Music Taylor Swift

Whether she's the GOAT or not is a bit irrelevent, but that she is a cultural phenomenon and that she will have a genuine legacy is pretty clear - arguing otherwise just highlights how disconnected from reality certain posters are, and reeks of "middle aged man energy" as @Dan_F put it.

Haha, no. Taylor Swift just amassed a large dedicated fanbase. She has very limited cultural relevancy in my opinion.

Her best lyrics by far:

For all my Southside ****** that know me best
I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex
Why? I made that b**** famous (Goddamn)
I made that b**** famous
For all the girls that got dick from Kanye West
If you see 'em in the streets give 'em Kanye's best
Why? They mad they ain't famous (Goddamn)
They mad they still nameless (Talk that talk, man)
Her man in the store tryna try his best
But he just can't seem to get Kanye fresh
But we still hood famous (Goddamn)
Yeah, we still hood famous

By the way, I think the reason she’s successful is that her songs seem quite honest, resonate with lots of people and her whole persona is quite positive and seems authentic. Which in itself is quite rare in the music business, especially the more successful parts. It’s just fun to be a fan of hers.
That’s about it, I think. No great myth there.

She’s the Grateful Dead for HR managers

I am not insulted by the way, I am fecking 32, but just find it lazy way of discussing things.
I think I raised other discussion points in my post, such as how the way people consume music now has changed how we view the popularity of artists. Happy to discuss that with you, but you chose to respond to the other part of the post.

Not like the Beatles or Michael Jackson of course. It's pretty much impossible for a single artist to have that kind of relevancy in the modern landscape.
Who has more cultural relevancy in your opinion amongst her peers?

#60 "ivy" (2020)

"How's one to know? I'd meet you where the spirit meets the bones, in a faith-forgotten land"

"In from the snow, your touch brought forth an incandescent glow, tarnished but so grand"

"I wish to know, the fatal flaw that makes you long to be magnificently cursed"

Yet another beautifully written song. You simply can't listen to this and claim she isn't an amazing lyricist and storyteller.

To be fair, most of the music I listen these days is the radio. In the 2000s it was mostly TV music, so not really sure if I am relevant to answer or discuss your initial post.

#59 "Ronan" (2012)

Why would so many Swifties run through a brick wall for Taylor? Partly because they are insane. But mostly because of stories like this one. Heartbreakingly heartwarming.

"The lyrics of this devastating charity single are based on a blog by Phoenix-resident Maya Thompson about her three-year-old son Ronan, who died from neuroblastoma in 2011. Swift wrote and produced the song by putting together quotes from the blog, crediting Maya Thompson as co-writer. All proceeds from sales of the single were donated for charity causes to raise awareness of and fight against cancer."

"The pair met in October 2011, when Swift invited Maya to her concert at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. She wrote about her reaction when Taylor told her that she'd penned the song inspired by her blog entries; addressing her late son, Thompson said that her calmness "...soon turned to complete and utter frozen shock when these words came out of her mouth: 'I wrote a song for Ronan.' The tears started pouring down my cheeks as soon as I heard her say those words. But her words didn't stop there. Not only did she write a song for you, but she wanted to know if it would be alright to perform it on the nationally televised Stand Up to Cancer show..."

"Swift re-recorded "Ronan", subtitled "(Taylor's Version)", for her second re-recorded album, Red (Taylor's Version), released in November 2021. Prior to the re-recording, Thompson confirmed she had granted Swift permission. A lyric video for the track was confirmed by Thompson. The video contains images and home video footage of Ronan with Thompson, provided to Swift by Thompson herself."

Originally, "Ronan" was not a part of any of Taylor's albums. Here's an excerpt from her letter to Thompson:

"I've recently completed the re-recording of my 4th album, Red. It's really exceeded my expectations in so many ways, and one of those ways is that I thought it would be appropriate to add "Ronan" to this album. Red was an album of heartbreak and healing, of rage and rawness, of tragedy and trauma, and of the loss of an imagined future alongside someone. I wrote "Ronan" while I was making Red and discovered your story as you so honestly and devastatingly told it. My genuine hope is that you'll agree with me that this song should be included on this album. As my co-writer and the rightful owner of this story in its entirety, your opinion and approval of this idea really matters to me, and I'll honor your wishes here."

