Sturridge vs Welbeck

Another game, another goal for Sturridge.

His 17th goal in 19 appearances this season (14/16 in the league).

His 28th goal in 35 games since he signed for us 13 months ago.

I saw the game, wasn't particularly impressed with Liverpool or Sturridge, but you can't argue with the stats, he is doing well.. people are going to have off games..

Welbeck will be playing for a mid table club in a few years.

You can just compare who was worse for the weekend, and Welbeck wins just because he didn't score. Sturridge was pretty much your worst player apart from defenders.

Longevity means nothing. I suppose if it did than Young and Milner are better than Hazard and Bale.

Sturridge is better. Welbeck never showed Sturridge's form through those couple of seasons at Liverpool.

To be fair, Sturridge also had just one really great season, so I do not think your analogy makes sense.

Peak Sturridge was definitely better than peak Welbeck, but peak Sturridge existed for a very short time. I think both had relatively similar careers, and everyone would have disappointed for how their careers turned out 12 years ago when they were entering the scene. When it comes to goals Sturridge scored 120, Welbeck 113, so quite similar in that aspect.

Nonsense. Welbeck is the more versatile player and gives more to the manager. It’s why he’s still playing at PL and Europe level for a top 8 team whilst Sturridge is dancing like a prat on Sky Sports at the same age. Sturridge has only had one stand out season in which he was playing with Suarez who was fantastic that year.

Injuries ruined Sturridge, there really isn't an argument for Welbeck being a better player than him(obviously Danny has had injury issues too).

I think there is an argument for Welbeck being a better player. Was Sturridge more of a threat in front of goal? Yes, but Welbeck, in my opinion offered a lot more when they were both at their peak, and you see even now in the EPL, how much he offers to Brighton when he's fit, and why de Zerbi always opts for him when fit.

Welbeck always had everything to his game except goals. For a brief period in 2011 he looked like he was going to add that too.

Solely as a goalgetter, probably, but Welbeck’s alround game has always been up there with the best. it still is imo, he just adds quite a lot to a team with his overall play and runs.

Id probably pick Welbeck if I had to choose one of them.

Yeah would have been an unreal striker if he could score more/keep fit.

You'd think that's obvious but plenty strikers can score goals but are generally shit. Looking at you Lukaku.

He's nothing if not consistent. Scored 6 goals every season for Brighton so far and he's on 4 goals this season too so still on for 6!

Welback was always the better player but since staridge played for liverpool side that almost won the league if not for sleepy G everything about his reputation was destroyed as a player, you cant say hes not very talented when he scored in Barnebau

What on earth is happening here? Are you ok?

Had we kept welbeck you wonder whether he would have been a starter for mourinho as he had all the traits that mourinhio liked in a striker as seen with Abraham at roma when he was in charge.

Don't think so. Mourinho never takes chances with #9's, he always goes for guaranteed goal scorers.

Even the likes of Rashford and Martial, he said he never saw them as strikers but players that could contribute from the wing with 10-15 goals - Welbeck would probably be similar.

You get more understanding on his perspective here 3:30.

Sturridge was better. He wasn't just a poacher, I remember him being a good all-around striker and his record was far better than Welbeck's as a goalscorer.

Welbeck is good too but his goalscoring abilities have always been lacking, never got to 10 goals in a PL season.

Hard to say Sturridge was better because he had no longevity. But the idea that it was anything other than injuries that meant he's not around today is ludicrous. It wasn't a single season purple patch, Sturridge was a prolific goalscorer whenever he got a run of games until basically the last season at Liverpool, by which time he was clearly physically cooked. Look at his goals per minutes ratio in the half a season before 13/14 and the seasons after.

And it was a myth peddled on here at the time that Sturridge was some selfish poacher with nothing else to his game, he had genuinely great technique and was capable of bringing others into the game. And he was a big game player, scored tons of crucial goals even in the twilight years under Klopp.

Sturridge was ruined by injuries, not because he wasn't a top-class striker.

Good night out?

I just think you can find a Welbeck a lot easier than a Sturridge. I loved Welbeck but he wasn't really at that level.
