Sturridge vs Welbeck

Is it possible to have Welbeck, Rooney and Sturridge as forward three in 4-3-3 formation? England should try this in the future.

Nobody in their right mind would start Young over Rooney.

I am thinking with regard to the beginning of the Euros with Rooney out, this is what I'd go for though it is based on what happens to Terry in the spring as well.

Hart

Richards------- Terry-------- Ferdinand------ Cole

Jones______________Parker
Wilshere

Sturridge__________ Welbeck __________Young

It could work though a 4-3-1-2 with Rooney sitting slightly behind them might be tasty as well though we'd end up quite narrow.

I'd have both of them in, both as inverted wingers with Rooney central. On it's day the movement and pace of those two allied to Rooney's vision and intelligence could tear teams apart.
This would be my starting XI for the France game

---Young - Welbeck - Sturridge

--Wilshere - Jones - Cleverley

A.Cole - Terry - Ferdinand - Richards

-------------Hart

Get smalling in there and we are getting somewhere

Have to say, I really like Sturridge... think he's an excellent player. Certainly on the same level as Welbeck in my book, and it's only probably my bias that would make me pick Welbeck over him.

Shame we didn't snap him up after City let him go (which is just a crazy crazy decision look back on it)... having both of them would have been tremendous (and it would have annoyed City, which is always a bonus).

I would start them either side of Rooney come the Euros... what an attacking 3 that would be.

If anything I would say Bent has less of a chance if Harry's in charge... considering Redknapp compared his shooting to that of Sandra Redknapp, and Bent wasn't too impressed by it, or by his time at Spurs at all...

Don't really like the idea of Welbeck on the wings, even if Rooney would be dropping in allowing Sturridge and Welbeck to come in. Would prefer Chamberlain/Walcott and Sturridge with Welbeck in the middle, if it flourishes, Rooney stays on the bench, if it doesn't do that well, Rooney back in for Welbeck.

Or well they could just drop Lampard and Gerrard and go 4231.

---Welbeck----Sturridge---
----------Rooney------------
---Wilshere----Carrick------
----------Parker-------------
Cole--Cahill-Ferdinand--Richards

Very exposed formation unless you mean Welbeck - Rooney - Sturridge with Welbeck and Sturridge actually doing some defensive work. And why would you have Carrick in that position. Would be better if you switched Carrick and Parker.

Exposed, as in as exposed as Chelsea from 04-08 were? Pretty much the same formation.

Carrick still has defensive duties. Parker players as a defensive midfielder with Carrick and Wilshere playing in and around the center of the park 'better passing opportunities for Carrick' while still tracking back to help out in defense. It would also remove Englands gaping issue of not being able to hold on to the ball for more than 5 seconds.

Also, why player wingers when quite frankly, they've been the weakest part of the English line up since Becks got the boot. Neither Walcott or Downing are even remotely good enough to play on the wing for England, so why play them. Young is worth a shout but with Rooney sidelined for the first two games, he's probably better off being in the attacking midfield role.

You still get width at times from Sturridge and Welbeck, but thats not their strongest point and hasn't been Englands in a while.

If Wilshere gets fit he has to play. Probably ahead of Carrick sadly.

Been out for a long time now. Even if he got fit just in time for the euros, it wont be worth the risk imo. Needs to play games for arsenal 1st and prove he's ready..

---------Welbeck------

Young---Rooney----Sturridge

-----Carrick--Parker--

How many games is Rooney suspended for? Maybe Gerrard could play in Rooney's role while he's out.

Also, the lack of genuine wingers for England is disturbing, hopefully Young rediscovers some form. Otherwise, good front 6. I see Cleverley and Wilshere displacing Carrick and Parker eventually, but the 4 are a good set of midfielders to have for any tournament.

If Gerrard is fit he will start ahead of Carrick.

Aye, i dont see whoever the manager is not starting gerrard either, just the way i'd play it. A very attack minded front 4 with a solid base to fall back on in carrick and parker both of whom are good passers and contribute offensively as well..

3 maybe 2 games. Him in place of rooney till he's out, yeah.

If young and sturridge can be at close tho their best, that front 4 will be a handful for any defence. lots of pace and skill. very good technique too.

So a year on since this was last discussed, has to be said Sturridge has been very impressive for Liverpool so far whilst Welbeck's been a bit crap feeding on scraps this season

Always liked Sturridge no surprise for me today. Welbeck is a different player and as good and with the potential to be better. England are getting some quality frontmen coming through Sterling Ox Zaha even Carroll added to Wilshire Jones Smalling starting to take shape for the future wish they were all Scottish.

Sturridge was world class today. Never seen him play like that before.

I have seen him play like that before. I have slagged him off a lot but he looked great today. He is a better player than Torres, who is keeping that blue shirt warn on name and transfer fee alone.

Sturridge has improved now that he has the security of being first choice and played in his his correct position.

Welbeck is often being played out wide and isn't always a regular in the team BUT some of his performances have been fantastic, a couple of better finishes or more end product and people would be raving about him. If he continues to work hard and adds more end product (not a big ask for a young striker) then the skys the limit with him.

Wellbecks' played 27 games this season, hardly scraps. He's been very good, but just not scoring goals.

He's also playing out wide a lot and a fair few of those would be sub appearances. He hasn't scored enough though.

Still very early stages for Sturridge but he looks a player. £12m could eventually become very good value.

Welbeck reminded me a bit of Dirk Kuyt vs us. Constant running.

The last time they shared the same pitch, Welbeck was Man of the Match.

For half an hour.

In which Sturridge scored.

stunning performance by strurridge, a top class goal as well. this liverpool move seems to be the right move for him.
