Television Star Trek

Its funny that most trek shows hit their stride going into the 3rd season, but Disco somehow managed to get worse and worse. "The chase" was a great TNG episode that should never have been a one and done. And here they had the chance to really let loose with some really awesome science fiction writing. And instead its like they wrote nonsense about feelings, the power of friendship over command structure and discipline, and then front loaded it with dime store marvel humour and cringe "lets fly" inserts where they werent welcome.

The final episode was so bad, not even Riker and Troy appearing could have saved it...

The casting choices were so bad that no writing could’ve saved it imo.

I still can't believe I gave up so easy on what was my favorite franchise. I'm not even interested in what happened in the final episode, all because of the main character.

if Discovery lasted past this season, she would have met Q probably and held talks in fluidic space with Species 8472 about them entering Federation. how the hell did they even allow such caricature to be the lead character?

let's fly, seriously? such a poor and weak line.

Only watched the first episode of this season, then checked out.

Did it get any better at all?

The fact they ended disco with a last mission cliffhanger ending , just in case there might be a clamber for it to be brought back, says it all about the show really.

I didn’t mind the finale but the entire season was basically a scavenger hunt and could have been done much better

Discovery? Hell no. Season 2 wasnt terrible due to Pike.being involved. But Discovery is an awful show.

This season I'm talking about. Season 5 is it?

How the feck did this get 5 seasons.

Not really, no. It was fine as far as Disco goes but given they spent the previous 4 seasons making Michael infallible it went basically as you would expect.

There is absolutely no jeopardy in any of the action sequences for her because you know she’s protected by plot armour

Anyone watching Prodigy?

I was put off at the start but went back to it a while ago, now just finished season 2 episode 16 and this is a lot of fun.

watching season 5 if Discovery now, while it is not fantastic , I am not hating it.
I do get the impression is a season long sequel to TNG episode The Chase, continuing the story of the enigmatic Progenitors.

What i always got annoyed about in Star Trek was they'd just sometimes explain stuff with a new concept they'd never hinted at before.

The whole changing shape/body/whatever is a quick get out. I did enjoy S1 but stopped after that. Not a massive trek fan anyway but it's enjoyable in a way. Liked The Orville.

Yeah I see your point, I am a huge trek fan, but never watched The Orvelle

Easily the worst Star Trek show. I gave up on Enterprise but I gave up on this way sooner. Like recent Doctor Who it was pitched to a GenZ audience that exists only in the caricature ridden imagination of white middle aged studio execs.

agree with you
I have season 2 of Strange New Worlds to watch after this, season 1 I thought was excellent.

I liked latter two seasons of Enterprise. The show still had a classic Star Trek vibe to it with a few good characters. Once Rick Berman and Brannon Barga lost control of the Star Trek brand, things began to go south imo. Although one or two of the subsequent movies were pretty decent, the TV side of things fell of a cliff.

I liked Enterprise , there was quite a few of the crew I really enjoyed watching, the stories were decent enough.
I wanted the crew to get out of the scrapes they got in and I did with the crew of the original series, TNG , DS9 and Voyager.
Discovery is different, none of the crew really make a mark on you, well they did not with me.

Paramount Global has just been sold, so there are likely to be some changes in store on the future of Star Trek. It will be interesting to see which direction it goes in.

if you like the tng/ds9/voy era, you'll probably like the orville. at least the first two seasons. ignore the cringe humour, it's written with some obvious love for the originals. the drawback is that i thought they were actually too faithful to those. a lot of orville plots and characters felt like recycles parts of existing trek stories.

Enterprise had lost me by then. Orville is enjoyable but a bit too much like TNG to be worth investing in.

I thought Picard Season 3 and Strange New Worlds were a major return to form for the franchise though.

I gave up after the first two episodes.

Tripe.

Just finished watching all eps of the Original series, I had seen them all before some many years ago.
Some of the eps have not aged well , but some are still excellent and get 10/10, City on the Edge of Forever with Joan Collins is I think the best of the lot, Space seed , first appearance of Kahn , The Trouble with Tribbles, The Enemy Within, first time we saw the evil Kirk and Mirror Mirror with the alternate evil time line.
There is a hell of a lot of filler episodes which are watchable but have not aged well, the worst eps of the whole 3 season was the last one, it was dreadful.
I have to mention the pilot ep, The Cage with Captain Pike, OK the acting and set are not very good, its not a shock they made changes, but it leads on to 2 I thought very good eps, where Spock took Pike bact to the planet to live out a ormal life after an accident left him wheelchair bound and mute.

Totally agree with you, The Inner Light is my fav TNG episode, it has everything you want from a Trek Episode.
I would also add,
Darmok S5
Measure of a Man S2 very close to beating The inner Light for best ep.
Chain of Command S6
First Duty S5
Frame of Mind S6
Relics S6 with Scotty.
I also like the eps with the Traveller
I also like Q enjoy all the eps with him in.
2 of my fav eps are also from S5 Times Arrow , about finding Data's head in a cave also has Mark Twain in.
Looking at yours and my list, S5 is the pick of the seasons, it had quite a few quality eps.

TNG is quality Trek or any TV really. Always a go to every or other year for me. Will recheck the top listing.

I find it hard going through TNG, so many filler episodes. But when it's good, it's fantastic. Some of the filler episodes are hilarious. A certain ghost springs to mind.

Ok! Top 5 TNG episodes bore fest incoming inspired by the above chat:

Schisms - Star Trek doesn't do horror enough and, despite aliens that look like cockroaches surprised at their recent conversion to being space monks, this is the best example in TNG. No Wesley Crusher.

The Best of Both Worlds - Picard's a borg! Even Wesley Crusher can't ruin this one. He does try to of course.

Chain of Command - "There are four lights!" No Wesley Crusher.

Cause and Effect - "There is the theory of the Mobius, a rift in the fabric of space where time becomes a loop." Spacial anomalies yet again but the best anomalageddon episode. No Wesley Crusher.

Time's Arrow - Jack London, Sam Clemens, monsters with mouths in their foreheads eating 49ers, the worst am-dram production of 'A Midsummer's Night's Dream' ever, an even worse Irish accent, decapitated Data, Whoopi Goldberg in full hijab with built in dinner plate, the entire command crew on a ludicrously dangerous away mission for no good reason and time travel shenanigans. Top drawer schlock. Oh, and no Wesley Crusher

Agreed on Darmok. I would add that to my list as well. Ditto with the Traveler, which I often get mixed up with "Where no one has gone before".

The Traveler was only in 2 other eps, Remember Me and Journeys End but I though each one was very good, Wesley gets a hard time , but in these 3 eps, I thought he was very decent.

I first watched TNG in the 90s, when I was a teenager. For some reason, I skipped that episode.

A few years ago I decided to watch TNG again. I haven't heard the fanfare about The Inner Light and when I started watching it I assumed it would be just another TNG episode. But as it progressed I felt I was watching something much bigger and unique. Only later I found out that this episode has been considered special for decades before I got to it.

It also won a Hugo award and was nominated for an Emmy.

the flute from that episode was auctioned off for something like 200 k not too long ago

I watched it for the first time recently and read the wiki page right after

I find that most drama's with multiple season, there is always that one ep, that stands out more than others.
The Inner Light is that ep, agreed it starts off like every other TNG episode, but I found pretty quickly that was was a cut above the normal, its is the ep I have watched more than any other, even thought I think Measure of a Man is very close behind it, The Inner Light has the extra that makes it 10/10.

This is my next watch after Inner Light, it would easy be in my Top 5 episodes.
