Stefan de Vrij

Who knows, were we ever really after Garay? Cavanni? Gaitan?

I'm sure LvG will bring in the best CB he can get a hold of, but they're not in great supply these days.

Dortmund isn't going to sell Hummels when they're already losing Lewandowski.

So who are the CBs people think we can get that are clearly better than Vermaelen?

Sules
Eder Balanta
Ginter(Doesnt want a transfer I think)
marquinhos(think he is unhappy)
Iningo martinez.

People would prefer de vrij but what nobody realises is the fact vermaelen was ten times more impressive in holland than de vrij ever was.

But Vermaelen is ALWAYS injured, and that's the issue. You can make any impact sitting on the sidelines, i think that's what most are worried about.

I certainly hope we're looking at them if they're available.

I have no idea how anyone could keep any kind of decent track of all the young footballers out there.

He's got a lot of hype him but I've never seen him play. How good is he really?

He's great, think if he leaves it'll be to Barca though they've been following him for a while. Too early for him to leave yet though I'd say, needs at least another season or so in Argentina. Picks up yellow cards like they're going out of fashion though.

Thought Ginter wanted a move but Frieburg were holding out for a better fee from Dortmund?

Really good imo. There is a chance that he can be the next dede but the signs look good and if he does get a transfer, will surely make his mark.

 I only follow a few of them due to an online game I play.

I read that he wants to stay in germany so put he doesnt want a transfer as for us(united) its the same thing.

I doubt LvG will do but playing 3 at the back could be a reason to go for both, de Vrij and the left footed Vermalen.

.................DDG
....SMALLING EVANS DEVRIJ
RAFAEL VIDAL HERRERA SHAW
................MATA
..........RVP.........ROONEY

Stefan the Fridge looks the best of the dutch defenders if LVG likes him and he isn't made of glass why not. He is young and looks as good as anything we have at the moment.

Been more impressed by Martins Indi myself but I'd trust LvG's judgement if he brought de Vrij in.

De Vrij looks a far more cultured defender than Indi for me who can often be brash and over-zealous in the challenge. I don't think either of them are all that mind you.

I didn't see anything in M. Indi but de Vrij impressed me with his passing and positioning. Couldn't judge his tackling and aerial ability so far.

We have to leave it up to LvG. I only watched him at this WC. Don't know if anybody here does watch the Eredivisie?

Only seen him at the World Cup but he looks pretty decent so far, I think there is a good chance we might sign him and vermalen, signing just vermalen wouldn't make sense because he is so injury prone but maybe LVG sees him as worth taking a risk on as a 5th centre half to add some experience.

I think you may have a point here.

It may well be that LvG thinks Jones Evans Smalling are more than capable to be at the heart of the defence and only need subtle additions to the back line.

Think if Hummels is a no for this season, then one of this guy, or Vermaelen would be adequate to play alongside Jones, really not sure about Smalling just now, and Evans is always injured, good chance we'd get them both for under £20 million so leaves plenty left for key DM position.

All our defenders are always injured, apart from Evra. Plus, Shaw seems to get injured a lot.

Doubt we're going three at the back but it would solve the Mata/RvP/Rooney conundrum quite nicely, wouldn't it? Plus a midfield of Herrera/Vidal would probably work better in that formation too. Giving Valencia a new contract would make a lot of sense as well as he could probably slot in quite nicely as a wing back.

I hope we don't sign this guy this summer. I would be surprise if we do. This guy is just a young player. Nothing different with Smalling, Jones and Keane. We should give them chance. We should either stick with our current centre back or sign a top experience centre back so the young ones can learn from him.

Lazio transfer target Stefan De Vrij “has no agreement with Manchester United,” assured the Dutch international’s agent.

English media claim Feyenoord centre-back De Vrij has already chosen his next destination and it will be Manchester United.

They maintain a deal has been struck for around £7m plus add-ons (around €8m).

“We have no agreement with Manchester United, nor have we signed for them,” his agent told Lazionews24.com.

“I don’t know where this rumour came from. Stefan is concentrated only on the World Cup and he wants to continue doing well.

“Links to Lazio? No comment.”

Doesn't mean all that much really, but the agent, if that's really his agent, has commented.

He is growing on me more each game i watch.

Tough to tell this WC but he is still young and for a ball playing defender seems to be showing decent attributes.

Doesn't look anything special to me, decent enough but not United quality.

I don't know if you were watching Dutch TV or English TV, but on the Dutch TV you could see and hear LvG screaming at him for misplaced passes. He has a tendency to be casual which will be punished in the PL

Story of the entire Dutch squad really, bar Robben who we aren't going to sign.

Apart from a certain centre forward i think you're probably right. Haven't seen enough of Depay though.

He strikes me as a bit lightweight during this competition, although he does read play very well and often makes timely interceptions and tackles. Agree with FromTheBench though, he's been more and more impressionable as the tournament has progressed. Certainly looks a far better prospect than Indi, so a least we are in for the right one.

SAF screamed at Evans and even Rio plenty of times.

Haven't seen him regularly but thought he was good today. Was attempting long balls MANY times so some might have gone awry playing as the sweeper almost.

Stats back me up on this it seems as He had 5 interceptions, 5 tackles won out of 6 and 13 clearances and most touches of any player except Sneijder. Also made a crucial last man tackle which i remember.

I agree he didn't look particularly fantastic, but did the bulk of the defending for the Dutch again. 5 tackles, 5 interceptions, 13 clearances. In terms of workrate and defending he's probably best of an ordinary bunch. We're only being linked with any of them because of their nationality, if they were top quality CBs Van Gaal would only need 2 on the pitch

He is still pretty young though, so may not be top quality right now. Anyway, I think he is going with 5 at the back because they lack fullbacks more than due to the centre backs and he also doesn't want Robben playing wide tracking back as he said.

Their next best wide option is also Depay who is Raw right now.

His passing was not as good as in the games before. All in all he looks like a solid defender. Don't know how much potential he has, at 22 he should get better.

At £7m he is almost no risk and to have one defender not injury prone in our squad could be a worthy addition.

Surely he's better then some injury prone defender picked from Arsenal's thrash bin

Exactly! I fear CB could be a position where we fail to add quality from the very top because there are only few right now and then not available.

As much as we all want Hummels, we need alternatives and if we don't get someone of that quality we must buy anyway because we lost 2 defenders and have only Keane to promote.

It shouldn't be Vermaelen and de Vrij looks good to bridge the time till next summer where chances could be better to get top players.

If de Vrij can't develop into a PL defender we had at least a cheap squad player to cover for our injury prone defenders which is something we will need for sure given their injury record.
