Sterling rejects new deal | Telegraph

Any player that would be willing to walk straight out of Anfield and into Old Trafford, or vice versa, could never be truly accepted.

If you are willing to move from Liverpool to United, or United to Liverpool, you can't really have any sense of feeling for either club. As a result all fans would know as soon as someone came along offering more cash that'd be that. Probably end up at City next.

Sterling's a good player, a very good player as it happens, but he's Liverpool.

In what world is getting paid £70k a week unacceptable? I would literally murder someone for that sort of money.

Anyway, I'd love us to sign him... if he wasn't just going to sit in a que with Rooney, Mata, Fallaini, Di Maria and Januzaj for the #10 position.

£70k a year would be fine. Feck, £70k a year would be incredible in fact.

If Liverpool fall well below what they thought they would achieve this season (ie Around top 5), then I can see him moving to City or perhaps Chelsea with some ludicrous offer. I don't see United going for him, nor do I see the likes of Real coming in.

He thinks he could get more, and rightly so. Don't get why he should be discriminated because of his age. That wouldn't be acceptable in any other line of work.

How long does he have left on his current deal?

*Insert joke about Raheem's kids*

Willian? Really?

The only way Willian is unique is that he's a £30m winger who's better at tracking back than he is at scoring goals.
:lol::lol:
You're right, but that's what Mourinho likes. And right now IMO he is better than Sterling who I personally don't rate that highly.
(I know that's a minority opinion, but right now I would rate Sterling as good as Townsend, and basically no top club would make a move for Townsend right now.)

What's his age got to do with it? He should be paid what's he's worth, hes top 3 in regards to influence/performances in that team, therefore he should be paid an equivalent wage.

How much do people think he's worth as a matter of interest? If Falcao is worth £265K a week? Glen Johnson £100K a week. Sterling must be worth £150K a week minimum to my mind. So he's right - what they're offering is an insult. What they're actually currently paying him (£30K) is outrageous.

Rejecting £70,000 a week as a kid is ridiculous in my opinion, regardless of his place in the squad, he's still the unfinished product.

I don't think it was the G14 that decided that (I don't think they even exist anymore although I might be wrong) as its not a decision they can make as its a player decision not a club decision.

I think there's an unwritten agreement between all agents though that they won't use it as it opens a whole can of worms where trust is concerned as it makes contracts of players 24 and over (again, I think) worth a lot less than they should be.
It's not up to them. It's up to to the player. But you're right. It's traditionally more of a bargaining chip. Release me on your terms or lose me anyway.

I think what Brophs meant was that clubs have an understanding that won't try and sign up a player who decides to use that rule.

Yeah I realise that now, apologies @Brophs that makes perfect sense.

Very true, but he could really get much more than that. And his agent probably knows that Liverpool are actually daft enough to pay him more than 100 K a week.

Either way they're in a sticky situation. Don't pay him ridiculous wages and you risk losing him, pay him ridiculous wages and you risk setting a dangerous precedent.

dippers would be crazy to let him go , as we would be not trying to get him if he becomes available. But i feel a suitable deal will be sorted that will keep him at Anfield.

Not a big precedent, considering that the likelihood of getting a young player as good as him (on the near future) is near zero. Sterling is the biggest English talent since Wayne Rooney, so paying him ridiculous wages wouldn't set any precedent. If you're good enough, you're old enough.

Poor this season. Going the direction of other young, pacy englishmen.

He would be crazy to stay at liverpool. that said chelsea are probably the safe bet if there was any truth in it. He'd be amazing here though.

It can still be used as an effective negotiation tactic for any player entering talks with Liverpool, "Well you pay that kid £100,000 a week, I want as much."

Is it really though ? Right now Sterling has all the bargaining chips, he is already their second best if not the best player after maybe Sturridge, that influence will keep on growing as Gerrard retires in the near future and Sterling develops, he is a massive commercial attraction for sponsors because of his youth star status and entertaining style of play, and to further consolidate his position, Liverpool are probably desperate to seal his signature in the wake of Suarez's departure and their relatively weak form of late.

Might sound ruthless, but sorry football players' lives are short, one injury could ruin their future prospects so in a business sense you have to be pragmatic. His agent should milk the maximum out of the deal in hopes of replicating Sturridge's, who is reportedly on £150,000-a-week after his latest renewal. £70,000 a week isn't really that much when one considers that it's pretty lame for Liverpool's rivals once we overlook the caveat of his age and focus more on his influence as a player. eg. Tom Cleverley was on £70,000 a week at United, Obi Mikel is on £75,000 a week at Chelsea and even at Liverpool, Sakho is earning £75,000 and Glen Johnson £90,000.

Sterling has probably earned the right to earn more than most of those players.

As an aside, I'm not sure it's purely down because of financial concerns. Maybe he's unsure of Liverpool's long term prospects as regular title challengers, and might want to try his hand at a club which might afford him the chance to contend for trophies. Wouldn't blame him if it were so. The likes of United, City, Chelsea could offer him more wages and better chances of silverware than Liverpool.

Pretty much...

In this case, you can't blame Sterling's agent for looking out for a better deal for his client.

Where did you get the Cleverley bit from? Nowhere did I read he was close to anything like that, the wages reported were around 30 k, Januzaj however is reportedly on around 60 k.

70 k for Sterlin is ridiculous, but he would indeed even get more from Liverpool if he delays it a bit, he'll probably get around 90/100 k

Its got to be over £100k, maybe around £120/£130k.

This. One look at Stephen Gerrard's sorry face tells you what happens when you hang around at B List clubs out of loyalty.

There's no chance we'll sign him unless we give him a ridiculous offer to comfort him from all the vitriolic abuse he'll get from the Scouse.

If he doesn't sign a new contract (which I think he will) then he'll be off to one of the two plastic PL clubs.

QUOTE]
It certainly is a sad state of affairs when a 21 year old who has been playing first team football for a couple of seasons is turning down 70k a week, however that's the way that the game is. In the context of players wages, its probably less than what he should be on.

The question isn't what he's worth, it's what he's worth to Liverpool. They know he is a very talented young man they can't afford to lose.

Sterling and his agent know that, especially in the position they are in currently so why not dip the rod in and fish for more. I know I would.

Besides, I've never accepted a companies first offer in my job, why should he?

He's easily worth £70k. One of the most talented youngsters on the planet and one of his team's best players. Why should he accept less than the going rate for talented English youngsters at the moment when he's probably the best of the lot?

Football agents are a bunch of c*nts basically.
They are as big as cnuts as the people on football clubs who negotiate the deals. Basicaly, no cnuts at all. They just want the best for their players, as businesmen on the clubs want the best for their clubs.

It can still be used as an effective negotiation tactic for any player entering talks with Liverpool, "Well you pay that kid £100,000 a week, I want as much."
'Sorry, but you're not as good as him'. Why doesn't Lindeegard ask as much as Wayne Rooney? Or why didn't Blind asked as much as Di Maria?

It is irrelevant how much a player is played, if you're not near as good as him.

Those £35,000 a week figures are his basic wages, excluding size-able add-ons, loyalty bonuses, participation in title winning seasons/ European qualification, appearance bonuses etc (as is customary for most bigger clubs). AFAIK his demands from Villa (£60,000) were similar to what he was earning at United.
