Steven Gerrard | Al-Ettifaq Manager

I want him to be good enough takeover liverpool but not able to bring them the glory.

Good move for Gerrard and Villa, a young hungry manager with an element of success behind him, will be interested in how Villa perform under him can see them doing well maybe European football next season..

For some reason I think he may develop into a very good manager. SPL is shite but he really did well with Rangers knocking Celtic of their perch and doing golden league title in just his 2nd year there. Did well in Europe too.

One thing I will say about Gerrard. He will use the full squad.

Villa have a good squad. He should try and match what Moyes is doing at WH.

Fair play - good move for him. Ambitious owners with some money to spend and expectations this season have now been revised back to mid table finish. Also a good way to prove his credentials outside of Scotland as a manager

If he'd had the same courage to move on so quickly as a player he would have won about 6 Premier League titles.

They play at Anfield exactly a month from now. He'll get some reception, that's for sure.

Happy to see him back in the Premier League. Can't say I've watched a Rangers game under his tenure, so interested in how he'll set up his team and how he will do there.

I always liked Villa so Im torn about this one. When do they play the Dippers?
Soon. At Anfield. El Slippico.
Houillier touched the This is Anfield board and blew kisses to the kop. Credit to Gerrard if he gives them the wankers sign.

Who do you think he’ll take with him Morales? Roofe? Maybe..
Not sure about those two. To be fair I wouldn't take Morales anywhere but prison. He might take a few of the younger guys. I really am not sure who he will bring in but he is versitile.

Yeah I hope he fails, but he seems to have the makings of a really good manager. If he does well you’d imagine him to be high on Liverpool’s list when Klopp leaves.

I hope they don't for their sake. It's never good to appoint club legends as managers.

Or if he slips while walking to the dugout

How was his season at Rangers going? Is it not awkward leaving them mid season, or is this once in a while chance to manage in the PL?

It's a reasonable move for him. Good insofar as it's a big club with a decent squad behind it and the potential for more investment. Risky because I'm not sure what success looks like for a club like Villa. Smith took them up from the bottom half of the Championship, reached a cup final, established them in the Premier League, finished mid-table, and was punted after a poor run of form. And now he's only going to be in contention for other relegation-battling or top Championship jobs. For Gerrard bobbing about in mid-table doesn't really enhance his CV - he would have to make inroads into the top 8 and fend off the challenge of some other well-resourced and more established PL clubs. Otherwise he ends up typecast in that endless group of mid-to-lower table managers in the league.

Ryan Kent maybe, I think Gerrard is a good manager and will surprise people with his football.

I hope he is moderately successful so Liverpool take him up as their next manager. As far as I'm concerned, ex-player to manager will always end in tears.

I just can't see him as some kind of modern tactical manager with modern coaching ideas. Strikes me as the same type of manager as Keane/Lampard/Ole - living of their reps as players and all about "Hardwork, passion and determination"

Hope his players have no trouble understanding his scouse accent. Fair amount of pressure on him. Villa will expect to not only stay up but push for European qualification in the next few seasons. Gerrard will also have to deal with every Tom, Dick and Harry viewing how he performs through the prism of whether he could manage Liverpool one day.

Where do Rangers go from here?

No bitterness amongst the Rangers support that he's left you so soon?

Loving to see him succeed there, Villa have decent squad to build on.

Although I do think he will do a decent job at Villa, he should have stayed at Rangers until the end of season, won his second title, brought back Champions League to the club then left a legend.

Now he’s just Rangers Brendan Rodgers ie a snake

Not great to be honest. Last year was obviously exceptionally good, but we didn't make the Champions League which was a big failure and we've been slow to get going despite being top of the table. We have a tough run of fixtures coming up with Celtic improving so the timing is pretty poor from his perspective. As much as most of us appreciate how far he's taken us, I think most fans will be a little let down by the timing of the move when he had a strong chance to win another title and get us back in the Champions League. Had he done that, I reckon most fans would have understood him moving onto a new challenge and wished him well. It's a little tainted right now, but provided we get the next appointmetn right and once the dust settles he'll be looked back fondly.

Interesting appointment.

Remember Ole on the verge of being Villa manager, but SAF (luckily for Villa) advised him to turn it down. Ole eventually took the Carlisle job….

Have a soft spot for Aston Villa but not anymore. I hope the prick gets them relegated not just to the Championship but plummeting down the divisions into obscurity. Then they recover with someone else in charge.

‘But, but, but he was already employed by another club…!?’

Glazers getting very worried that Utd fans finally realise that you can easily take managers from other clubs if your board wants them

No you can't, the manager needs to want to leave first, and then you pay his contract buyout clause - someone like ten Hag wouldn't want to leave Ajax midseason, due to respect already.

Yes, you can poach other's managers mid-season, but they need to want to leave themselves first.

Shold have taken Carlisle job, more his level. Was out of his depth even at Cardiff. And at the time he was already stagnating at Molde and stopped winning titles, so got his Cardiff job more because of the name/connections.

Anyway, interesting appointment. Make or break for him. Liverpool are not sentimental like us anymore and won't appoint him if he is not really successful with Villa.

Interesting. Good to see some more fresh managerial blood in the league.
