understand it's highly subjective and I don't feel qualified to judge her music), but she's not a good lyricist by any stretch of the imagination. That type of outrageously OTT praise is going to create some pushback, which is probably the intention anyway, so it's fine I guess.
Yeah by great songwriter, I meant great lyricist. Which she is.

Would love to read what some would consider her top three best songs for Lyrics, if someone could post them?

Edit: As in post the actual lyrics, cheers.

No, they're all very easily available in the public domain. It's also a very disingenuous way of trying to discredit something.

She's not Bob Dylan, but she's a great lyricist.
Interesting.

Thanks for the informative post.

I'm not arguing she is the "goat", nor do I think anyone else is in here, it seems like it's a bit of a strawman. I think there's a Grand Canyon between arguing she's the goat and saying she has no talent, has no memorable songs, will have no legacy, etc.

Her fame, her career, her body of work until now is being massively minimized.

Also, from a pure quantifiable perspective, a song everyone would agree is quite relevant in the 21st century, Seven Nation Army, has 1.5bn listens on Spotify. Swift's highest ranking song on there is Blank Space with 1.6bn - despite being released 11 years later, but with Spotify gaining popularity later than the White Stripes songs, I guess it kinda levels the playing field. She's massively relevant. Maybe not on here, maybe not with the overarching demographic of the Caf (and yes, that is genuinely a point to take into consideration), but the world is quite a bit bigger.

I am pretty sure few people said she is the GOAT. Not that I mind it that much anyway, I am not that much into pop music, but it would definitely be disappointment if she is top10 greatest pop stars ever - but I am aware that she could be looking how famous she is.

Regarding criticism, I haven't said anything of that, except her not being relevant, but to be fair, I meant that in a way that I don't see her being relevant in 10-20 years as some of the stars I mentioned in my initial post. She is simply not charismatic enough, and I don't think her music is quality enough, and I don't think those texts are so memorable to last that enough.

90% of the posts in this thread include samples of her lyrics.
Why's everyone going on the defensive, I was generally interested in what of hers would be considered as great as a music lover myself, haven't got time to go trawling this thread for them.

She must have some standouts, no?

There's literally a dude listing his favorite songs with the whole lyrics included all over the thread.

Can you not read? I simply asked for a top three, purely out of interest?

Are you all this sensitive? Jesus.

I just thought it might be a pretty good starting point for you? I don't get your reaction.

That slacker haven't even made it into the Top 70 yet. You won't get the good stuff that from until a few months from now.

I don't get everyone elses reaction tbh, someone compared her to Shakespeare which peaked my interest, so I asked what I thought was a fairly reasonable question which no one seems to want to answer for some reason.

Yeah, but I haven't made that comparison. So I don't really see why it would fall on me to give examples for it.

You quoted me dude, it was originally an open question to the thread.

My word.

I rate Exile, The Last Great American Dynasty and and The Great War as her best songs, and better than anything Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady Gaga or any of her other contemporaries have produced. Comparisons to Shakespeare are a bit much though  She's no Wu-Tang Clan...

I know. To point you at some of her lyrics as you appeared interested to get to know them. I'm sorry if I offended you by not doing it in the precise way you demanded. And otherwise I just didn't see why I would have to give you examples of lyrics resembling those of Shakespeare. I didn't make that comparison. I just thought it might be of help to point you in what is the easiest way for you to find lyrics of hers, someone considers to be good. I wasn't aware of the hurt and sorrow this would cause.

For what it's worth, she made it onto Rolling Stones' list of Top 100 Greatest Songwriters of all time at #97. This was in 2015, though, so she has surely improved on the list since then.

Are these Taylors lyrics?

"she's a fecking great songwriter mate"

"That's great mind letting us know a couple of her best lines"

"I don't know"

It's the story of this thread.

- "Can you give us some arguments why she is so good?"

- "Yes. You are all fecking middle aged men, and also white. Probably racists too."

Well I guess Samid wins this thread in the end, he made us all discuss Taylor Swift.

I just wrote a post about that just today.
I believe she is good because she appears to be authentic, her songs appear to be honest and are relatable, her general persona is a rather positive one and all this makes it a lot of fun to be a fan. I for one don't believe her lyrics are that brilliant. I just think they are honest. People connect with them. So do I. And while not brilliant, I think they are well written. And it is obviously pretty cool that she writes everything herself, deeply cares about the songs she writes, has a consistent and unique style and seems grounded. And she pretty much does her own thing. She doesn't really try to replicate any trends, but is creative herself. That is shown by her two folk albums, which I like most. And that really is not something popstars normally do.
All this appeals to her fans. If it doesn't appeal to you, that's fine. But the dismissive nature of some people in here is tiring. Especially since she is not only successful, but also enjoys quite some critical acclaim.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's a good, old-fashioned academic troll.
It's a beautiful piece of click bait for the die-hards, I would love to see how many times that has been reposted online since it was written.

And that's fair.

I am not criticising her btw, just her fans whho overrate her, I like most of her songs that I've heard, I just don't think she is that special.

Music for the masses, nothing wrong with that at all, we all need our place.