Taylor first performed the song live for Stand Up to Cancer in September 2012, and has only performed it publicly one other time, when Maya Thompson attended the Glendale, Arizona stop of The 1989 World Tour in August 2015.

Now that boomer energy in this thread makes sense. We've got a few closet Trumpsters on here.

Kanye West is such a feckin dweeb.

I didn’t have much of an opinion on Taylor Swift.

But you have to be a heartless bastard to not be a little bit moved by this.

#58 "Karma" (2022)

Yesterday's song was a real downer emotionally so we need a mood booster. A somewhat humorous track where she proclaims how her 'good karma' brought her good things in life, as opposed to her detractors. Feels like she's directly addressing the caf granddads with this bridge:

Ask me what I learned from all those years
Ask me what I earned from all those tears
Ask me why so many fade, but I'm still here

There's also a remix featuring some rapper. The original version is way better but knock yourself out if you prefer this one.

She was getting an award at the time which seemed to annoy him so must have been pretty big then too
I think the issue was he didn't think she was better than Beyonce but that's subjective. I love her music and I think people who don't even like her find themselves singing along to her songs because they're so catchy. :D

#57 "I Did Something Bad" (2017)

They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one
They got their pitchforks and proof
Their receipts and reasons
They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one
So light me up (light me up), light me up (light me up)
Light me up, go ahead and light me up (light me up)

Taylor is taking no prisoners in this song as shots are fired at Kanye, Kim, her ex Calvin Harris and the media witch hunt.

“I’ve had several upheavals in my career. When I was 18, they were like, ‘She doesn’t really write those songs.’ So my third album I wrote by myself as a reaction to that. Then they decided I was a serial dater — a boy-crazy man-eater — when I was 22. And so I didn’t date anyone for, like, two years.

And then they decided in 2016 that absolutely everything about me was wrong. If I did something good, it was for the wrong reasons. If I did something brave, I didn’t do it correctly. If I stood up for myself, I was throwing a tantrum. And so I found myself in this endless mockery echo chamber.

And I couldn’t figure out how to learn from it. Because I wasn’t sure exactly what I did that was so wrong. That was really hard for me, because I cannot stand it when people can’t take criticism. So I try to self-examine, and even though that’s really hard and hurts a lot sometimes, I really try to understand where people are coming from when they don’t like me. And I completely get why people wouldn’t like me. Because, you know, I’ve had my insecurities say those things — and things 1,000 times worse."

The live version is fire!

I think One Direction were maybe the first band to have this whole cult-like online fandom thing? Although it’s a bit chicken and egg. Definitely possible that obsessive fans are nothing new and all that social media has done is exposed more people to their extreme opinions.

Did you see that insane article in the NYT where some gay lad tried to claim Taylor Swift as one of their own? Proper mental.

I read an article about the NYT article, the basic premise of which is that Swift can’t/won’t/daren’t officially announce she isn’t straight because the backlash/consequences would be ridiculous. There are multiple fan fictions about her being gay, to the point of mania. It’s speculated that if she finally says she isn’t then there’ll be serious issues with a lot of fans who believe otherwise. Judging by the erm….dedication (obsession) of her fans it’s not hard to believe. Absolutely nuts the lot of it. I get that she is seen as a positive role model but the mania around her is something else

People used to pass out at MJ concerts and the Beetles had cult obsessive fans, it’s nothing new and she’s undeniably had a lot of great pop songs, regardless of my own tastes in music.

Hating her is weird.

Just for the way Travis Kelce has played recently, I personally love her.

Nothing to do with hating her. I don't get anyone acting that way. Whether it's for the Beatles or her, or Joe the Taxidermist.

If Taylor Swift dated an association football player, how popular would football become?

Like imagine if she were Scott McTominay's girlfriend
